OT: Crests

I’ve always had a thing for crests so this tweet caught my eye. I’ve always liked a star above a crest because that displays your history and Championship pedigree. I think that’s something American sports can steal from soccer. I wouldn’t mind seeing 6 stars above a Steeler logo or 5 stars above the penguin crest. But those are are only domestic championships. Some of the Euro club teams have stars above their crests signifying Champions League titles but don’t do it for domestic titles.

Anyways out of these, I like Hollands the best and they have no stars and no world championships.

I also like the 3 Lions. Not sure why they don’t include one star in their crest. Maybe they are embarrassed that it’s their sport and they only have 1 world championship. Lol

College football award predictions: Who will -- and should -- win?

Outland Trophy (most outstanding interior lineman)

Finalists: Calijah Kancey, Pittsburgh; Olusegun Oluwatimi, Michigan; Peter Skoronski, Northwestern

Who should win: Kancey. The ACC's defensive player of the year was an absolute monster on the interior of Pitt's defensive line in 2022. Kancey racked up seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss while adding 10 QB hurries on the season. He was the second-best Power 5 interior lineman, according to Pro Football Focus, after Georgia's Jalen Carter, who missed multiple games. While it's impossible to directly compare Kancey's performance with two offensive linemen, his work was awfully reminiscent of another Pitt great -- Aaron Donald. And if a player is drawing those comparisons, it's easy enough to see why he might win the Outland Trophy, just as Donald did in 2013.

Who will win: Kancey

High School NIL

The PIAA yesterday approved high school athletes in PA to receive NIL money. Rodney Gallagher was the first to sign a deal, about 2 hours after the announcement. I think we will see blue chip athletes across the state getting paid regularly now. (what kind of $$ could the next Terrelle Pryor/Lavar Arrington type get??)

But what I'm really wondering is how long until the private schools with rich donors start buying up HS kids like they are USC?

Game Preparation.....Vandy vs Pitt

Of course I wasn't at
practice for either us
or Vandy. I can guess
though to some degree
what Vandy's game
plan involved.

First of all limit Burton's
ball control and one on
one penetration. Make
him give it up and let
some other Pitt player
beat them.They most
likely put their best D
player on him, They
pretty much succeeded,
but left Elliot wide open.

Secondly, beat the hedge
and get open looks
inside off it. They did
this pretty well. They
scouted us and I'm
sure knew Hugley,
could easily be beat.

Go inside all night with
their height advantage
and expose Hugley. They
more than succeeded.
Rebounds? 18 on the
offensive boards was
one sided. Blocks? 12
These stats are very
telling of what went on.

Gotta believe they worked
on loose ball drills. Gotta
believe they worked on
out hustling us. They
REALLY succeeded with
both. TO's? 15. Four of em
on Burton. They worked
on him successfully,

There's obviously more.
I'm not criticizing ORTG's,
but these stats reveal
what went on to a large
degree. These are some
of what coaches really
look at. I did not hear or
read Capel's post game
comments. These are mine.

The Morning Pitt: 12/8/2022 - What happened in Nashville?

Pitt's five-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday night when the Panthers lost at Vanderbilt 75-74. What happened in that game? And what does it mean for Pitt going forward? We're looking at all angles on today's Morning Pitt.

Good Rivals 13-9

Watching the 3 episode documentary on Amazon Prime called "Good Rivals" on US and Mexico as soccer Rivals over the past 50 years.

It's really good.

When USA knocked Mexico out of qualifying for the World Cup 2-0, it totally devastated the entire country. They showed all the dignitaries like the President of Mexico, just staring into the abyss.

And the next game in a match in the US, our fans chanted in unison "DOS A CERO! DOS A CERO!" (2 to zero).

The next game in Mexico their fans were throwing crap on the field at our players. Like a bunch of Hoopie trash.

Then it hit me.

Man, did we miss a great chance on national TV vs WVU to have the whole stadium chant in unison "13-9! 13-9! 13-9!" to offset their Shit on Pitt chants.

We need to do that next time in 2024.

Some observations about last night

Could (maybe should) have been a 3rd straight P6 road win for Pitt. This one and VCU were tough L’s.

Some pertinent stats
Points in the paint: Vandy 30; Pitt 12
2nd chance points: Vandy 15; Pitt 9
Points off TO’s: Vandy 15; Pitt 9
Bench points: Vandy 30; Pitt 4

So just 4 bench points for the game By Pitt. All by Fede. He played well. But a key play occurred late when FF got fouled after a great bounce pass feed from Nelly. FF had a point blank attempt underneath. But he was unable to convert the FG through contact, then made just 1 of 2 FT’s. If that layup goes in, who knows?

Hinson missing both ends of a 2 shot foul in the 2H during Vandy’s run.

Thought Burton was clearly fouled on more than one attempt driving to the goal with no call. The contact to his body resulted in missed FG attempts on those occasions. The alleged double foul where Jamarius had his arm grabbed and he was pulled down was also extremely dubious.

Elliott shot the 3 so well that when he missed, it was a surprise. Really hope he keeps stroking it like that. Greg & Nelly combined to go 9-15 from 3. Impressive.

Nelly had probably his best offensive game. 18 points. 5 assists. Another very clever reverse layup off of a baseline drive. 6-9 FG shooting (3-6 from 3). 3-3 FT’s Just unfortunate that jumper he hit with 9.7 seconds left didn’t result in the last 2 points of the game.

Finally, on Hugley. 0 rebounds. 8 points. 2 assists and 3 TO’s in 23 minutes. Not very positive or productive. Looked sluggish on the D end and at times seemed like he had a lead weight strapped to him he had so little lift and elevation when trying to jump. Imagine that HC JC is trying to play the long game with JH: to get him in shape and accustomed to game speed and intensity in the OOC part of the schedule. But have to wonder if the HC may be 2nd guessing himself some about the usage of JH vs FF last night? Or even JD-G for a bit?

Lighter load of games over the next couple of weeks with finals taking place. They really need John to get a lot of treatment on the knee and as much conditioning work in as possible. If he is unable to respond favorably, then it would appear that HCJC has to seriously reconsider playing time usage of guys at the 5, would have to believe.

Good Comeback, but Overall.....Sloppy

It should never have
come down to that last
play. We shot pretty
well, 48% Fg's and 48%
threes. However we
were killed on the
boards, giving up 18
on the offensive glass.
TO's were also bad 15.
What isn't measured
is how many loose
balls they got. IMO
they out hustled us
for almost all loose
balls. Sloppy play by
us for much of this
game. Vandy is not
a good ACC team.

Hugley with 0, yes O
rebounds. How is that
even possible? He killed
us all night. WE have a
few cupcakes coming
up. We need to get back
to where we were the
last two games. Let's
see if Capel keeps us
out of the usual tail
spin.
