Here are some of the excuses I've heard from people about why they were NOT...

no, I've endured a youth soccer game in my time, no one actually prefers this over a college football game. It's done out of guilt, some sort of parental obligation, never out of preference.

No, I really, truly PREFER it. In a few years my daughter will be out of school and I won't have her games to go to anymore, I'm really going to miss it badly.

But I still never miss a Pitt game, I always at least DVR it and watch it later. And where I live nobody cares about Pitt so it's easy to avoid the score.

LOL, I know pitt79, I am just kidding around. My little ones will be getting into it soon, absolutely looking forward to it. Any parent would rather watch their kids over other people's kids, aka pitt football.

That's why I am such a big proponent of later games, or a vocal hater of noon kickoff times.

I agree, and I know people who never see their kids play sports, and they miss it all for things like Pitt games or golf! I went to a Pitt game one time when my daughter was playing soccer, she was 10 years old and she scored 3 goals that game. I regretted that and never missed any games since, except once when I had surgery.

sorry, coached my share of t-ball & i-ball. It's like watching paint dry. There are 6 or 7 Pitt games a year at home and I don't miss them.

Guess there isn't much youth soccer or baseball in Columbus since not many there seem to miss home games.

Nominate yourself for parent of the year.

Kids are fine, sat through plenty of tournament games for entire weekends in the heat of July. Thoroughly enjoyed it. t-ball, not so much. But once again there are only 6 or 7 home games; my family is always there and attend with me when possible.

You are either a fan or a message board whiner. I think we know which category you are.

hey, you don't like your kids, dont' backtrack now. If we didn't have parents like you, the porn industry wouldn't exist..

Never said that Johnny, you don't like going to Pitt games and this is a Pitt forum. Plenty of soccer mommy blogs for you to post on and compare notes. You might be more useful there.

Everybody here LIKES going to Pitt games, but not everyone feels obligated to go to every one.

How many Pitt games did you miss back then? How many of your kids events did you miss for Pitt games?

Missed a few fall baseball games but considering I was there for every tournament in July, think it kind of evens out. As I told swervin, you would be much more useful posting notes on a soccer mommy blog.

I am as big a Pitt fan as there is but my kids' games win out 9 times out of 10. Luckily, there have not been many conflicts but the only way I can pick a Pitt home game over my kids' games is if it is an "event" Pitt game going up against an ordinary youth game meaning its not like a game against the best team in the league or playoff game or something like that.

I know this will be ridiculed because there aren't many free thinkers here but I think Pitt is losing the "old guy" crowd. These are the guys that literally have nothing better to do but watch football and find ways to get out of the house.

Let me explain. Heinz wasn't designed to worry about aging people that can't get around too well. The Steelers know they don't need them. Parking and getting to the stadium is difficult for a lot of people. It's not like colleges that run shuttle busses from remote parking lots right up to the door and restrict access to the area directly around the stadium. Heinz has a major interstate empty right next to one of the gates and couldn't possibly limit access safely in a way that makes sense, making such a scheme nearly impossible. Couple that with a lack of close, affordable parking, and it's suddenly not doable for the old guy unless he is part of a contingent that can help him or he can donate enough money to park close and get VIP access to his seats.

Most of the other challenges are similar to other college stadiums so far as hiking up ramps and climbing steps to your seat. None of that is too terrible but parking and getting to the stadium is a gigantic problem for that demographic.

FYI: I realize this demographic might only account for 5k butts in seats but when you're struggling to cover ugly yellow seats with butts, it's kind of worth noting.

I'm a middle aged guy, 45, and until they lower me in to the ground , or I can't walk at all, my son will carry me then for a few years, I will make it to my seats.

We all know kids come first, can't believe that has to be said, we are one F'ed up fan base

Maybe I do, I admit Pitt sports are a secondary concern, far behind my child. But I like Pitt football too, just when I can fit it in behind the real priorities.

Well, I'm a terrible, low life fan because I stayed home and skipped the 100 mile drive so my daughter could go to one of her best friend's birthday parties. She's eight and I'm almost 48. I'll live.

If that's wrong then banish me now. I really don't want to be part of any group that looks down on that decision.

Coming from a guy who coaches 2 youth basketball teams and with multiple kids who play higher level youth sports (including soccer)- it's 6 games a year. You are taking nothing away from your kids by missing a couple of their games to attend a sporting event. My point was- it's not difficult for people to attend games if they want.

Did you ever think that a person might PREFER to watch their own kid play soccer over a Pitt football game?

I fully agree with you, I drive 289 miles one way to attend the games each week, I'm closer to VT than Pitt campus. If the kids schedule conflicts, and I can't arrange something, kids come first, and no doubt about that. Thankfully only happened a handful of times in 22 years lol

I don't think I could disagree anymore. Heinz field is perfect for the aging fan, perfectly suited for that demographic. think about the old yinzer and his priority. Need to be close to at least 2 major highways so they can be home 20 minutes after they leave stadium. Check. Need ample parking space right next to stadium to avoid walking. Check. Need the chairs with the backs because God forbid they have to sit on bleacher style bench. Check. Need 7,000 restrooms because you need to take 7 leaks in a 3 hour window. Check..

