Jeffress vs Morton

Pretty tough weekend for the WPIAL. Butler barely survives District 3's #5 seed Central Dauphin in overtime (survive and advance), Mars (without Carmody) loses to D3's #7 seed Elizabethtown, and Laurel Highlands loses to D3's #9 seed York Suburban.

In 5A, all five WPIAL teams lost, though Penn Hills lost to a city league school. In 6A, three of five teams - Butler, Upper St. Clair, and Mt. Lebanon - advanced. Butler and USC play each other next.

Mt. Lebanon and Cheltenham being 5 hours away from each other seems like an awful lot for a 2nd Round game.

In fairness, Mt. Lebo did beat Cedar Crest in the first round at a game played at Peters Township. At least this one splits the difference and is being played in Chambersburg.

First round games are played in the district of the higher seeded team. After that sites are supposed to be as close to half way between the schools as they can get them. Chambersburg gets a lot of play in a bunch of different sports because they can put a game with a Western PA team against a Philly or Philly suburb team there and it's close to in the middle.

I hear you. Chambersburg has a pretty nice facility, too; it's not as well-equipped as the dome at Cumberland Valley or the Geigle Complex in Reading - those venues are probably nicer than a lot of low-major D1 schools - but it's one of the nicer ones in D3 for these far flung east/west neutral site games.

Mt. Lebanon/Cheltenham is one of the most interesting 2nd Round games simply because you have a team that is right outside the Pittsburgh city limits vs a team right outside the Philadelphia city limits in such an early round. Both school districts are similar too in terms of demographics.

There is a reason for that. There are more big schools in the east so fully three quarters of the AAAAAA field is from the east so these things are going to happen. Perfect example was the McDowell- Cental York game I attended last night. Each team traveled at least 3 hours to get to Ebensburg because they were in the same mini bracket.

The same thing happens in the opposite way in class A because more of the little schools are in the west.

How'd Jeffress look?

His scoring ability hasn’t popped (yet) but the rest of his game is coming along nicely. His game was tailor made for the B10 and Painter specifically. Good to see a local kid shining at that level
Morton is playing well. He’s the perfect glue guy. High basketball IQ and team player. He’s getting about 25 minutes per game on a Top 20 team.

Another miss by Capel
I don’t think this one is entirely on him. I believe Morton was B10 bound one way or another, either Purdue or Indiana if Archie was in better shape there. Capel was playing catch up from day 1 so I wouldn’t really call it a miss.

Going to Purdue was probably the best thing for him as it’s taken him a bit to acclimate and he’s been able to do so without the pressure of being a local kid tasked with being the face of the program.
