What I view as the realistic, stretch targets for this team remain unchanged from the start. Play .500 ball and compete for an NIT bid.

Not even worried about the first three. I have no doubts here.

The last one is what matters.

I'll second that.

NIT is going to be real tough. We would have to win 7 ACC games (6+1 in ACCT) to make it. That would make us 17-16.
Agreed. I just want them to 'compete' for it, meaning, still have it within earshot in February. That said, it's certainly looking like there are a few more weaker ACC teams than I anticipated before the season began.

As DT states the last is most critical--at least getting 2 quality bigs. Although I don't object to getting a deadeye 3 point shooter and we may get one--I don't see it as a huge priority because I believe our three freshmen will improve their outside shooting as they gain experience and because they will get better looks from 3 point land if opponents have to pay serious attention to better quality bigs in the low blocks.

Although I would be delighted with 15 wins, I would not be disappointed with 12-14 wins which I think is more realistic than 15 and as long as HCJC keeps them playing hard no matter how many few ACC wins occur.

Let’s make it clear. These are your goals for your fandom.

Coach Capel and the team’s goals are the only ones that matter.

As a fan in terms of this years teams accomplishments everything else from here on out is gravy. They already have shown they have high end talents to build around and a staff that gets the most out the players. They also play a very entertaining style of basket ball.

Given what Capel did last year with little to no time I have no doubt they’ll add significant talent to the roster to make it a NCAA contender next season

I’m just enjoying each game and watching these kids improve

I thought that was obvious, unless HCJC posts here.

OP says “our team” like he actually has some influence. And to be frank this board now has little idea how to even root for this team. The team has passed this board by.

It's much easier rooting for this team than recent seasons - though for me it has much to do with believing the vision that the current coach is pursuing. 15 wins is more than reasonable, and I think a high side is probably 17 wins. As previously mentioned, the next recruiting class as a bolstering and compliment to the current group in the rotation is critical - but I think the current staff is up to that challenge.

Can you explain further?

A lot of the folks coming back after the arid wasteland of past two years still come with a view of basketball from two regimes ago.

Capel’s hoops are vastly different but the old guard on the board still view it through a past prism and lay doubts in the team because they are not within the view scope of those watching.

Honestly it’s like the old guard of journalism and politics trying to understand Trump. Whether you like Trump or don’t he does not do things like the status quo of the past. So old school press have no clue how to cover him.

That is what I am sensing from this board now with HCJC.

Still don’t get what you are getting at here, and I am curious. These points all seem to be generalizations and similes. Can you provide any specifics or examples?

Actually, I would say the most important thing that can come out of our ACC season is to win enough games to become an attractive option for grad transfer bigs. I often say that HS recruits dont care about winning, and mostly that remains true. But, top grad transfers often want to go to the best scenario where they can start and win for their last year. If we can win 5-6 games, Capel can sell these guys on being that last piece on maybe not just an NCAAT team but a Top 20 team. With these guards, if we had good bigs, we'd be really good.

We dont need a Blair or Gray or Adams. But someone like those Troy bigs or the dude from Duquesne. Guys like that and we can be real good next year.

It is Christmas. I won’t beat people up any more.

In the same boat. Capel & Company clearly "get it", and have already allayed any concerns that they might not coach as well as they recruit.

Wait - I'm talking about the modern Lair - I meant to qualify; "reasonable & somewhat knowledgeable fans" have had their coaching concerns already relieved, and never doubted he will recruit as good as anyone could at Pitt given the present circumstances.

This is a Pitt basketball message board so one would assume Pitt is “our team”. I hope we win every game, but realize that isn’t anywhere near realistic. Are trying to say I am expecting too much or not enough?

I agree with this approach.

We’ve got some very intriguing young guards, but the key to taking the next step will be getting ACC-level bigs. I’ve never been sold that we are a serious option for Cockburn and something has shifted for Wahab that, at the very least, calls into question our place as the leader if not totally taken us out of that spot. Coulibaly is a high upside guy that, like XJ, seems like he may have been overlooked but he’s going to need a good bit of polish and won’t be a day 1 starter.

The best route forward will be to exceed expectations in the ACC schedule and then sell playing time to Grad Transfers and decommits in the spring. Missing on Cockburn/Wahab may/will be disappointing, but I truly think the grad transfer market could be our best friend for a year or two until we have a better looking resume to sell

Bigs that HCJC sees in his system go to the league(s) before they even become grad transfers. Not sure coach is looking too hard in that direction.

The team and especially the young guards has already shown me more than I expected. Anything more than 3 or 4 ACC wins would be gravy for me.

Recruiting, bring in a couple bigs to go along with the guards and I’ll be thrilled.

Longterm, I always felt the last 5 years of Dixon were a good longterm goal for the program. Compete for the NCAA almost every year..make it more often than not. The only thing I would Ike is higher upside...a top 4 or 5 seed every five years or so would be great.

We were never in the lead for Wahab. The longer he takes to decide the better as Capel is still making up ground.

Yes, we were. Had he announced two weeks ago, we were likely the pick. Georgetown scares me a lot with Wahab, as they’re close to his home base, coached by a legendary big man, and have a tradition of churning out NBA big men.

In keeping with the nature of the thread, we need to develop a culture that we can sell. I’ve said it 100 times and I’ll continue to say it, we need to get guys drafted into the NBA. Every school we’re fighting for recruits with can sell that dream much better than we can right now

I’ve heard Wahab was leaning our way since the Fall. This was the same source who told me Akok was solid to UConn long before that decision, even though that Steel Curtain person and others shouted me down because it wasn’t the news they wanted to hear.

Right now no one has an indication where this is going, but we were in a very good place with Wahab throughout his visitation process, that much I am confident in.

Returning to the original topic of fan goals (really hopes and wishes) for a Pitt hoops to return to prominence---

(1) A minimum of 2-3 ACC wins this season and 12-13 wins overall, hopefully 2-3 wins more than that minimum but not required as long as team remains competitive throughout the ACC schedule.

(2) Addition of at least 2 quality bigs for next season so that 9 ACC wins and making at leastvthe bubble for the NCAAT next season.

(3) The addition of 3rd and 4th straight quality recruiting classes for 2020 and 2021 and a definite NCAAT invite in March 2021 with many more on the horizon.
