Clemson trip questions on campus and hotels

I did several business trips down there. Your right not much to choose. I stayed at the Hampton and the Courtyard those are close to campus. There are some other less $$$ expensive hotels not far from the Hampton. Guessing closer to campus the higher the price on game weekends. There are some hotels just off 85 at the exit. Greenville could have some options as well.
Depending on the gametime and the airport that works best for you, I might even just stay in Charlotte or Atlanta.
This is what we are doing based on the recommendation of one of my husband's colleagues who is a graduate and now lives in Greenville. We're flying into Charlotte, renting a car and already reserved a room at the Westin Poinsett in Greenville. Can't wait!!!!
This is what even the opposing teams have to do when they play at Clemson. you guys are right, there's no where to stay in Clemson itself, a town that makes State College look like lower Manhattan. I made this trip with my alma mater's football team several years ago and we all stayed at a hotel in Greenville and bused to Clemson for the practices and the game itself. This was my second trip to Clemson, I had been there about 12 years ago with a buddy who lives in Greenville. I was entirely underwhelmed with the campus, town, bars, and scene on both occasions. Let me tell you if you think State College is a cow town, wait until you see this place.That 25 mile cab ride back to Greenville at 2:30 a.m. after a night of partying that ended at Clemson's top college bar, the "Esso Club" (the place is nothing special), was NOT optimal.
I did stand on my team's sideline in Death Valley for the game, which was very cool. The stadium atmosphere is everything the rest of the Clemson experience is not--awesome. If you were going to pick one road trip to see Pitt play, I'd skip this place.
I looked at greenville, that seems to be a dump too from what I can register. I don't need to see sites to have a good time as the primary reason is to see a football game. But it does look like traffic will be a bear getting in and out. Looks like little parking for visitors.
If you're going strictly for the game experience, Clemson is great. Death Valley is a very good college football venue and they go nuts in there. I didn't get much of a flavor for the tailgating but from what i could see it looked OK. If you were hoping for a road trip to a cool college town with good bars, a beautiful campus, cool sights, stuff to do, Clemson is not that place. I can tell you the first time i went there I had a mental image of the place that was way off. It was a big letdown. Downtown Greenville is actually pretty nice, some good nightlife, etc.
Are you trying to get back to Pittsburgh after the game? If not, I'd make a reservation in Greeneville, in case it is a late game, and one in Charlotte if it is afternoon or noon. Charlotte is a fun city with lots to do and beautiful women.
Not sure since were rolled out of there on buses with a police escort and traffic cops clearing a path for us right after the game. I would guess it would be pretty difficult just given how landlocked the place is and how many people are crammed into such a small area. Do you need to catch a flight?
I'd do that then. No flights other than Southwest are really refundable. Atlanta is a fun city and only about 2 hours away.
Either way, I would definitely stay in Charlotte or Atlanta, the whole weekend, if I could. If not, Greenville is ok.
Hopefully you can get a few buddies together to make the trip with you, and spend some time before and after the game tailgating, bar-hooping etc. Looks like it could be pretty good if you can find the right area to set up. Friendly fans, lots of good looking women. I was with the group that traveled on the team plane and buses so we were stuck with the lame school-sponsored tailgate near a big artificial lake about a mile from the stadium. It was not the place to be.
It's the busiest airport in the country (and maybe the world) and a complete cluster f. Worst travel experience I ever had. And Delta blows too FWIW.
I lived in Greenville SC for 5 years and my current company is headquarters in Greenville. Stay there. Great town. Great bars, great restaurants and staying Greenville to Clemson in distance is like staying in Cranberry to Oakland.
Greenville is just as good as Charlotte, IMO. Not Atlanta, Atlanta is a really fun town. But save that trip for Ga Tech.

My son is a student at Clemson, we live in the area and are have season tickets. It is funny to read your unfounded impressions of somewhere you've never been. You will not find a cooler walkable downtown than Greenville. All Hotels within 20 miles of Clemson will have two night minimums and premium pricing. Do you know why? Because this is as good as a College football atmosphere anywhere. Come to this game and you will see what we are missing in Heinz field. Better get your tickets early because this will sell out all 80,000 tickets and will be a sea of orange (I'll be wearing my new Pitt Script 
) The whole litte town is one big tailgate, and here is your warning, GET THERE EARLY. 80,000 people coming in on 3 small highways = parking lot. Plan on tailgating an hour or so after the game too.
There where numerous construction projects at the stadium this year but those should be wrapping up soon. The Biltmore and Asheville are a great side trip, although not the best time of year. My family enjoys hiking the numerous trails in the Northern Greenville/Asheville area. Not counting for game day traffic, Asheville is an easy 1 hour drive. Charlotte or Atlanta are too far away IMHO

Vero beach. Thanks for the info. So getting out is going to be horrible. My problem is if it is a late game I don't want to get into some hotel at midnight and then spend all Sunday in the car. Ideally for me, early game and get halfway home Saturday night

We are thinking about doing a Florida vacation in November which will enable us to go to the Miami game on Nov 5 and then the Clemson game on Nov 12, on the way home. It also helps that we (and most people) are off for Veterans Day on that Friday.
Has anyone done a 2 game roadie before? This would be my first.

I have been to all three over the last 10 years for games and other travel. I had a buddy play for Clemson and went there for a couple games, while he played for them and a couple since. If I am a 20 something guy looking for fun around the game trip and don't have a place to stay in Clemson, I would much rather spend my time in Charlotte or Atlanta than Greenville. If you are traveling to and from Pittsburgh by air, it will be cheaper and easier. If you are traveling by car, I'd certainly rather cut that trip down on Friday and Sunday by being Charlotte. Either way, I don't think anyone said anything bad about Greenville in the thread. Certainly not anyone who said they have never been there.
Greenville is fine, but if he (I believe ratking is a younger guy) is looking for fun and nightlife, I would definitely vote for Charlotte. But sounds like you might be a better Greenville tour guide, so maybe you can point him in the right directions.
Ratking young. 37. I feel young. I am about soaking up atmosphere and seeing a good game. My wife is a coach and her season will have started by then. My son has no desire to be in the car that long. I don't know if any of season ticket buddies are going or not. I have no issue driving by myself but I could also do a family trip to Uva this year. The only thing is with Clemson I would have to wait 12 years before a return trip.
Actually, getting out is not that bad if you know how to do it. There are point where you can park and get out quickly after the game. You just have to be willing to walk a significant distance back and forth to do it.
Worst part of these new super conferences and 8 game schedules. I wish they could just all be 12 teams and 9 games, but I'd rather have Pitt safe and secure in a good conference.

It is. Like I said, I lived there for 5 years and my company's HQ is there, so as we get closer, I will give out restaurant and hotel tips. Downtown Greenville is really cool. Really nice. Lots of good places to eat for a town that size. It is fairly upscale area.
If I am looking for fun and nightlife, I would choose Atlanta, which is a great city by the way. But Greenville ain't bad, especially downtown. If you stay out in the burbs, then it is like anywhere else.

Clemson is strictly a college town. Went to the Pitt BB game there last year. Bars and restaurants were college oriented for the most part.
