There is the underlying issue.Heather made a huge mistake extending Capel. He did nothing to deserve it.
It’s been a tough 18 months for him believing terrible Twitter sourcesLive look at Gary

The situation is just sad all around.Enervating news for Pitt fans!
The whole two dozen of us!
That’s why he’ll get more time. It looks bad for HL to extend him then fire him. It’s not like Stallings. She has ownership of this failure.Heather made a huge mistake extending Capel. He did nothing to deserve it.
What looks worse: firing him and eating the money after you gave him the extension, or bringing him back for no other reason than you don’t want to pay the buyout that you signed him to?That’s why he’ll get more time. People don’t like to admit mistakes. Especially expensive ones. What looks worse: firing him and eating the money after you gave him the extension, or bringing him back for no other reason than you don’t want to pay the buyout that you signed him to?

We can’t eat the moneyThe latter
I remember at the time there were posters here saying she was just a compliance wonk when hired, and didn't have the chops to run a P5 programs. I thought maybe it was a little sexist, but now I'm leaning to that way of thinking.
At the end of next BB season, they are very likely both gone. She has to be held accountable to her decision and poor contract negotiations
And for historical perspective, the longest streak of losing seasons Pitt basketball has ever had was between 1965 and 1969...5 straight. You can throw in 1970's 12-12 season as a "non-winning" season and extend it to 6.16 straight years without a losing season, followed by what looks to be at least 7 straight years without a winning season. It looks like we're almost half way to trying match one of the most remarkable periods of sustained success any basketball program has ever had with an equally inglorious streak.
Looking full on at a 7th straight losing seasons. Let that sink in. We are now one of the programs that we used to pity just a decade ago. Thanks SB and PG.
Stallings/Capel is the equivalent to Hackett/Majors 2.And for historical perspective, the longest streak of losing seasons Pitt basketball has ever had was between 1965 and 1969...5 straight. You can throw in 1970's 12-12 season as a "non-winning" season and extend it to 6.
So we've set a record at 6-straight losing seasons and are looking to extend that.
It's quite difficult to lose that much year after year. Well done PG!

Does PG equate to the Chancellor or Trucking Guy?
Yes, it was him and SB. Absolutely. Dumbest move since 1938. A dynamic duo to rival the killer Bs.Yeah it’s PGT guys fault ! You effing morons
Heather won't hire the next basketball coach. Mark this down as an SMF prediction. She is going to get out of town the next chance she gets while she can still get a P5 job like Barnes. She isn't going to stay here and have the basketball team ruin her resume. She won't be gone because football is saving her skin.

They've handled it fine. You have to remember it is academia, and they've done nothing out of the norms of anywhere else. Pitt continues to have strong demand and numbers on the academic side.I've been less than impressed with his handling of the pandemic at the university as well. Quickly approaching J Dennis levels of incompetence.

She may leave, but she's not getting fired without an unexpected scandal.Heather won't hire the next basketball coach. Mark this down as an SMF prediction. This is a general question not specific to this situation. She has a lot going on at Pitt and her relationship with the Chancellor is strong from what I can tell.
Her problems are only financialYes, a little self reflection is good for the character but:
1. We know there are a many lousy AD's around and all that I can think of are men. No problem with the initial hire of JC by HL. The extension was a dishonest evaluation of the program based on pleasing the eggheads, Heather could have overcome her shortcomings(if indeed she is a "compliance wonk") by waiting until progress was observable but now:
2. Heather's problem is probably now twofold, financial and/or political. If by next Christmas it all looks the same or slightly better, just short of NIT, she will look for another job. She does not want to be someone who fired a "great role model" (a label acquired outside of observable outcomes), nor does she want to ruffle HCJC's feathers lest he put the "word" out, so I am sure she will continue to smile and support him in public and in private, she needs his endorsement for her next gig.

Is the Chancellor the be-all, end-all for hiring and firing administrative personnel, no board or overseers?

She sought the support to make a change -
The boosters didn’t want to pay the freight
there are no political issues
He’s a coach
Coaches get fired
I know she isn't getting fired. She will leave so basketball doesn't ruin her career. She may leave, but she's not getting fired without an unexpected scandal.

But almost never do they overrule what an AD or Chancellor want to do.BOT signs off on all high profile moves
Remember those "its over" memes by BballinsiderfromPitt? To his credit, he gets a W over me this week for disagreeing with my prediction that Xavier Johnson will not be the starting PG for an NCAAT team....and they barely, barely got in. But he and many others were no match for my wisdom on the Capel situation. The entire year, I have guaranteed Capel is coming back, mostly due to the buyout and that's before I knew what the buyout was officially. Welcome to 7-13!!!!
Another W for the 🐐
