Bill Belichick to UNC

Gronk didn't join the Patriots until 2010. He didn't win a Super Bowl until 2014.

Belichick already had won 3 Super Bowls w/out him. The point was he won a bunch of games and big ones with essentially role players.

The constant was Brady and Bill.
The constant for wining a super bowls turns out was Brady - since he won another with TB and belicheck mass what , one more playoff ?

Lucked into Brady?

Brady was in line to be a UDFA. He started 2 years at Michigan, put up meh numbers, split time with Drew Henson his senior year, and had a weak combine. Belichick had identified him before the draft as a player with the intangibles necessary to win in the NFL. Nobody else did. Brady is the lucky one. He likely wouldn’t have been drafted at all, and if he’d have gone to any other coach or team, he probably never would have seen the field.
Yet took him in the 6th and if Drew Bledsoe doesn’t get injured Brady never gets a chance

Took Brady in the 6th because that’s where BB had him valued. He did not project to the NFL based on his measurables, kind of like Brock Purdy. Doubtful any other team even had Brady in on their draft boards.

If Bledsoe had stayed healthy, he may be the focus of this debate, and Brady would be a little remembered college QB.

Great point
I’m sure the drafting will improve for UNC .

Show me where I said BB will succeed at UNC. I didn’t, and I honestly don’t think he will, because the NFL game is so different than the college game it just doesn’t translate. Plus UNC is doomed to be nationally irrelevant, they always have been, always will be no matter who coaches them. He’s in his 70s and hasn’t coached in college in almost 50 years.

The debate is about whether he’s the best NFL head coach ever, or whether Tom Brady was the only reason he won 6 Super Bowls.

Those 1st couple of years with Brady, he was a better than average QB. That roster was not impressive. I was just looking at their roster compared to Vermeil's Rams and it was night and day. Look at his roster compared to Manning's Colts squads in that early era. At that time, everyone had Manning over Brady as the #1 QB in the NFL. Yet, B&B beat them.

Listen to DJ Williams on Brandon Marshall's podcast. It was quite entertaining listening to Shady and him argue over the Brady/Belichick debate.

I sound like a Belichick apologist. I'm not. He doesn't need one. I think he and Brady were the best in the league.

Lets Go Football GIF by Pittsburgh Steelers

Mike agrees - ZERO losing seasons regardless who the QB is..

The only difference is no one puts Mike in the GOAT conversation. Yet, Bill's name is ALWAYS at or near the top..
Not going to turn this into a Tomlin thread but Mike isn't in anyone's GOAT conversation because he isn't winning championships. Actually, his playoff record is pretty embarrassing. Bill was always near the top because he understood how to find that one extra guy and put him in a role that fits. I don't think that will translate to college and that's mostly because the game is just so different. As they say, we'll see.

Because a pro-style offense is what he knows and believes in.

Nothing wrong with it. Teams still win big with it at every level of football.
A pro-style of offense will work in the NFL because the NFL only cares about who wins each week. College football teams not only have to win, but they have to win in a manner that catches the eyes of the pollsters around the country. Look at what happened to FSU last year, undefeated and not invited to the playoffs because pollsters (and of course the committee) felt that a 2 loss Alabama tram was better then FSU. That would be like the 1972 undefeated Miami Dolphins at 14-0 (regular season) being told they were not good enough to qualify for the playoffs because the NFL Commissioner (Pete Roselle) felt that the Pittsburgh Steelers at 11-3 were better then them.
I stand by initial point, if Belichick runs that offense, he will be nothing more then an average college coach at best.

If he's playing for ACC titles under the modern format, he's getting into the playoff more times then not.

I think you might be surprised who runs a pro-style offense and who doesn't at the collegiate level.

He will not win an ACC title at UNC. Honestly, in my opinion, he was a poor coaching hire by the Tar Heels.
