New US soccer thread

So regarding the hat trick above…it was left foot, right foot, and header.

not making this up.

Good news in that it looks like Reyna is only going to be out two weeks or so. If we're lucky he could be ready to play by the international break.

Well there are 16 round of 16 matchups, and of the first eight there are going to be four of them on CBS. One would assume that they are planning to do the same thing in the next cycle of games, so it will be eight out of 16 games. And of course those eight games will be the best eight games, the eight games that most people are interested in. So yeah, if I bought Paramount+ because they were selling it as the place to watch the Champions League games and they ended up putting all the best games in the knockout rounds on free TV I'd be pissed.

I get that you aren't, because you don't pay for Paramount+ (I don't either). But knowing the sorts of things that you complain about I can give a 100% guarantee that if you bought it specifically because they said that was what you had to do to watch the Champions League that you'd be pissed off about it.
But I don't think they ever said that Paramount+ would be the exclusive home for it.

No, they said it would be the home for it except for the final.

There is no one, and I mean literally no one, who thought when they signed the contract that they were going to put weekday afternoon games on over the air television. There was no reason for anyone to think that this season was going to be any different than what they did last season, and that was a perception that CBS was willing to allow people to have so they could sucker some extra people into buying a Paramount+ subscription.

Your going to have link some quotes from CBS because my understanding was that it would be mostly Paramount+ plus some CBSSN games. I didn't expect CBS games until the final but I also didn't think the later knockout rounds would be stream-only.

Leg 1 today, Chelsea at home to Lille. Let's go Lille! Timmy Weah, show London what you're made of!

Hey I’m used to it. Most people I know don’t root for Chelsea. Lol. I’ll be watching!

Following Chelsea is like watching a soap opera. My game day routine usually has me signing on to twitter exactly 60 minutes before kickoff to see who the Chelsea Manager selected for the start 11. I often wonder what it would be like to be a Liverpool fan and essentially know your teams lineup before every game. You know Salah and Mane are playing. At Chelsea, whether it was Frank or now Tuchel, they have no clue who their best 11 are and the team never builds that chemistry from playing together game after game.

haha, sorry for not liking. Looks like Klippity Klopp is making a run at the Pepster for the title. Liverpool is humming right now.

I actually am rooting for Liverpool I think now. No one wants to see a team owned by a country run away with the league every year.

and I heard Pep say he needs over 100 million this summer if City are to compete for the title again.

unbelievable that guy.

At least one person wants to see this team run away with the league every year. Also, one Champions league trophy isn’t too much to ask for.

I'm gonna go with a big prediction. Chelsea shitcan Lukaku and Werner this summer.

Pep is the man. I like Liverpool and Kloppy too. Both are great on the interview.

CP has been really good this second half getting into the open spaces and making runs with the ball. Deserved the goal that he got.
And at the other end Alonso has been dreadful
Welcome to the soccer discussion! I thought Pulisic was just ok in the first half but I didn’t think his movements off the ball were great. He was able to get the ball to his #9 a couple times though and was more decisive in his decision making. That changed a bit in the 2nd half and he appeared to be working a bit harder and was rewarded with the goal.

Haha Ive been following along this thread but finally decided to dip my toes in.
Only caught a little of the first half and then the second. He does better when in transition so he can use his pace with a quick touch. He has shown that he can control the ball and keep possession but still can’t manufacture something out of nowhere.
His best is at transition and that all depends on how the team is playing at that point.
Hopefully Mckennie is okay after hobbling off the Juve game

This is interesting. Yes our team is young, but in the next cycle when the World Cup is here in 4 years, we will likely be older than most of the previous World Cup winners.

What say you @Fk_Pitt ? Puli...should he leave Chelsea? I really think he should. 76 minutes in today and just getting onto the field. I think he should leave the EPL, head on back to Germany and Borussia considering this morning Man City were reported to be the front runners for Haland. Borussia will needs some talent infusion to replace that machine.

Oh wow! And there he is! moments after that dreadful penalty by Jorginho.

Yeah. I said above about a week ago that I think he should leave. I’d rather he play for a Manager like Klopp who would appreciate him and get the best out of him.

I don’t know if it’s Brits in general, or Chelsea fans, or just what you inherently get with social media, but any time Pulisic misses an opportunity and/or doesn’t produce, he gets all kids of hate. The latest was the 2 legs vs Real Madrid. He had become a consistent starter for Tuchel and started the 1st leg, missed a chance and then was benched for the 2nd leg. In his place came Timo Werner who was very good. Then Pulisic came on late, missed a half chance, and then had another that looked like a sitter that he missed. So the outrage was on in full force. But a still photo from after the match showed that the Madrid defender got his foot on the ball at the same time as Christian and that’s why the goal wasn’t scored. It was a champions league saving defensive play for Madrid, otherwise Christian scores there and Chelsea is through to the Semi. Since then Pulisic hasn’t really played until scoring late to win todays game. There are actually Pulisic hate accounts on twitter and I’ve checked in on them just now and they are all quiet. Imagine that.

as a chelsea supporter, I hate watching matches and hoping for attackers not to succeed just so Pulisic can get more opportunities. I like Werner and love any player with the pace that he has. But I find myself pulling against him at times and I hate that. I’d rather Pulisic go somewhere else, and who knows, maybe I will organically start liking that team. I have a feeling life is going to be tough as a chelsea fan in the future anyways.

