Bill Belichick to UNC

This is not good for Pitt. Unc is going to get crazy recruiting classes like the Colorado Deion bump times five. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is a school commitment to get the program into the sec in the next few years.

Really?

USC, Oklahoma and FSU might want a word with you….Believe me, their NIL isn’t paltry. There’s no guarantees…
USC & FSU both had a NIL budget of around $11 or $12 million. When you start talking $20 mil, you're getting into territory covered by pretty much only one other program - Ohio State.

If that $20M number is accurate, I think this is the perfect climate for him and UNC to be successful. The money + the perception of playing for a coach with such deep NFL roots that can help them best prepare for the next level, seems like a good landing spot for top recruits. I could see CFP for him in 2 years.

That number is accurate for each and every school based on the Congressional settlement. This is a bit of misinformation to make this story seem more special.

Pretty sure this would be for NIL that goes above and beyond the settlement payment + the new salary cap model. I don't think he'd have accepted this job with the only assurance being "we'll pay as much as the other schools."

The only question is if that $20M is on a per season basis.

No it’s just the settlement budget. That’s what is so laughable about this.

No. The settlement is something every school in America will be responsible for. It's for retroactive payments to players who didn't have the ability to obtain NIL money while they went to school.

Then, and I believe as part of the ruling above (could be wrong on that), there is a "salary cap" that basically allows a school to devote up to X amount of dollars to pay its players in all sports. Unlike the settlement, schools don't have to do this. There will be some that pay up to the maximum and many that pay something less.

On top of both of those things, NIL will still exist. It will probably be more aligned with the schools themselves in most cases, but it will still allow for an extra pool of money. So if the donors at a certain school want to go above and beyond the salary cap, they will be able to do so. This $20M falls into this category.

It's great for UNC, it's great for the ACC, may not be great for Pitt but I don't think that is either's concern. Pitt needs to start understanding what it needs to do in this environment. But now with Belichick, UNC and the ACC as a whole will get a visibility boost. Just like Colorado and the Big 12 games will be in prime TV slots for once for the ACC. So it is good as a whole. It can't hurt. And yeah, you know rising tides raises all boats.

Unless the Big 10 or SEC invites Carolina to dock their boat at their marina.

I am going to think even further outside the box than SMF here.....

Conference survival is evolving into which schools in which conferences have the cash to buy players. To this end, maybe the ACC is in a little better position than first believed?

1) SMU. Nothing more needs said
2) Stanford; While they have not been good as of late lets be honest, the donors are formidable
3) I am convinced that Notre Dame's time as an independent is closer than many think.
4) BYU. The mormons have more money than the SMU oil barons, as evidenced by a 7 Mill NIL to the best HS player in America. Get BYU in the ACC and get the mormons to open their big fat wallets.

Of course this is all a reach....but if ACC leaders are persuasive and these schools jump on the train the value of this league can only go one way.

I also believe the current teams are in a bit of a down cycle but can certainly bounce back. FSU is going to pay up, as will Clemson

I am bored this morning.

🙄

Unless Belichick is bringing in Tom Brady to QB, he’s going to be the same coach as Mack Brown….What’s Belichick’s record without Tom Brady????

Get a grip…
This just in--it isn't possible for any team to win 6 Super Bowls without great coaching, even with the all-time GOAT at QB. That's just a fact. I don't even like Belichick, but I sure as hell respect his abilities as a head football coach. None of that means he will be successful at the college level especially at a backwater like UNC, the game is so different than the NFL game--but the guy is the GOAT of NFL HCs without a doubt. The only real question is, is he motivated and hungry? It's hard to imagine at his stage of career and life that he is. Maybe his GF had given him renewed vigor.

Very few coaching changes would spark this kind frenzy. These people think they are buying the best coach that ever walked the face of the earth.

It doesn't take a coaching change at schools that are serious about winning. Or a change in AD. ...Boosters will trip over themselves to out give rival schools when the culture is right. And that attitude has to continue through coaching changes. Pitt had the winning football culture right in Majors 1. That lasted through Sherrill, Fazio, and Gottfried.

I was hopeful Pitt football recruiting fortunes would really turn around under Wanny. Unfortunately, the recruiting in the Wannstedt era was a huge disappointment.
Yet Wanny's recruiting, at least on paper, remains the best Pitt has had since Gottfried.

Disclaimer--this is not to be construed as an endorsement for Wanny--just stating the fact that he brought in far more highly rated recruitign classes than we've seen since.

Don't hold your breath for that to happen.

And on paper, his recruiting classes sucked. I don't think he signed a single class ranked in the Top 15.

I think how things ended in NE left a bad taste in his mouth. He’s a proud man so this is an opportunity to further enhance his legacy. JMO to explain his motives.

He does seem kinda mediocre without Brady. We all know how many super bowls he won with the Browns.

He had some in the national top 20, which Pitt hasn’t sniffed since.

I mean, Narduzzi’s average recruiting class is ranked in the 40s. Do you feel that Narduzzi has done a better job recruiting than Stache?

Folks forget Deion was coaching HS before jumping to a HBCU and winning immediately, and then jumping to a P5 school .
He actually did it the right want as a coach
He’s also not in his 70s

If we can be very honest
The real judgement of recruiting is the number of wins and nfl players

To that end - wanny’s best class only matched Walt’s

My first thought was, a good hire for UNC. A coach with a big name and reputation is a good hire for the school. That changed tonight when I saw that he stated that he was going to run a pro-style offense at UNC WHY???
Because a pro-style offense is what he knows and believes in.

Nothing wrong with it. Teams still win big with it at every level of football.

The college football I have loved for many years is dead. I didn't go to a single game this year, which hasn't happened in a very long time. I just can't get into NIL college football. But damn, I really enjoyed the volleyball game yesterday!

Nothing has actually changed as fans are concerned
It’s silly
The players have always changed

Huge for UNC. Wouldn’t shock me if they won the national championship in the next five years. They’ll get talent and Belichick will coach circles around these guys.

🙄

His buyout is 10 million the first of his contract. After that, his buyout is a mere 1 million dollars. That doesn’t sound like a guy who’s likely to stay around 5 years until he’s 78….

Yes, he could win the national championship with some help. For instance, Tom Brady, deflated balls, surveillance equipment, etc…

85-102 without the help…

It's good to know you can create a 20 year dynasty and win the Super Bowl 6 times just by having one great player at the QB position. Every other football coach out there is just one player away from being considered the all-time greatest. That must give them all tremendous hope.

He was a good coach for the Browns. At one point, they had one of the top 5 statistical defenses of all time on one of those teams. They didn't have the talent the Steelers did though. When he and Saban were in Cleveland, they basically invented the modern coverage scheme to defend single back offenses with pattern matching and saved cover 3 from itself. He was also defensive coordinator for some incredible defenses under Bill Parcells.

It's a good hire from an entertainment and short term football perspective, though it'll be a circus with his son longer term I'd guess. I like that his bible apparently includes requiring UNC to hire a general manager for talent acquisition because I don't imagine him as a natural recruiter.

The crazier part is the year before Belichick got to Cleveland, the Browns had statistically the worst scoring defense of any team during the entire decade. Ironically, the head coach of the ‘90 Browns was Bud Carson, who along with Belichick are 1A and 1B the greatest defensive coaches in football history.
