Do we need to recruit a point guard?

He has flashes of brilliance. I do think if we had a big and he was the guy off the bench, he would kick @ss in that role. He has been holding his own against most. He doesnt box out well though, and needs to.

Brown is more suited to be a 4 rather than a 5. He would pair nicely with a physical beast playing the 5. The synergy would be very good.

We do need to recruit a point guard, but not because Xavier can't run the point. He'll be in the NBA in two years at most, so ideally you'd want an understudy on the roster next year.

Sometimes X tries to do too much, but his style would also be a lot more effective with an interior presence who can finish with consistency.

Xavier Johnson reminds me of guys like Trey Burke and Tony Carr. Both left after their sophomore year. Carr didnt make the NBA however. I would be very surprised if Johnson stayed 4 years. He'll probably leave after his sophomore or junior year.

First would be an interior presence who can "catch the ball". Neither of our 2 bigs yesterday seemed to be able to accomplish catching the ball.

You know whose stats look almost identical to Johnson right now across the board? Kemba Walker from Uconn when Walker was a sophomore. Johnsons numbers are arguably better as a freshmen. Ironically both players did most of their damage knifing right into the paint with dribble drive. It wasnt until junior year Walker developed the step back and 3 point firepower. Walker had major turnover problems as the lead guard when he was a sophomore too. Johnson will be far better at Pitt in 2 years than now. He is going to be far better when Capel brings in better talent at every position within 2 years too

Developing a consistent 3 point shot will take his game to the next level.

I love Xaiver. How could you not love Xaiver? He is tough, fearless and blows by players and makes difficult finishes. He has to start (somewhere) and play big minutes.

Watching the games everything looks great, but you look at the box score and see very few assists and lots of turnovers. Some of that has to do with who he is passing to, some of it does not. Xaiver has 19 assists and 33 turnovers in conference play.

Would we be better off with Trey at the point OR:

Do we need to recruit a PG who can play immediately? Do we need a PG that is effective against the zone? (Someone said to expect nothing but zone). Do we need someone to actually run offense?

I think we do.
I think we see his assist to turnover ratio improve dramatically next year. He has the quicks and sees floor well.. just gets out of control too much. true freshman point guard.

I tend to believe that Xavier will get more assists when we get bigs who can open up for passes (and catch them) better than we do now.

I'm not worried about Xavier Johnson AT ALL. Put a quality big man and a shooter on the floor with him and his assists-to-turnover ratio flips.

Why? A lot of Xavier's turnovers come from what would normally be a penetration-and-dish/kick play. He has NO TROUBLE penetrating and is a top level finisher in this league (yes, a top finisher). Finishing at the rim becomes even easier for Xavier (and Trey for that matter) when teams can't sag off of perimeter shooters or leave frontcourt bigs. If defenders leave to help, Xavier has already shown enough good vision and passing skills to get the assist.
