Real sports are being played today and I just went to the espn app to check for results and game times for the first time in 3.5 months.

Man, it felt weird! I couldn’t even find the app on my home screen on my phone. It’s been so long!! What a good feeling though. I might have to venture over to the betting app now as well.

play ball!!!

Premier League is back today and all 22 players took a knee before the game. Cool stuff. And wearing a patch in their left shoulder.

If Jim Brown attends an NFL game this year and holds true to his word and doesn't kneel what will be the reaction?

Does he hate his race?

Do Black Lives not Matter?

Why doesn't he care about race relations?

Jim Brown barely gets around these days; taking a knee for him is impractical, all joking aside.

That said, if Jim Brown goes to a game and does not knee, no one will care.

Jim Brown is free to stand, kneel, squat, do handstands, or assume any other position he is physically capable of. Free speech. Jim Brown has a complicated history. He deserves kudos as one of the first black athletes to promote economic investment in the black community, and for more present-day efforts to combat gang violence. He also has an abhorrent record as as an abuser of women.

You often have such "nice" posts.
I am an old man who only played HS fb &bb...i would never "take a knee". It all started as an anti U. S. gesture.

These guys making handles fo hurl insults is cowardly. But yeah, I’m awful for calling out someone for adding a homophobic slur.

There’s nothing anti-US about taking a knee in protest. I’m a veteran — and I guess playing HS football/basketball is a credential here so I did that too — and I know it’s not a slant at the country. In case you hadn’t heard, the country was founded on challenging authority and the ability to do so without persecution is at the core of what you call freedom.

The same can be said by so many celebrities and athletes.

Kobe Bryant - rape charge
Michael Jordan - gambling
Tupac Shakur - kidnapping a minor

They all took a knee in solidarity and oddly it was after the whistle to start the game. That’s the way it should be. Their message is being heard around the world and it’s not being drown out because of the way the protest was administered.

The left networks won't cover it because it goes against their agenda. Because here you have a prominent civil rights leader who has done more for the cause than 90% of the celebrities and athletes. Interestingly enough, Shannon and skip refused to acknowledge brown but assisted Brees when brown was the more compelling story. The right networks will love it. So I do think people will care.

I think the left media will not cover it because the real story is what the black players on the field are doing. I think the right media may give it some lip service but that the real coverage on that end will be about the players kneeling and how that is some sort of disrespect to America.

I have a lot of respect for Jim Brown as it pertains to his willingness at any time to go his own way. And, he has been someone active in civil rights since the 1960s. But, I also think that his time has mostly passed as being someone that gets a lot of publicity for being an authority on the matter. And, Jim has never been one for many words though sometimes he will have longer discussions.

At the end of the day, kneeling on the field really represents two issues: the treatment of black people in America and the ability to protest in America. The former issue is something that has been a long running issue of mass complication in America; the latter has been much acceptable generally through America's history.

Brown himself has said that he would not kneel but that he has respect for players that make the decision to do so. I just do not see him standing out in this particular situation as someone that will be a beacon for the right.

Taking a knee is in protest of the US! Taking a stand on racial injustice has so many opportunities ( unfortunatley ) to use your platform!

Courage and knowledge seperate the two!

Keep everyone inside until after the anthem then come out take a knee. Nobody will be offended and the social injustice protests can be made.

Well said. I flew combat missions against the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and every other Middle Eastern terrorist group and/or criminal organization for 4 years and I don't care about kneeling at all. IMO, it's not disrespectful and it's completely consistent with our country's proud heritage of independent thought, free speech, and desire for equal treatment under the law for all races and classes of people.

It's baffling to me that people think we need to clamp down on one type of speech now to prevent other types of speech from being trampled in the future.

Perhaps sporting events should follow the example of our American ancestors and just make up different flags of protest and fly those instead..Our respected forefathers flew flags of revolution.. Green Mountain Boys.. Don't Tread on Me... and they're the very definition of true Patriots..

I was looking for 'cred' when I talked about my HS sports...just trying to give some context.
By the way, I'm also a vet (Nam).

We disagree.. so be it. I only mentioned my HS sports to provide a little context

I was just giving examples of celebrities who are worshipped but have character flaws.

Gambling isn't a character flaw when the person doing the gambling has the money to do so. Michael Jordan wasn't going broke playing cards at a casino or betting with his golfing buddies on their game that day. It was nothing more than a form of entertainment that he could easily afford, no different that someone else paying for tickets to a sporting event or a movie or a concert to get a couple hours of entertainment.

Stop playing the anthem before sporting events and then you don't have to worry about what people do during it. The players in the EPL game yesterday didn't take a knee during the national anthem because in England, and most of the rest of the world, they don't routinely play the national anthem before a sporting event. They will if it's an international event, for instance at a soccer match between the national teams of England and France they will play both anthems. But at regular league matches they simply don't do it.

interesting. You had me wondering if Rapinoe kneeled during both anthems or just our anthem. Considering bigotry and racism exist everywhere, and black lives matter everywhere, I would hope she knelt during both anthems. Doesn’t make it right in my eyes but for the sake of consistency and accuracy...

I think if the players chose to do that, it would be there call. The substance matters more than the timing.

I like the Ben and Jerrys systematic racism site.. some info listed..

Whites have 90% of all wealth...

Black unemployment 2x higher than whites...

Black children 18x more likely to be sentenced as adult than white children..

Black students 3x more likely than white students to be suspended for same infractions.

Blacks have higher arrest rates.. harsher sentences than whites for similar crimes.

Redlining still exists and blacks are shown fewer homes than whites..

Black drivers 30% more likely to be pulled over than white drivers..

More blacks harassed by police.. killed.

Healthcare bias...

Employment bias...

On and on and on...

Hey, if it makes you feel better to say this isn't a "racist country", then can you at least agree that this country suffers from "systematic racism" ?