I would rather be 90, walk up that hill in Oakland, and enjoy a full day on campus, then to feel like the Jr STILLERS, but that's just my preference.

That's the point, I don't want to, I'd rather watch my daughter play soccer, it's only a few more years, then she'll be grown and not playing anymore, unless she plays in college, which I guess there is an outside chance of that, at which point, I'd try to go to as many of those games as I could... on the other hand, Pitt games will likely never stop being held during my lifetime, so there's time to do that later.

That's just it, nobody should be ridiculed for what's priorities and the order of them. We all think differently. Some in my family wouldn't miss a church dinner over a game, not me, hell no, but then I'm told I'm going to hell in a basket, so.......lol

so would I but you and I are the exception. Think about these on campus stadium threads. The biggest complaint from the aging demographic is GASP parking.. I mean could you imagine the horror of having to walk a bit to the stadium? Secondly is GASP, not enough major roadways with access to/from any proposed stadium site in Oakland. Could you imagine not being able to be home, watching Wheel of Fortune, 15 minutes after leaving the stadium? It would be horrible..

I see the points from the other side as well, and yes, we are exception these days , but people have got very soft, fat, facts back that up, and lazy with each generation

And the truth is, I don't miss any games, unless It's not on TV and I'm not available to watch online. For several years I've been DVRing the noon games to attend to other priorities. Almost every game is on TV.

I guarantee not one person on the OSU, PSU, or Alabama boards feel this way, and if they did would most likely be ridiculed. Yet people here whine and cry that we can't win or recruit like these programs. You want to half-ass support a program, expect half-ass results.

We're not on the OSU, PSU, or Alabama boards, and if it takes ignoring everything else in your life to win, then I'd rather not win. On the other hand, I don't buy it, I'm sure those schools have many fans who think just like me and put their family and kids above a football program.

at the Marshall - Pitt game yesterday...
- Their child had a soccer game
- It was raining
- It was a night game
- The team is not playing well
- The team they are playing is not any good
- Narduzzi not giving the "younger" players a chance
- Peterman sucks
- The students don't go to the games, why should I
- There is no game day atmosphere
- Their defense is horrible
- It costs too much money to park at the games
- The cost of food is too expensive and it doesn't taste very good
- I had to work
- The cost of beer is too expensive
- I live to far away from the game, it takes me over an hour to get to the game
- The people in front of me stand up at times and I can't see the game
- I'm tired of having fans from the opposing team sitting in my section
- Pittsburgh has a lot of sports teams, why spend my money on watching an average college football team
- If Pitt would have beat either Oklahoma State or North Carolina, I'd be there because they be ranked higher
- The traffic going to and from the game is bad
I know that people in Pittsburgh like to think that they are great sports fans, but the reality of it is, they are not. They are quite simply "front-runners". They want to be part of the "excitement" that is going on for a given game. That is why so many people attended the penn state game and so few attended the Marshall game. The next big crowd will be at the Virginia Tech game IF both teams enter the game with at least a 5-2 record.
For me, the only real excuse listed is having to work, the others are a "choice" that we all have to make.
Those who are the "real" fans of the Pitt football team attend games despite all of the above, those who are the "front-runner" fans don't.
For me, if you're a "front-runner" stay home.

Sorry, but watching my own children is a bit more important to me than watching someone else's.

What do you mean? Dude, I drive 4.5 hours each way to go to the games, missed maybe 5 in 20 years, you are talking to the wrong guy

I'm a little better than a casual fan, I watch every game, go to one or two every year, and it's just one interest among others. No, I'm never going to be the hard core fan who drives all night to get to every game and donates thousands of dollars, so what? They need me too, if you took away everyone that thinks like me every Saturday, you might have 10,000 people in Heinz Field.

sorry, addressing it to those who feel it is better to attend each and every child event rather than the 6 or 7 home games a year.

Children grow up, and when it's over and they are adults, you can't relive that stuff, Pitt games will always be there.

Agree, takes all types, I guess when I get overly excited or pissed during games, I see my whole experience , and how great we were at one time. I got to experience TD, MARINO in person, that makes things stronger in some cases as importance. I told a friend who post on this board yesterday, If I didn't go to Pitt, didn't get to see great teams as I did as a kid, there wouldn't be a reason to even follow them, sad but true. So it takes all kinds

your kids only do fall activities? There is nothing of theirs to attend in the winter or summer? Band concerts, cheer-leading, basketball?

I saw all those games too! I remember the 1976 Championship, etc. To some people, they see how much I put into and they think I'm a rabid, hard core fan! The people that are super fans and never miss a game in person, are the exception, not the rule.

My daughter does soccer all year round the last few years and also does ballet dancing, I go to everything. Is it so hard for you to understand that I do it because I want to? I figure there are between 2-3 years left of this and then she'll probably need to shift priorities, so I might as well enjoy it while it's still on. Pitt will be there later, this won't.
