If we just beat UVa, GT, ND, NC St, we would be in

Win 4 next week and they still can. Never say die.
There's a 0% chance of that happening unless they manage to avoid both Louisville and Duke.

The team that showed up today could have easily handled every other crappy team on the list above and been playing for seeding next week instead of needing a miracle to extend their season. It's mind boggling.

Uh, you see a difference between needing to beat the top 4 teams in the league and middle or worse of the conference (among whom we now sit thanks to 2 four game losing streaks largely against those teams)?

I see rationalization that is completely unwarranted. You don't lose to four lousy teams by accident. And three of them will finish with as many or more ACC wins as us. Why? Because we're also a lousy team.

We're a lousy team for the last month with players that have clearly shown the ability to be better than lousy.

I'm not excited about how this season played out at all, but I don't think your analogy makes much sense.

Out of those 4 losses, definitely win 2-3 and maybe have beat either Clemson or Louisville and it’d be close. Coulda, shoulda, woulda.

It wasn't an analogy; it was a dig at how silly this thread is. Sure, if we would have increased our win total by nearly 25% we might have made the tournament. But if we're saying we needed to win this game AND this game AND that game AND that game, well, we really weren't very close at all.

The blindspot here is that if were actually a good, tournament-worthy team we wouldn't have lost against these ass teams. One or two, maybe. But we kind of proved exactly who we are when you look at our Q1 record and our ACC record. These teams are our tier.

Despite the fact that we expected to be better, these types of games stop being upsets at some point. You can tell that some of our fans are having trouble with acceptance. They think we are a tournament team gone wrong. No, we are not a tournament team.

Still not enough to get us an NIT bid

If UNC makes the NCAA Tournament, then Pitt would get an auto bid to the NIT as the 2nd highest NET team from the ACC. However, even if UNC doesn't go, we would absolutely, 1 million percent be offered an NIT bid. And we will absolutely 1 million percent turn it down since most of our players will either be in the portal or seniors who just want to be done.

If Lowe decides he wants to come back then I'd enter the NIT.

We can agree to disagree about getting a bid to the NIT. Maybe if we get to the ACCT final game, then, yes

What are you not understanding?

If UNC makes the tournament, we get an AUTOMATIC bid. It's AUTOMATIC. They changed the rules.

Also, even if UNC doesn't make the tournament and they and SMU take the ACC NIT auto bids, we will still make it without any doubt whatsoever since the B12, BE, and B10 schools don't play in the NIT anymore and there's no SEC schools going since 14/16 are going to the NCAA Tournament.

Tell you what: if Pitt beats ND and UNC and all of the other predictions you make come true (SMU and UNC get NIT bids and Pitt somehow gets one) I will start a thread on this board saying that SMF is a basketball god and we need to believe EVERYTHING he says. Promise. I ask for nothing, in return

Truth be told, I don't see us beating ND, but I'll be watching @ 11:30 am where I live ...

I dont get it. Do you not believe me that Pitt gets an auto bid if UNC makes the NCAAT?

Also, try this out. Pick 32 teams who don't make the NCAA Tournament but are NOT from the BE, B10, B12, or SEC. Pitt would very easily be one of those 32 even without some teams turning it down. There is a 100% chance that Pitt is invited to the NIT this year, considering the B12, B10, B12, and SEC aren't going and some other teams will turn it down. I would suspect they'd even be a relatively good seed. They may be the only major D1 team in it, which is one of the reasons they'd turn it down.

Yeah this is pretty simple. Winning overall record, NIT. Could win a few games.

I see no reason to play in the ncaa tournament unless you have a team that can make noise, like we had last year.

If we turn down a bid to the NIT, Greene, Capel and Capel’s entire staff should be let go within the hour. Also, let any player who voted to turn down the bid walk and tear up his NIL deal. Turning down a bid to any tournament this year would be embarrassing at best and risk our future in any P4 conference at worst. No major conference would want a bunch of overpaid crybabies.

