Here are some of the excuses I've heard from people about why they were NOT...

at the Marshall - Pitt game yesterday...
- Their child had a soccer game
- It was raining
- It was a night game
- The team is not playing well
- The team they are playing is not any good
- Narduzzi not giving the "younger" players a chance
- Peterman sucks
- The students don't go to the games, why should I
- There is no game day atmosphere
- Their defense is horrible
- It costs too much money to park at the games
- The cost of food is too expensive and it doesn't taste very good
- I had to work
- The cost of beer is too expensive
- I live to far away from the game, it takes me over an hour to get to the game
- The people in front of me stand up at times and I can't see the game
- I'm tired of having fans from the opposing team sitting in my section
- Pittsburgh has a lot of sports teams, why spend my money on watching an average college football team
- If Pitt would have beat either Oklahoma State or North Carolina, I'd be there because they be ranked higher
- The traffic going to and from the game is bad
I know that people in Pittsburgh like to think that they are great sports fans, but the reality of it is, they are not. They are quite simply "front-runners". They want to be part of the "excitement" that is going on for a given game. That is why so many people attended the penn state game and so few attended the Marshall game. The next big crowd will be at the Virginia Tech game IF both teams enter the game with at least a 5-2 record.
For me, the only real excuse listed is having to work, the others are a "choice" that we all have to make.
Those who are the "real" fans of the Pitt football team attend games despite all of the above, those who are the "front-runner" fans don't.
For me, if you're a "front-runner" stay home.

Some people just don't like college sports. Ever think of that?

And what makes you think a Thursday night game will draw a big crowd?

It has been that way for as long as I have been going to games, but yet these same people wonder why we can't land really good players and win lots of games. Then these same people feel entitled to complain it. Who needs enemies?

How bout this one? It's 10 times better watching it on HD at home.

Regarding attendance, to get the good crowds, you need the fair weather fans. To get the fair weather fans, you need to be good, not lose games to unc and osu.

It's a combination of a million things. Does a 5-0 pitt team add butts in seats last night and by how much? I do like the op though. Good solid list

Well, I cant go to GT because of my kid's game. Unbelievably, I was able to get $50/ticket on Stubhub. I have really good seats but I was expecting $20 or $25.

I was able to sell mine but the issue always is there aren't enough people in Western PA who are willing to spend money or drive into Pittsburgh to use a free ticket given to them. Simply not a big enough fanbase.

Night games are great for me though as kid's sporting events are over by then.

I understand that not everyone likes college sports, but if you went to the Pitt - penn state game, doesn't that indicate that you are a college sports fan? Also, if both of those teams come into the game at 5-2, there will be 55,000 people there because it will be an "event" and if there is one thing that people in Pittsburgh like, it's an event.

I agree that it is better watching it on TV but there is nothing like being in the stadium for big game that watching it from home on the HD TV can not offer.
Also, losing to Oklahoma State and North Carolina on the road is nothing to hang your head over. By the end of the year, they will both be ranked in the Top 20 and Pitt was in it until the very end of both games. No loses are good, but if there was "good loses", these would be two of them.

I've been to my fair share of big games. It's amazing how much you miss being there vs watching it on tv.
Watching football on TV is nice since you see everything and you get the commentary from the announcers.
But look at what you're missing by not being at the game:
1. You get to sit next to people that haven't taken a shower or brushed their teeth for a few days
2. LIsten to an in stadium announcer that's says the ball is somewhere near the 22 yard line????
3. The sticks show 3rd and 7 and the in stadium announcer announces 3rd and 3
4. You learn from your fellow seat mates how to structure many different sentences that start with You Su-k or What the fu-k ???
5. Miss the smell of fried food from the concession areas
6. You get to watch the visiting fans out yell the PITT fans
7. Best yet you get second by second game commentary from the guy that sits behind you

etc.

So you want a medal for being a fan or what?

My wife and I had a wedding at 4:30, left reception after the Bridal toast, and first dance at 6:15, 40 miles away, made it to seats just missing the kickoff only... Come on people... make Pitt Football a priority... It was kinda cool that My wife went along with it... especially going 90 on the highway as we were changing clothes in the car... LOL.. My two sons were already at the game, since they drove seperately.. So this was not good parental role-model thing to do... Speeding, I mean.... but going to the wedding and the game, set a precedent for the kids to understand the importance of Pitt football....
Would like to hear the stories from those that do make Pitt Football a priority, rather than the reasons others dont go...

