OT Calling out Steel Curtain

If the Pens win a cup with MAF, there is no doubt Las Vegas and Calgary will both be very happy to trade for him before the expansion draft and no one will have to worry about this.

Best case scenario might be to make a deal to trade MAF to Calgary and agree to leave Hagelin unprotected to Vegas and have them take him, instead of one of the defensemen which will be available. Honestly, if we came out of that with a neutral asset position (giving Vegas whatever we got for MAF, in exchange for them taking Hagelin) I'd be ok. Of course, MAF might be very happy to be the new face of the Vegas franchise and waive his NMC and this is all moot. Vegas gets a very good goaltender and possibly a guy off a deep playoff run and maybe even a 3rd cup. That would be great for them and selling their new team.

90% of this board was calling flower washed up just like 90% of this board was ready to give up on Garrett Cole... As my good man Lee Corso used to say, not so fast my friend..

Tkachuk was in the 2016 draft. The 2017 draft is regarded as the weakest in over a decade, maybe 15 years. Just not a great draft this year.

He was saying that the #6 overall pick that Calgary offered Pittsburgh didn't mean much because that draft was a weak draft...it was 2016. 2016 was a strong draft.

MAF is not going to Vegas. He doesn't want to raise a family in Vegas and Rutherford will help MAF get to where he wants to go....much like Shero did with Staal.

It wouldn't be a "take your chances" leaving Matt Murray unprotected. It would be 100% he is taken by Las Vegas and you get nothing. Jarry isn't even eligible to be picked. One of Murray and Fleury will be traded this off-season either to Las Vegas with an agreement to not pick any other Penguins or to another franchise, leaving the other protected.

I agree that Vegas would pick Murray if they get the chance. But that wasn't what I was responding to. I was responding to the OP who was talking about what the Pens would do if they decide that they want to keep Fleury and one of the other two. If that's what they want to do, they don't have to do anything, because if that's what they want doing nothing will end up leaving them with Fleury and one of the other two, namely Jarry.

On the other hand, the Pens will not trade anyone to Vegas with the understanding the Vegas doesn't pick any Penguins. Because Vegas is required by the rules of the expansion draft to pick one, and only one, player from every team. If the Pens make a trade like that part of the deal would have to include Vegas guaranteeing the Pens that they will use their pick from the Pens to select the agreed upon goalie (or other player), then the Pens would leave that player unprotected so that he could be selected. But that player would have to be on the Pens roster at the time of the draft, not on Vegas' roster.

One other thing to keep in mind, even if the Pens do trade either Fleury or Murray before the expansion draft, they need to either get a goalie back in return or they need to sign a goalie before the deadline to submit your protected list, because every team is required by the rules to expose at least one goalie who is under contract (or is a restricted free agent with a qualifying offer) for the 17-18 season.

Yes, I understand it isn't that Vegas wouldn't not pick anyone, but that the Pens could pick who that was and they would be largely inconsequential and in fact, Vegas could trade them right back if they wanted.

I'm aware of the rules about the goalies and neither of those things is hard to accomplish, if that is what they want to do.
