the administration has stepped it up in a way that I never thought I would see. They have invested in coaches in both major sports and now it’s time for the fans to get behind both programs. As Coach Capel said “they will not make excuses”, so the same must go for the fans.

I am all in. Hope everyone else is to. No more excuses for not showing up.

Put up or shut up time for the fans...
Let's see if we respond.
Up to them to put up what? Fans have yet to score one point or design one press or set up one inbounds play in the history of Pitt basketball. Win they come, lose they do not. Same as everywhere.

Wooden was basically the dirtiest recruiter of all-time; I hope we don't have the next John Wooden.
I HOPE WE DO, I'd love Wooden's success, I'd also flaunt it if we used whatever methods he used.

Well not to spit at your thought...but the cart can come before the horse in this case...an intimidating atmosphere does indeed play into an opponent's mindset. Any edge in this new regime's embryonic stage should be welcome. Sometimes that 6th player is not on the bench but rather in the seats.

yes I get it but that is not human nature... the horse is w's...you start out by losing to the likes of Montana and Navy and Penn State by 30 the kids are going to stay home and drink. The "up to" here is on the team and not by the fans as suggested by the poster I was responding to. It is like expecting enthused fans being at Kevin Costner's farm when it was still filled with corn and he has not even met with Darth Vader yet.

No, I disagree we are "same as everywhere".
Other schools support their programs MUCH better than us during losing / mediocre seasons.

Time for our "fans" to put up or shut up.

Agree with the OP. A lot of posters and fans say they want to see the admin step up and then they will. I believe the admin did, and in a lot of sports. The soccer hires, the VB program, MBB hire, extending Narduzzi, going strong for Canada 2 years ago. They are showing they will now invest.

It's time for the fans to donate and support now. Does that mean it translates to winning? That is never guaranteed. But the stronger support on both sides, the better the odds. Especially if you want to compete at the highest levels.

No more excuses, although I'm sure some will have some.

happen to have any examples of 0-19 fan bases with packed houses that did MUCH better?

No, but the Pete was empty on Game 1.
that is why it is "up to" the the team and not the fans...ok, let's put it in terms of what really happened....happen to have any examples of packed house Game 1's where the coach chased away most of his roster and filled it with division 2 level players where everybody, I mean everybody knew going in the team would be horrendous? Not really a point of argument and Capel gets a year grace period at least, but win (at least improve and not actually digress as the season goes on like this year) and fans come.

I showed up for every game this year, as I have for the last 51 years. HAVE YOU?

Even before the hire, and I think before Stallings was fired, I upped my donation for 2018. And I will continue to buy my tickets for both football and hoops. Hell, we even attended 90% of the hoops games this season. I missed as couple after a family death.

First game of the year this year, it would be nice if more than 1000 fans showed up to welcome Coach Capel and let him know we are behind him. Maybe even give him a standing ovation along with AD Lyke. 2 years after the debacle with Barnes and Stallings and things are so much different now with better people in every way.

Yes and No. Initially there should be a grace period and the fans should come out and support. However, the product will dictate the level of support through out the year.

How many of you spend money to have a bad time? When was the last time you went to the movies to be bored and depressed? When was the last time you went to a restaurant because the food was terrible?

If the product is exciting and improves through out the year, the fans will show... If not, the product needs to get better.

I went to every game, EVERY SINGLE ONE, at Fitzgerald Field House between 1987-1991, when I lived in Shadyside. then I moved to Baltimore in 1992 and I've been to 2 games @Georgetown, one @ Consol and one @The Pete since! Maybe I'll go to another one soon! LOL :) I hate to drive more than a half hour straight, especially in the winter! LOL

Some people just don't get it that our fan base sucks compared to most every other p5 program...

This ridiculous pro sports mentality continues to hold us back...

Your fan base is dominated by pro sports fans. You can't get rid of the mentality without moving the campus.

I agree it is shitty... no loyalty, at all. Refuse to support the team in bad seasons.

That's OK, I like to watch Pitt sports, and it's not me hating, it's you! People love pro sports, so what. If Columbus Ohio had had an NFL team for 80 years that won Super Bowls tOSU might be like Pitt. Pro sports is the highest level, And it's too much to expect fans of Super Bowl winners, and Stanley Cup winners to prefer a 3rd rate college team, 5-7 or 8-24? Even if they go 10-3 in football it's totally possible the Steelers will do better and justified that they get way more attention.

It's partially the pro sports oriented fan base but it's also a city that has never really been that into basketball. Or at least hasn't been since the 1950s.

I do think that is changing a bit, slowly, as the universities and tech companies grow and bring in more international and east coast students/employees who like hoops. The good thing for Pitt is they are (usually!) the best basketball team between Cleveland and Philadelphia. Well maybe the Erie Bayhawks but d-league isn't a big draw!

Maybe not THE dirtiest, but absolutely on the short list.
Cars & money , jobs for parents I can’t think of another 100 or so programs who’ve done that . Now Louisville with strippers and hookers deserve a list of their own .
Ps.. A large friend was a highly recruited Fb player , whenever his parents didn’t accompany him on a trip young friendly girls were available ....just the way it is .

I'm not saying they did anything that others don't. I'm saying, and it's been pretty well substantiated, that they did it more and better than just about everyone. Certainly more and better than everyone at the time. The were the gold standard of cheating in the 60s and 70s.
