He’s back per Rothstein

By the end of the weekend.. I fully expect a Vader Post proclaiming all the “Big Time Talent” Capel is recruiting !!!

I'm not sure Vader will even think that we need to bring in more big time talent to be good. Remember, he kept saying early in the year that all we need is to get a bunch of these guys to end up with Offensive Power Ratings (it sounds more impressive if you put the "power" in there than if you leave it out like everyone else does) between 95 and 100. Well let's look at where we ended up.

Gueye: 104.7

Well, OK, he's not coming back. But let's look at the other guys.

Hugley: 99.6
Burton: 99.4
Horton: 95.1
Oladapo: 94.6 (we aren't going to quibble over 0.4 are we?)
Collier: 94.3 (once again, 0.7, no issue here)
Odukale: 92.4 (OK, that one needs to be a little better)

But look at that. We've got essentially five out of six guys coming back in Vader magical range of what will mean good things in the future. If we could just bring in one or two decent players we'll basically have everything we need!

Well, either that or the notion that bringing back a bunch of guys with offensive ratings between 94 and 100 is a really good thing is, well, lunacy.

One or the other.

That’s why he’ll get more time. It looks bad for HL to extend him then fire him. It’s not like Stallings. She has ownership of this failure.
It definitely looks bad for HL. That said, why should she care? She's making $900K+ and there is simply no way that Pitt is ever going to fire her. She can sit tight for another year or two, fire Capel and hire some other coach. Zero accountability.

Cruzer

D1 bb is a business and any business that’s struggling to attract fans/customers and consequently revenue is not going to pay out a kings ransom to rid themselves of a key employee. There’s so little attendance hence revenue coming in from home games they won’t lose much money with the few fans they have leave . Re evaluate next yr or until the buyout becomes feasible.

Money > Winning at the University of Pittsburgh ! ( told ya )

Yes, it was him and SB. Absolutely. Dumbest move since 1938. A dynamic duo to rival the killer Bs.

The Trucks guy requested a meeting with the Chancellor to discuss Dixon's recruiting problems and making a change in response to Dixon not getting Mike Thorne, the graduate transfer from Charlotte. I absolutely positively KNOW this meeting happened, from someone who the trucks guy TOLD about the meeting and someone else who was IN the meeting. Dixon knew the meeting happened too, and that was the beginning of the end for Dixon. I don't know who SB is.

he said he’ll be back for like the last 2 months. Not a W for you
No, only after the buyout article came out, he switched.

90% of the board thought he was gone. I was right, as always.

If its any consolation, I guarantee he is fired next year unless he gets close to the NCAAT AND returns a team with a realistic shot at making it the next year.

He was a terrible hire in the first place. Already performed poor as a head coach, so there was little reason to try him again at Pitt.

So this team is where they’re at at least in part due to Mike Thorne? Might be the most depressing thing I’ve ever read on this board.

I assumed SB was Barnes but maybe that was too obvious.

Heather won't hire the next basketball coach. Mark this down as an SMF prediction. She is going to get out of town the next chance she gets while she can still get a P5 job like Barnes. She isn't going to stay here and have the basketball team ruin her resume.
Lol why on earth would another athletic department hire her other than being a woman?

Remember those "its over" memes by BballinsiderfromPitt? To his credit, he gets a W over me this week for disagreeing with my prediction that Xavier Johnson will not be the starting PG for an NCAAT team....and they barely, barely got in. But he and many others were no match for my wisdom on the Capel situation. The entire year, I have guaranteed Capel is coming back, mostly due to the buyout and that's before I knew what the buyout was officially. Welcome to 7-13!!!!

Another W for the 🐐
I love how u always mention me yet never tag me. I know you’re scared because I have said for 2 months he’d be back because I knew about the contract 2 months ago schmuck. Pitt basketball is dead

That Spring was very damaging for Dixon. Only a couple years removed from being a 1 seed and recruiting kids who grew up remembering Pitt as an elite program, he struck out on so many players to bad programs

Chester Frazier to UAB
The kid who went to Fordham
A walk-on from Michigan who chose Arizona State
Mike Thorne

That was so depressing and made many Pitt fans wonder what the heck is going on.

there are no political issues
He’s a coach
Coaches get fired
Firing people of minority status is in conflict with virtually every precept of any schools diversity statement. Being intentional about hiring individuals from underrepresented minorities is a way of life. Firing is the opposite of hiring. See the selection from Pitt's own statement. I believe Pitt is committed to the statement. Get with it it's 2022

"How do we reflect our commitment to diversity? We do so by intentionally recruiting and supporting a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. By encouraging and fostering diverse research and creative teams. By devoting our full energy to bringing out the very best in our students and colleagues."

