OT: Is NIL demeaning to women???

She seems to mean that while NIL is a good thing, female athletes selling skin on social media is a step back.
See, there is this thing called inference. Some call it, reading between the lines.
The girls have every right to do that but many people would think we haven't grown as a society if these girls have to post near-nude photos to make as much money as the QB or WR.
The market for NIL money is driven by men. Talented male athletes have value because alumni who never played the game need their school to win championships or it somehow detracts from their life. Talented women athletes have value because generally, their looks attract attention to a given product. One happens before the fact to attract talent and the other happens afterwards to sell products.

Unless a school decides to only recruit attractive women for their sports teams, there isn't any reason for alarm. It's just marketing while you have those precious fifteen minutes.

The coach is making making millions a year because she’s been successful despite looking like a foot .

Livvy isn’t getting paid millions just because she’s cute - it’s also because she’s a high profile athlete at LSU
She’s a girl from Jersey who got a full ride because she’s good enough to compete at the highest college level .

I think there are still some standards these kids need to pay attention to when using the school's branding. Some schools also have a personal conduct and social media policy that have to be followed. Especially for athletes. That's probably where the line gets drawn.

I think the ultimate point is that "demeaning" is a poor choice of words for the coach. It's also kind of self-serving. I get her overarching point but any situation where a person chooses to engage in an activity is very far from being demeaning to them. Perhaps it doesn't serve the sport well, which is what I think she meant to say, but neither do a host of other things that happen in and around college sports programs.
yeah, i believe Chris said that pitt athletes cant promote or be affiliated with various companies within specific industries. Casinos/bars. Like Hammond couldnt do a casino ad or Hugely couldnt promote a bar or strip club.

How much would she be making if she was ugly?

How much would she be making if she never posted anything on social media?

She is making money because she's

a) attractive
b) posts scantily clad photos

I don’t know what the solution is or who wants one.

My guess is the universities were in favor of these NILS and likely had a good bit to do with their creation. They didn’t want to have to treat these ‘students’ as employees so the NIL was a better option to address the growing pressure to increase the compensation to these athletes above the mere free tuition, room n board.

It shouldn’t have been hard to predict how this was all going to work out but I guess it was.
Even if it was totally unrelated to the sport? Like they couldn't do regular modeling on the side?
You definitely wouldn’t be able to do it wearing the university’s swim suit, as Andreeeaaa did (I think she did. I’ll go back and look. I’ll double and triple check it in fact…yes, she did, SJSU stuff multiple times).

Back then she’d get in some trouble. Today, they are thrilled she’s doing it. That’s the diff.

So they are saying she’s paid x amount by Gatorade and dividing the number of posts she’s made for them .
Not exactly a per post payment
I have heard it described as amount per post. Same thing you hear with the kardashians. I also imagine these companies aren’t saying post 1,000 times a day how much you love Gatorade. And maybe the deal is how many posts they have to do. That still means paid x amount per post.
Not really sure what your argument is here. These players are getting paid and found a way to market themselves via social media. Some showing skin and some not.

She is an Instagram Model/Influencer who also does some gymnastics in her spare time. Nothing wrong with that. But lets not pretend she is making money based on gymnastics.

I’ve been seeing her commercials on tv for athletic wear.

Why does Tara think it is necessary to attack a beautiful young college woman by name? If she has a problem with women making money by modeling, she could just stick to that point.

Frankly, the athlete from LSU has the right to make money in any legal endeavor she chooses, and it's no business of a college coach in California.

Again, her point was that these females are having to take their clothes off to profit off NIL which she views as a step back. No one is saying they shouldn't be allowed to do that but the fact that the ones who get close to naked make more than actual good players CAN be viewed as a step backward

If you look at the top 100 female NIL earners, mostly blond, pretty, and show mostly skin with a few uniform and game stuff in there. The LSU girl isn’t just modeling, there is some stuff that is pushing closer to nudity. My youngest daughter just got her first offer for NIL. She’s a senior in high school. The company is not wanting anything remotely close to questionable. It’s all about a local fitness center and 100% respectable with a focus on what the training has done to improve her strength, fitness, and performance.

Its why I said Dunne was a soft-core porn model. That is a slight exaggeration and what she is doing is totally legal and she SHOULD be allowed to profit off her skin in my opinion but it doesn't make Tara Van Der Veer wrong. These girls are selling skin, not athletic ability. I don't know how anyone can view that as being a great thing for women's sports. Its great for the girls individually, but as a whole, its not like its creating a path to profits for talented female athletes unless they want to take their clothes off.

TBF, the competition uniform worn by Dunn shows a lot of skin. Should gymnasts wear leggings and long sleeves? Was the Norwegian beach handball team right? I think they were.
Dunn is actually truly NIL, not pay for play. She has the look that sells products. And men are the ones googling all over her photos, but women are the ones buying the products.
Yes, Dunn is profiting from her looks. What the NIL rules allow her to do is to continue to be a college athlete. In past years, she may have quit LSU gymnastics to make modeling money.

I mean, yes. College gymnastic uniforms really shouldn't be that much ass. That said, if they want to wear that and its allowed, they should be able to just like the Norway beach handball team should have been. I agree Dunne is a true NIL and I've said a million times she should be allowed to do what she's doing. Its just not a great thing for women's sports

I would argue that NIL isn't good for men's sports either. Very few male NCAA athletes are recognizable nor attractive enough outside of playing uniform to sell products. So the money is pay for play, not true NIL.
True athletic ability without looks, personality and charisma isn't going to sell products.
I don't think I have bought a product because it was endorsed by an athlete. I have avoided brands though. I did buy some dog products that were endorsed by a dog on Instagram. Fashion is important for greyhounds.

Well yea, but the males arent really getting NIL as intended. They're getting pay for play. That said, star football and basketball players have real value in their local communities. Forget pay for play for a second, the PSU star or OSU star is probably worth 50K or so in "legit" local NIL deals. You know, do a commercial for a plumber and get 5K. Show up at a mall for a signing, get 2500, stuff like that. Now the 3rd string CB on those teams arent worth anything at all in true NIL but are getting pay for play salaries.

And you’re wrong

Trivia question without looking, what is her best gymnastics routine?

No idea. Is she even good at gymnastics? She doesn't even make this list from last year's championships. As I said, she is an Instagram Model, who, in her spare time, plays a D1 sport. She is 90% model, 10% athlete. She isnt marketable because of her gymnastics ability and there's no denying that.

I seriously doubt old men are following her on instagram.

Young men? Absolutely.
They blast her very revealing posts all over the place, including barstool sports. She’s got plenty of older men. And if you don’t think so you don’t know older men very well.

I didn't read much of this thread, but isn't this the entire point of NIL? We want to see student athletes making money for NIL, not pay for play like they are in college football.

Yes. What Dunne is doing is fine as she is using her body to profit from this new law. No one is saying she shouldn't be able to. The debate is whether this is "demeaning" or bad for women's sports that they have to do soft core porn to make money. There is this D1 soccer player (forget where) who does cool soccer tricks in a thong. Jessica something. She doesn't have the following because she's like a 6 or 7, not a 9 like Dunne but some might view it as bad for women's sports that these girls have to get so close to being naked to make money.

Because I don't like stupidity. And I think Tara Van Der Veer was villified by all the snowflakes for being correct. You cannot possess any brain cells and think these girls are being paid for their athletic talents.
