0-0 end of the 1st period ...... Caps totally outplayed the Pens in the 1st period ..... Fleury again played great with save after save and is the reason the Caps aren't ahead so far..... Pens can't get any cohesive breakouts from their zone and through the neutral zone ...... Caps had two power plays but couldn't score and Fleury with some nice saves there ...... Cole took one stupid penalty, just can't do that..... 2nd period coming up ....

Another penalty by the Pens 0:29 into the 2nd period ...... big opportunity for the Caps.

Power play goal by Washington .... 1-1 ..... left man open right in front of Fleury.

Another power play for Washington .... terrible penalty on Malkin ! ..... Pens are trying to self destruct.

Goalieman - did they call hooking on that short handed goal for the Pens? It looked like the official called it, but maybe I'm wrong. Or did the goal nullify it?

They called the hooking and yes goal nullified it.

Washington dominating ...... quick 2 on 1 for the Pens .... Guentzel shoots and scores ! ...... 3-1 Pens lead.

The Penguins have had 3 decent chances and scored on each. Washington has had 25 and scored once. Strange game-- glad the Pens are up after 2!

Goalie change for the Caps to start the 3rd period ..... Grubauer in for Holtby.

Holtby had 11 saves on 14 shots through 2 periods ...... Fleury 26 saves on 27 shots.

Yeah, we have been outplayed through 2 periods but have CAPitalized on our rare opportunities.

The Pens are to the Caps what the Patriots are to the Steelers in the postseason. I know the series is far from over, but it's got to be a mental thing at this point for Ovi and Co.

Does anyone think that Novechkin intentionally shot that puck at Hainey's head? That would have been nowhere near on net from the angle it took to catch Hainey's ear that far from the goal. Or maybe Novechkin just has no idea where his shot is going anymore with all of the mucous plugging the throats of the capitals?

That's one I'd like to see change. If it is 5 on 5, the goal should nullify it, no problem... but this situation is shorthanded... so I don't think a goal should cancel the penalty. If it is a 4 on 4 goal, it stays 4 on 4....and essentially when it is 4 on 5 and a delayed penalty situation is in play, it is 4 on 4 by all rights...

I like that

Game 3 is the series. Caps win...they got life...they can come back and look at Game 4 to even the series, flip momentum and regain home ice.

If they lose??? It is golf season in DC because I think they will just lay down then.

IMO, Fleury has been the Pens MVP in 5 of the 7 playoff games so far this season.
This is as positionally sound as I have seen him play. On his angles, reading plays, he is only scrambling when he has to. His rebound control has been much better this series. He is playing with confidence. Honestly this is 2009 SCF level play by him.

As stated, the PENS under their Coach use the Hate and Attacks on the Players and Teams against the rest of the NFL. It is not easy to win another Stanley Cup, but the CAP's Faces near the end of game, is like Owtie says, they looked still intense and furious they were beaten that badly, and we shall see if they can muster the determination to comeback now in Pittsburgh. The PENS look like last year, no one gave them a chance to win the Stanley Cup, but they did it anyhow.

The CAPS will show up but so will the PENS!

Fleury is definitely playing aggressive angles with good goalie movement ..... this is why I always talk about how important playing the proper angles/positions and goalie movement from one angle/position to the next is ...... when done well, it allows the goalie to make the save much more easily..... and yes, he is reading plays quickly/well and is very confident right now.

As far as rebounds, he is absorbing them a lot more often now and the ones he is not absorbing, he is directing to safer areas which is what you try to do.

The Pens are still giving up too many shots on goal but I have to commend the team for the number of shots they have blocked .... amazing.

The questions are, 1) will Fleury keep up his great play and 2) will the rest of the players play better as a team ? We still need to have better breakouts and puck possession ...... I think it will be difficult for Fleury to play this well the entire series/playoffs and if the team doesn't make some adjustments and get all four lines and the defense playing somewhat better, the Caps can still win this series.

The caps cannot and will not win this series. Players pissed Holtby was pulled, players only meeting, Niskanen snapping at reporters, Ovie shooting at a players head.... They're done. Trotz is fired. This might be a 4 game sweep.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. You have to win 3 before you can win 4. The Caps are dangerous and the Pens were fortunate not to be down multiple goals early last night. The Pens need to keep their foot on the neck of the Caps in Game 3. Don't let em up.

The cops locker room is a mess. If you think they can pull together as a team in spite of their coach and win 2 of 3 in Pittsburgh....I don't know what to say. I understand being cautious as a fan, but this series is over.

All they have to do is win the next game to change the series dynamic. Win game 3, and now the pressure is fully back on the Pens in Game 4 to win. So I am not naive enough to think that the Pens are going to sweep or walk to an easy series win.

That being said, interesting dynamic in the Caps room. No matter what happens, this version of the Caps likely will be seriously different going on. Oshie, Williams, Alzner and Shattenkirk are UFA's, Kuznetsov, Burakowsky, Orlov and Schmidt, RFA's. Lots of big contracts over there. It is almost like they have too many Russians. Lot's of skill and talent, but you wonder if they have what it takes.

I thought the one area the Caps had an advantage was in goal. But MAF has way outplayed Holtby.

The one thing though as a Pens fan you have to be happy about, is the Pens really haven't played a great game, and you would like to think that they will "get to their game" sometime earlier than the second period.

I thought that as well and even sent a tweet out about it that night. That shot might have cleared the glass, ovechkin is better shooter than that

Garbage league.

So how is this for an NHL playoff rule change: If a player is injured as a result of a misconduct assessed penalty, the team of the injured player gets to choose what player on the opposing team sits out the misconduct penalty and suspension. That would stop the targeting of the leagues best players in the playoffs.

Far from an expert, but NHL hockey is NHL hockey. Part of it is what we witnessed tonight. Was it intentional? Hard to say - but this is the game, for better or worse.

Having said that, I sincerely hope the Pens come out and kick the sh*t out of the Caps on Wednesday. :D (And obviously I hope Sid is ok which isn't a given at this point given his history.)

You are right and that violence to affect the game outcome will always hold hockey down from becoming really big like the NFL and MLB.

I did think in the back of my head that maybe tying that game wasn't the best outcome. If the caps score into the open net the Pens could go goon and try to get to one of the caps stars....