Barnes is a pretty obvious choice so that's probably who @CrazyPaco is referring to, but I was never given any information as to whether or not Barnes was in the meeting. I also shouldn't say that it was due to Mike Thorne. But if you recall, at that time, Dixon was missing on many recruits and Thorne was probably more or less "the last straw." The request for the meeting was made right after Thorne picked Illinois.

I sure do recall. Never understood it or had any clue why and probably never will.

I know you weren’t saying it was due to Thorne. It is another interesting tidbit like some of the other stuff that’s been posted over time. I’ve always been pretty certain some people here knew more than what was ever said but have understood why it hasn’t all jut been posted all over the place. But thanks for sharing.

Over the years, I have been told plenty of things about many subjects, and I realize that rumors are rumors.

But this meeting was told to me by someone who Trucks told about the meeting. And then it was completely, independently verified by someone else who is very close to another person who was in the meeting. THAT'S when I completely believed it.

We can’t eat the money
The boosters were unwilling
Hence this statement after her meeting with them

From what I'm told, it's not quite so much that they are unwilling. It's that the buyout is too much, and too much to justify regardless of whether or not boosters will cover most of it. The mistake here seems to be extending Capel's contract before he had any demonstrated success.

I 100% believed your 1st post.

I’ve never met anyone from this board but it’s not hard to know who has credibility. I can’t imagine you’d say anything like this if you didn’t believe it to be totally accurate.

Now, to build back credibility with us, he needs to get rid of Jason, and hire an aggressive recruiter- AAU type coach with connections - from the MD-DC area Who comes with players.

Well I'm on record that she wont hire the next coach. Maybe we can get your boy Jurich and he can deliver Pitino. But why would we want to be good at basketball?
Rick Pitino turned down an elite job in Maryland. But he’s coming to Pitt. Sometimes you are so dumb I don’t even know how you function. If Ed Cooley ever left, he’d walk to Providence though.

I don't know who exactly was at the meeting but he was clearly in the middle of everything and responsible for the replacement and awful transition, then didn't bother to see anything through.

You know what a decent person would have done? Set a meeting with the AD and the coach and ask how he can help stop the bleeding, not going straight to the top behind people's backs trying to pull the rug out from someone. I'll say this for the thousandth time: people don't forget how to coach, and quality coaching at that level is one of the rarest commodity there is.

It's appropriate that the warm glow of numerous trucking signs now eerily illuminate our barren arena .

3 things

- I think Pitino would only do the ACC or Big East at this point

- He would 100% work for Jurich

- Stop calling Maryland an elite job. They are a run-of-the mill B10 program. Sure, they have some advantages but also some disadvantages (like getting lost in the crowded DC market).

Maryland is an ELITE job. ELITE ELITE. Kids grow up wanting to play for Maryland.

Expect Pitino to not have to move and be coaching in the Big East next year. Will be done in the next week or so

And the fact that the Chancellor actually took this meeting was a big issue for Dixon. I don't think anything came of the meeting (meetings actually) but like I said, the fact that the Chancellor took the meeting was a problem. But it was 180 degrees from the relationship Dixon had with Nordenberg.

She is the best AD overall Pitt has had. Basketball isn’t valued and you can tell by accepting punting on next season. She has nearly every other sport including the only one that truly matters to the boosters performing at nearly as high a level or higher than an educated fan could expect.

Pitt fans whined and whined about Coach Dixon and the golden age of Pitt basketball and we got exactly what we deserve. Pitt is not and likely never will be a basketball blue blood but Dixon had us real close. Pitt should have done what Purdue did when Painter had some down seasons and supported him and look for ways to assist a great coach.

Maryland is a very good job. I wouldn’t call it elite, but definitely isn’t run of the mill.