It's the Brits. On my side there is a vocal minority who HATE Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson. Even though Robinson is English basically, he's a Yank and for that, they both get alot of grief. Now one Yank that is held in high regard is Dempsey even though he chose not to sign and went to Spurs.

I think Werner is a gigantic waste and likewise should go back to the Bundesliga. I think I'd take Puli over him.

Hell if he stays at Chelsea, I'd love to see a loan to my Whites for the season. Imagine him linking up with Mitro? Well I can...I know you don't care.

To me Werner is the reason why Pulisic needs to leave. I listened to a little of the halftime of the Madrid game on Sirius on the way home from work that afternoon. And the two guys were talking about how Werner started on fire at Chelsea and then went basically a season and a half doing almost nothing, but he kept getting chances and that now finally he was starting to come good. And I couldn't help but contrast that to the way that Pulisic gets treated by Tuchel. Werner spends a season and a half sucking ass, and yet he gets chance after chance after chance. Pulisic plays a bad game and he gets benched, sometimes not even coming on as a substitute, until eventually he gets another chance because you eventually can't ignore the poor play of some of the others.

Whether it's because he's the American and not the Germans or what it is, it shows no signs of changing. He's got to get out of there for his own good.

I can’t disagree.

This…in spite of many of his minutes this year playing out of position…like wing back.

Yeah. Dest was rumored to chelsea in the January window, and there was all kinds of “we don’t need another yank crap” on twitter. The funny thing is, I don’t think Dest spent one second of his development in America. He barely speaks the English language. He’s essentially a Euro with an American flag beside his name.

Love this clip. Ben Chillwell has been out with a major injury since November. Since him and Reece James went out, Chelsea has sputtered a bit. But Christian might be taking Chilly on 1v1 when the US plays England in the World Cup.

Wait, why would this Alex guy think that the other guy should retract what he said? Who does Alex think that Pulisic was playing for when he was playing those multiple matches in all those different time zones? He wasn't fatigued due to a long trip to play Arsenal. He was fatigued due to a flight across the ocean to the US, and then a flight into Central America, and then back to the US, and then back to England.

That's absolutely a good reason why, for instance, Pulisic didn't play over the weekend when he was playing with the US on the previous Wednesday night. Almost none of the Americans in Europe played that weekend, and the ones that did came on as substitutes and only played a small portion of the game. On the other hand, it had nothing to do with why Pulisic couldn't get back into the lineup the following weekend or other times since.

For anything other than that first game back it's all just excuses. Tuchel just doesn't want to come out and say that he prefers the other guys over Pulisic, because if he does that then Pulisic is gone for sure.

I’m not defending tuchel because he does give Pulisic the quick hook. But in this instance, when Werner came on as a replacement, he actually did a bang up job of it. So I understand riding the hot hand ever since and staying with Werner. But the issue still remains that Pulisic’s leash is not as long.

funny little nugget from yesterday. I’m all over Chelsea social media throughout the week, but especially after matches. Yesterday Pulisic was getting his love as he should have. But the supporters were getting on some of the other players, including their own Mason Mount. I watch the games just like everyone else. It’s clear to me that these English and world soccer fans are no different than Pittsburghers or anyone else when it comes to sports, in the sense that they will blame players without considering the finer details and nuances. Mount was fine yesterday in actuality. I can see that. But because he didn’t get on the score sheet, people will complain. That said, Kai Havertz is a front 3 player for Chelsea and for whatever reason he is exempt from any criticism. I don’t get it. He actually did nothing positive yesterday and no one says a word.

He's a German!
Yes. But the English, at least some, are critical of Mount when he has a bad game. But I never hear anything from them when it comes to Havertz.

and for the record, I don’t think any of these guys should get the criticism. Havertz has been good. Mount had been good. But these people act like the players shouldn’t make mistakes and/or there isn’t a team on the other side who are also looking to make plays. Case in point, in the League Cup Final, Chelsea absolutely should have won that game in regulation instead of losing with the 11th shooter in penalties. Mason Mount missed two sitters, and he got blasted on social media for it. My point is sometimes players are unlucky and yeah they make mistakes. Against Madrid, Chelsea gave up 5 goals over two legs, they couldn’t stay in the same zip code for whatever reason with Benzema. But all the fans wanted to do is blast Pulisic for missing two sitters (which they weren’t) and Havertz missed a sitter and no one says anything.

That was the thing for me. Chelsea had two sitters in extra time and missed them both (Havertz and Jorginio had one too where he had wide open net to shoot at from about eight feet and somehow put it wide), but all the fans wanted to talk about was Pulisic's misses. One of which, had he scored it, would have been a goal of the season candidate.

Yeah I didn’t mention Jorginho’s because he gets blasted enough.

another thing, I defended Mount on those sitters because he had missed some games prior to and he wasn’t quite back into form yet. But that’s another point. It takes Pulisic forever to play his way back into the starting lineup after missing time but Mount gets slotted into the starting lineup almost immediately.

bottom line is tuchel doesn’t value Pulisic in his system.

right now Pulisic’s value on the market is 49.5 million. Dortmund sold him to Chelsea for 60 million. Chelsea isn’t going to want to take a loss and I don’t see anyone spending 60 million for him. So I don’t see him going anywhere.
