I don’t back down when reality and truth are on my side.
If in year 2 or 3 capel wins 9 acc games and make the dance we’re going to be thrilled, right?
Taking a bottom of the barrel program and immediately winning is impressive, right?
I give you tcu and Dixon. Our hope is to minimally replicate our “funk” and “slide” as a program under capel.
It’s okay to acknowledge that reality.
Souf, I acknowledge much of what you say is true and freely admit Jamie was by far our best and most successful coach.
Where we obviously disagree is where the program was going if Jamie had stayed. You obviously feel Jamie would be able to replicate his last 5 years had he stayed any longer.
Since Jamie did not stay, all we are left to do is extrapolate what these last two years and beyond might have been like, considering recruiting had slipped.( jamie clearly can still coach)
Apparently, you believe Jamie would have continued to get us to the tournament after Jamel and Young left. I would argue that after those two were gone, which would have been last years team, no coach could have made it a winner. That includes having all of jamie's players prior to Stallings running them off.
It takes several good to elite players to make the tournament out of the ACC. I don't know what players from that team were going to get us to anywhere near a 500 record last season.
Jamie made the NCAA'S 3 of the last 5 years he was here. Prior to that he hadn't missed. That tells me the program was starting to "slip" in his last 5 years. What do you suppose the next 5 might have been like? Even if you did think Jamie's recruiting still was solid, it is hard to defend him in regards to recruiting and fielding a complete team. He had failed to recruit a solid 5, and hadn't had a solid shooting guard since Gibby.
In the end, it is conjecture since Jamie moved on to TCU. So nobody can really be proven right or wrong. That said, I am not a college basketball guru, however, I believe that we are now better off that Capel is here and the last two years are in the rear view mirror. Here's why:
In one short year, I see legitimate ACC guards and a quality small forward. When you can get players like that, you have a chance to be good to even special. Can Capel continue to bring in this level of player? That is the big question, but, at the end I knew Jamie couldn't.
