It’s among the dumbest arguments I’ve ever heard. HL is supposedly a very good AD. She isn’t micro managing every aspect of every part of every program, I’m sure. She isn’t Scott Barnes.

Any decisions to pay or not pay athletes comes from a higher level than AD. AD’s job at universities with successful athletic programs is to turn a blind eye and keep the train moving and the $$ coming in!
Yea, they may have an idea that players are being bought but there would be 0 way to actually prove it unless you have a wiretap or one of the parents or maybe a whistleblowing assistant squeals. None of these AD's have any proof their coaches are cheating. None.

McDonald: This has been the most fascinating recruitment in a while for me. It’s pretty rare for a top recruit to be nearing a decision and nobody seems to have a good idea of where he’s going. He’s kept an incredible poker face during the recruiting process. I’ll go out on a limb here and predict he ends up at Florida State.
Shaw: Florida State or LSU. In what came into the week as an Ohio State and Pittsburgh battle, Florida State and LSU both provided Reid some cause for pause. Florida State came into Thursday as the odds on favorite and Leonard Hamilton is laser focused on this one, and when Ham gets laser focused he is tough to beat. I have been told throughout this process that Reid vibes with Will Wade as a kindred spirit, so the late push from Wade was well received. I honestly do not think Reid knows where he is going as of this writing, but I do believe it will be between these two... or maybe a school that comes up between now and the actual decision day... or maybe a pro league, or well actually who knows?
Wood: I don’t think you can ever count LSU and Will Wade out but I’m anticipating Reid will be wearing the Garnet and Gold of the Florida State Seminoles. I just wish I had some credible info to support that anticipation. Reid and his mom have done a spectacular job of not telling anyone where he is going. From what I gather that is largely due to Reid just wasn’t ready to make a decision on April 15. He has good options but one of those options has a pretty good track record of getting 7-footers better and putting them in the first round of the NBA Draft.

That's almost 3 weeks old. Nobody knows anything.
The Cassius Winston recruitment comes to mind. Everyone on earth knew the kid was an MSU lock from 8th grade on, except the Pitt coaching staff and fans. Izzo made Winston priority #1 early on and spent a ton of time and effort personally recruiting him. I'm sure even Smoke knew he had no chance but used his relationship with Winston's dad to play it out and give his boss the impression that he could deliver a top Detroit prospect.
Pitt has a better chance with this guy than with Winston. Which is not to say a good chance--but in Reid's case at least, as opposed to Winston, he is not pre-ordained to any particular program. Seems like Reid to Pitt would be too good to be true, and until we see it, that's what it is.

The best Pitt can hope for is mom likes Capel, because the only thing we know is that she is front and center in his recruiting. He's likely going where she feels it's best for him, which is probably the best thing for him. I'm not sure bags work with strong mothers like this. Don't know her, but highly doubt her son is for sale.
Agree with all of that. My thoughts all along are that there is a likelihood ER was waiting for some things to get clarified in addition to what you have mentioned. So he backed off his original date because maybe there was information (roster-wise, for ex.?) that he didn’t have the necessary answers to, at that time, but must feel he does now. I believe he wants the right fit. We’ll see soon if that’s Pitt or not.

Can’t wait for the overreaction from Gary and the usual suspects if Reid goes elsewhere. Not landing a 5-star is no indictment on Capel. Now if you want to indict him for not landing someone like Khadim Sy, Qudus Wahab or that dude who ended up at Wichita State and averaged 1 ppg then sure, that is fair.
Or Diallo at OSU and Coleman at ECU who also averaged about 1 PPG. Capel sure did miss on some putridly bad centers.
