Loaded Capel Tweet

I do find it funny that we’re classifying these people as “losers”. 1 is going to the nba, 2 is going to win a ton of games at Arkansas and 3 is going to win a ton of games at Indiana. Meanwhile Pitt has its worst team since the 0-18 team.

with all 3 of those guys back they win a ton of games this year and possibly win 10 ACC games and fight for a tourney spot.
I like Champagnie. Johnson, Toney, and McGowens are utter trash. 3 of the lowest character guys we've had at Pitt. I'll take Hugley stealing cars every day over the on court, locker room, and bedroom shenanigans of those 3 morons.

the dumbest thing about this quote is that he built the shack he tore down

should read.

"i started a dumpster fire 3 years ago, i let it smolder undetected, last year it exploded and burnt the city to the ground..i just got a solid 2022..so ignore the stink and ash..i shall puff out my chest"
I would feel a lot differently about Capel’s construction work to date-including the dismal W/L—if he wasn’t pouring an entirely new foundation for his house in year 4.

This was going to be a total rebuild job for him no matter what. But rebuilding was supposed to be what he was doing the past 3 years. Now he’s starting all over again. Not encouraging.

That is all true and those guys were losers but the coach is responsible for the roster.
No doubt, but unfortunately he tied his fate to the wrong group of guys . I really think that the experience he’s gained while here should be valuable going forward . Knowing who to put your effort into and looking more deeply at the character issues is a must in future recruiting . Beggars can’t be choosy, but as his roster improves he can be more selective on who to recruit and when a player won’t conform to his style of play or on/off court conduct the bench awaits
him .

He didn't deserve a fair shake. He was a stagnant HC who was going to be fired from a worse program. Fans were outraged before he was even announced because it was obvious he was such a poor choice.

Regardless of what the media or fans thought of the guy, he was still an experienced P5 HC and could've fought through the adversity if it was meant to be. He bombed with a bubble team in Year 1 and recruited the island of misfit toys for Year 2. It should have been clear to anyone by January 2017 that he was going to be a complete failure here.

Plenty of fans didn't agree with the Dixon hire at the time, but he still went out and won and earned the trust of his doubters. Signing Carr was probably the single impressive thing he did in his tenure here.

Come on man. What's the old saying? When the going get tough, the tough, ah, sleep through two years until they get fired and can collect a big buyout?

Or something like that.

Tbh, there was very little difference in Stallings last 5 years at Vandy & Dixon's last 5 at Pitt. I think each coach had maybe one NCAA tourney win in that time frame. Both coaches had become stagnant and it seemed neither school wanted to wield the axe, but were more than willing to give them a push out the door.

Let's pretend that were true. Why drive Dixon out to replace him with another stagnant coach? It makes no sense.

Barnes: "Our program has been stagnant for five years. It is time to shake things up! Why not hire another worse, stagnant coach? I heard he's about to be fired, so I'm sure he'll be interested!"

Especially when Purdue wanted rid of Matt Painter and he wanted to come to Pitt at the time…

The only way Painter would have come to Pitt is if he was fired by Purdue. We were never going to hire him away. They are a notch above us on the food chain.
I thought the rumor at the time was he had gone tired there (they were kind of in a lull at the time), and he was shopping with us. Could be wrong but I thought Thats what I heard at the time.

either way even BK would’ve been better than stallings

One guys sleeping with a teammates girl and threatening to leave the other two were selfish players with one quitting on the team during the season and the other was pouting the last half yr he was here .

I hate to tell you this , but when your a college student you bring character with you from your upbringing a coach doesn’t instantly instill character.
A coach shouldn’t be recruiting character?

No but I think they have an easier path to an elite season being in the ACC coastal and basically just needing one year of an elite QB.
There’s a lot more missing than a top line QB, which Pickett has not been to this point and is highly unlikely to become in his 5th year. He is what he is. The defense lost its best players and there is promise in their replacements but there’s inexperience and they’re bound to have some growing pains. Everyone is assuming we are set at WR, RB and TE. Other than Addison at one spot all are open questions. What about our kicking game? Totally unproven. Then there’s the O line. Downright bad last year, very iffy going into this year.