I died and had to come back to life to attend the game.
Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but near the end of the 4th quarter, I almost died again. That would have made 4 times this year!

What little kids play soccer gains on Saturday night at 7:30pm? Now next week, 12:30, I get it. That's why I like later games, get your crap out of the way and still have time to tailgate
travel teams have games out of the area. High school kids play. We aren't PSU-kids are more important than football.

We're 300 + miles away from Heinz field and make every home game!
For the noon, 12:30 and 1 pm games:
1. Up at 3 am
2. Taxi out of the driveway onto the runway at 3:30 am
3. Wheels up at 3:31
4. Cruising speed on the PA Turnpike 80 mph ( new speed limit is 70 mph for most of the turnpike)
5. We've met some wonderful PA State Police officers prior to the 70 limit which increased the cost of the game day experience. Cost of doing business! Cruise on!
6. Get stuck at the Squirrel Hill tunnel or bridge rebuilding in the Pittsburgh area
7. Touchdown around 8:30
8. Taxi to the hotel parking lot
9. Try to check in early and get a room
10. If not change and freshen up in the hotel bathroom
11. Hit the regular bar, tailgate, game, bar, sleep
12. Sunday reverse the travel part of the adventure
13. Sunday afternoon watch the Steelers and collapse!

We claim attendance and recruiting do not matter, so why do we talk about them so often?

You'd be surprised. but the point is, people have kids with other obligations. Granted, the the other excuses are lame and who cares about the weather, just go if you can. It sucks but that's the way it is. I have DirectTV, or WatchESPN is your friend in these cases. I got season tickets, i'm going to the home games, but if I can't for whatever reason, ticket to Pitt fans only

From my perspective, the only Pitt fans that matter were the ones in the house for the game. Although it kills the atmosphere having so many empty seats, I enjoy lightly attended games as there are no security lines, no lines for drinks in the Club, no waiting for an open urinal, etc. People are going to do what they want on game days....at least this season Pitt sold the seats and has the revenue in the bank! Hail to Pitt!

The great majority of the reasons listed above would've also been valid the day of the Nit game, yet they didn't miss that game, did they?

Eh. So have I. I can't say I miss it at all. I also generally hate people though, so that probably matters a lot.

No joke this is what we do for every home game every year!
We're PITT fans!
Go PITT!

So, we are only allowed to discuss Pitt football if we attend the games, I do of course , just wanted to know the douchebag rules. Also, can we discuss only good things about Pitt if we don't attend games , we need a president of this douchebag club! Where's Douchebagstache

Then they should say so, instead of making other lame excuses. Did their dog eat their map to Heinz Field, too?
I agree, why lie. I don't care about Marshall, so I stayed home to watch it. I'm ok saying it. People need to worry about themselves more and less about others.

I didn't attend because i didn't want to.

Enjoyed the day spent with my 4 year old son and wife.

Then you are part of the problem, not solution. Add besides, you'll have plenty of time with the fam as your place of employment may not be financially stable to support you very long.

I don't care about being the solution.
If my donations and season ticket support the last 14 years aren't enough...I'm not concerned.

You're a weird guy. Pharmacist don't have employment issues.

I went to the Marshall game, cause my son wanted to, I would have preferred to watch it on tv, the dumbass's couldn't even get the fireworks show correct, couldn't even watch them from inside the stadium

my good friend bobby heenan once said the scariest thing about wrestling fans is that they can vote and they can breed. Beginning to think this can also be said about Pitt's supposed fans.

That's idiotic. You are talking about 6 weekends at 5 hours each. Carpool the kids, send the spouse and take a buddy. This sh!t isn't difficult to navigate and has nothing to do with being selfish.

Yeah, sorry little Johnny/Little Mary, your Dad cares about himself, go find your own ride to your soccer game...

So you want a medal for being a fan or what?
What do I need a medal for? All I did was list the excuses that I heard from people who didn't attend the game last night. A little sensitive aren't we? Did I say something that offended you? Oh wait, I forgot it's 2016 and everyone is offended by everything that any one says.
People need to show up and support the program. It's not that hard.