After we beat Notre Dame we will beat North Carolina. Then on Thursday we will beat Wake.

Then on Friday Duke runs us out of the gym.

(Note, these are not actual predictions, just showing what our path to the finals would be.)
So you’re saying we don’t need to beat both Ville and Duke. Great, our chances are a little better than 0%.

And if someone else knocks off Duke before the finals, our chances skyrocket!!

Why on earth do you think our future as a high major athletic department is at risk if the basketball team doesn't play some exhibition games?

I have to say, I am with SMF on this one. Even if we lose on Tuesday we would almost certainly get an NIT berth if we want one. I just can't imagine us wanting one.

With all the Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 teams playing in the tournament in Vegas, the NIT is going to be desperate to get as many ACC and SEC teams in their event as they can.

No, we would play Duke in the semis. If we would beat them then we would play (barring upsets) either Louisville or Clemson in the championship game. If the seeds hold (and of course they won't) there is no way to avoid having to beat both number one and number two to win the championship if you are a lower seeded team.

Change "almost certainly" to "certainly." NO POWER 5 SCHOOLS ARE GOING. The NIT would probably guarantee us 3 home games if we agreed to enter.

Do you think the NIT would pay Pitt to play in their tournament just to spice up the pot?

They do pay the schools some (small) amount of money for each game they play (plus they cover expenses, so no one actually loses any money). I do not know if they have any plans to change the amounts they pay out this year to deal with the fallout of the Vegas tournament.

I do wonder if part of the arrangement they made with the P5, where they guaranteed them home games, if they guarantee that the school not lose money by hosting.

Schools don't lose money by hosting, and they don't lose money by traveling. The NCAA covers schools expenses, so the road teams don't pay for that. And the NCAA gives every team that plays some small amount of money for each game that they play. In other words, every team that makes the NIT should make a little bit of money.

But just a little bit. Certainly not enough to matter in the grand scheme of things.

Well, yea, the money they make would be insignificant but it's good that schools don't lose money for participating like they do in the for-profit CBI.

NIL comes with a floating rate of pay to the players. So similarly, is Pitt's "Name" "Image" and "Likeness" worth a few extra $$ to the NIT to get them to play in their tournament?

FWIW, I haven't missed a single Pitt BB game this season. Watched them all; even those on ACC Network Extra, ESPN+, and ESPN News. If Pitt makes the NIT and/or chooses to play in it I will certainly watch those, too. I just have doubts that they would play in it given the fact they turned down a #1 seed in the tournament last year ... but allow me to be surprised

Yeah, that's (one of) the reason that power conference schools don't participate in the CBI any more. There is a decent chance that their participation will cost them money, and no one is willing to pay for that.

Every time in school history that Pitt has hosted an NIT game I have been in attendance. I would imagine that that would not change if we decide to play and end up hosting games this year. Because I am a sucker for Pitt basketball.

For the record, there have been six Pitt home NIT games.

1984 - Notre Dame (loss)
1992 - Florida (loss)
1997 - New Orleans (win)
2001 - St. Bonaventure (win)
2001 - Mississippi State (loss)
2015 - George Washington (loss)

The actual NIL for college basketball players is worth very close to $0. They are paid "to play." So, no, there is no "extra" NIL payments to play in the NIT. Now, if a donors stepped up and told the team he'd pay them $10K each to pay or something like that, then maybe they would. But why would anyone do that?

I've been to the last four. My vague memories:

New Orleans had a very good player, and I want to say he was #33.

St. Boneventure's best player was a guard who was about 4'8".

Okay, I don't recall much from the Mississippi State game other than getting lost in Mt. Washington with some friends afterwards.

Because the Birmingham Bridge was under construction, I got to the GW game damn near halftime; I wish I hadn't gotten there at all. Never seen a team exert less effort in my life, and that's why I never want Pitt to play in another NIT.

I think the 106-51 home loss to Louisville in the first year of the Stallings Error was probably worse.