Lastly, there’s the coaching. Other than Bates, there’s not a lot to inspire confidence in the guys calling the shots on Saturdays either.

Sorry to take you to task on this but I don’t understand the notion that we’re just a stud QB away from a great year.

so this was just a 3.5 year growth process fot jeff??

wait what???? didnt we hire him because of his "experience"?

I don't think for a second that Stallings was Plan A or even Plan B. But I think it was obvious to anyone that followed Pitt basketball that program was stagnant, there wasn't a lot of talent in the pipeline and that 2017-18 was going to be drop-off without some unforeseen heroics on the recruiting trail. I think the goal was to break with Jamie without anything getting messy & without the program cratering on his watch. I think some of the motivation to preserve his legacy, tbh. TCU was the perfect landing spot for Dixon.

And if you want to talk about someone that seemed resigned to a fate, I think Jamie seemed to be resigned to idea that his best days at Pitt were in the rear view mirror and that the ACC wasn't a good fit for Pitt.

A chip on the shoulder is good, but that’s a really dumb thing to put out in public. If you want to say stuff like that internally to motivate the guys, that’s one thing but putting that out publicly just creates more problems. He’s in year 4, looking at a 2nd rebuild, and has zero postseason appearances. Again, a chip on the shoulder is good, but it helps when you have the resume to back it up and he doesn’t have that yet from his time here.
Right. He can't coach, he can't recruit and his teams collapse and are dysfunctional and players can't wait to get the hell out of the program every season he's been here just about. I guess the only thing he has left is to try and act cocky and arrogant on twitter because he sure as hell has shown nothing at Pitt going on 4 seasons.

20 or so. Champagnie was the runner up for the ACC player of the year. Do you really think that’s not elite?

I personally wouldn’t put the “elite” tag on Champagnie, but there’s no debating that he was an excellent, excellent player.

The common refrain I’ve heard from other Pitt guys I talk with is that “They just need one or two studs and it can change everything” but we had one in Champagnie along with guys like XJ/Toney who, if nothing else, were great supporting players. The idea that Capel pulling a few 5 star/high 4 star rabbits from his hat and flipping the script just doesn’t carry water with me. These things have to be built from the ground up and I have yet to see that we’re intent on doing that.

I don’t think you “took me to task”. We just have a difference of opinion. My general point is that an elite QB can win you a lot of games very quickly whereas one player is not going to do that in basketball despite what we’ve been told. Obviously there are other factors.

If Ben Simmons, Anthony Edwards and Markelle Fultz (yes I know he sucks now but he was good enough to be a #1 pick) weren’t enough to overcome bad coaching and average teammates to even make a tournament of 68 one player isn’t going to make a difference at Pitt. I just think the notion of landing one elite player solves our problem and makes our season special isn’t going to be in the cards.

We are allowed to have different opinions, still, I believe.

4.6 million for a football coach to win 7 games. Gotta love it

That's another head scratcher. How can anyone pay a football coach that kind of obscene money to win 6 - 7 games every single year????? For that kind of money, I'd expect at least 10 wins every year. Maybe an off year every 5 or so, but 9 - 11 wins annually goes with $4.6mil.

Maybe not every year 10 wins, but how about ONCE? It’s like overpaying for coach C with the extension… who’s hiring these guys away?

I think the one stud player can make all the difference in basketball IF he joins a team that is otherwise solid but lacking star power in a key role. See Duane Wade at MU for example. No different in football with a QB. See Wisconsin with Russell Wilson.

If the team is otherwise dysfunctional and/ or lacking legit P6 players, then you get what Pitt was. I would add that the best 3 players on that team, including Champ, all seemed selfish and focused on padding their stat sheets. That typically doesn’t work well in the W/L column. And that’s squarely on JC.
