How do they justify Florida State with 8 votes? The win over Colorado? Ok. But Florida only getting a single vote in coaches and none in AP. Virginia with 6 in AP after getting blown out by Wisky. At this point, Pitt won’t be getting ranked at all this season.

And none of it matters. Few things in life are as meaningless as college basketball polls. Been saying for years, since the RPI days that ESPN should show the RPI (now NET) rank instead of the poll ranking. That is what the NCAAT is based on.

Of the teams you mentioned, these are their KenPom's, which is close to NET

Florida 28
Virginia 42
Pitt 43
Florida State 71

Florida, Pitt, FSU, and Virginia all have something in common. They either aren't very good right now, or don't have the wins to show for it.

It certainly doesn't matter in November.

It matters a lot. Rankings bring exposure. Exposure brings fans, more tv, ultimately more donations and better players.

Exposure may be the most important part of building a program. Just another reason why Pitt scheduling opposite the Steelers next week is so stupid.

Being ranked 24th will not bring $1 extra in donations, more TV (networks already set), better attendance, or better recruits

It absolutely does. It means your scores get announced when they do the top 25 scores. It means talking heads talk about you. This is the entertainment business. Getting your brand mentioned ALWAYS matters.

Every mention of your brand on ESPN is worth $. Every mention of your brand on Fox Sports is worth $. Every mention of your brand on CBS sports is worth $. Those mentions happen far more often when ranked.
