I have a great deal of respect for Pitt

You win games and bring fans.
Have you seen the Non Con schedules of most P5 teams? It's sad, but they all do it. So should Pitt. I'd schedule 1 of the "big 3" if they would (PSU, WVU, ND) and no more, then it's mary, peter and paul u the rest of the way

I get that Pitt teams have been mediocre for so long that one solution is just to create an easier schedule. It might help increase the number of wins but it’s not going to fool fans into thinking Pitt has a better team. It’s just going to further support the notion that the administration can’t hire a coach who knows how to recruit well and win consistently at Pitt.

Creating that easier schedule is a lot more likely than finding that elusive, probably non existent, mythical coach/magician who could recruit well, win consistently and be satisfied to stick around for fifty years at Pitt who some are convinced is out there if only a chance a competent administration was in place.

Or stay put and figure out a way to compete in the ACC coastal, which isnt a very good division and shouldn’t be all that hard to win, or at least contend for a title

Sorry... I just don’t see it that way, if those games being won are the ones against weak teams that I have no desire to watch.

Take a look at this article. Alabama students (who have always showen up for every game) made a statement by blowing off the last game against very weak opponent - leaving tons of empty seats. Saban made a remark about it to the media. He was Pissed. But my very point was made by these students: nobody cares to go watch a game against a lame opponent. Even the person who wrote the piece ended it by suggesting that if Saban wants the students to show up, then he shouldn’t quick scheduling such weak opponents.

Pitt needs to be competitive against top 20 opponents (and win at least one or two a year), win mostly against solid opponents and beat weak opponents handily.
That isn't true. I go to most Alabama home games and have season tickets. The stadium upper decks were 1/2 to 1/4 full, as well. Tickets to most Alabama games are easy to get for face value. As more and more students come from out of state and the school stupidly removed student organization seating, they have lost the atmosphere they crave for non top 10 matchups.

The situations are patently different. Alabama fans are apathetic for the crap opponents because Alabama beats the crap out of them. Pitt would be in a battle against ULL. It has been proven time and time again Pitt fans are not going to come out unless Pitt is winning and competing for something. Pitt has top start by pulling up wins. Pitt fans don't care about P5 opponents or top 25 opponents. They don't put butts in seats and they are much harder to beat and build a program on.
