OT pens gave 4

Doc Von Y, got a new man crush. I don't know if you have been watching the Avs/Sharks, but Cale Makar, my god, this kid is going to be a superstar.

Owt's rooting interest for the playoffs as it currently exists based on franchise/fanbase history.

8. Boston. Come on, never a fanbase has deserved less. They have won enough the last 15 years.
7. Isles cause well their out.
6. Canes. Front running bandwagoners, who only start coming to games if they make the playoffs.
5. Stars. Because they are as "meh" as "meh" comes.
4. Avs. It's been awhile, but they have seen greatness and judging from the young talent, they are going to see some greatness in the coming years.
3. Blue Jackets. Not bad for this market, they have been building, I always said if they win a playoff series, that might be enough to catapult. Rivals with the Pens, so can't be totally happy for them, but a Pens/Jackets rivalry amped up is good for hockey in this region.
2. Sharks. Been so good for so long, good fan support, Joe Thornton, they are as deserving as any other.
1. Not that I am a Blues fan in any stretch. But.....The Blues are the last remaining member of the "Second Six" (Pens, Flyers, Blues, Seals defunct, Stars (now Dallas), Kings) to have never won a Stanley Cup. In fact, I don't think they have even made the SCF's since 1970. Long suffering fanbase, it maybe their time. Finally.

For probably 95% of the local population, there is nothing more irrelevant or boring than hockey AFTER the local club is eliminated.

I'll bet it ranks BELOW professional soccer and curling as far as who gives a rat's patoot.
No other sport falls off the radar more completely or quickly than professional hockey.

If you care, that's great for you, to each their own, but when do the Steelers go to camp?

I don't think it is that bad. Pro soccer? Curling? Come on. We will see after the second round. I am interested to see now not just that the Pens are out, but also the Caps have a strong local interest (not out of love) as would the Flyers. But Pittsburgh and Buffalo are the two US markets that usually are top 10 in viewing regardless of postseason teams involved.

Or perhaps everyone is watching dem Buccos!!

Hockey is its own worst enemy. The rules are so inconsistent people are still talking about Vegas and SJ.

I think Blues made the finals against Boston, the first year of existence?

Blues actually lost three straight finals under Scotty Bowman and the Second Six joined the league

The old “Western Division”. How crazy is it that for those first 3 years after expansion from 6 to 12 one of the 6 new teams (STL, Philly, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, LA and Oakland) was guaranteed to be in the SCF? I can only imagine the reaction among the Canadian traditionalists.

But think about it.......... Since then, the Blues have never been back. I mean, the Pens have 5 friggin Cups and 6 appearances in the Finals in the last 28 years, the Flyers have what 6 Finals appearances since 1974, the Kings have won 2 Cups. The Blues haven't even been to one finals since.

At one point, they made the playoffs like 22 straight years, and no championships, no trips to the finals. Like I used them as an example on the basketball board, I would rather have the Penguins history over the Blues. The Blues more consistent, but my god, how can you even pick that over the Pens unbelievable success??

Yes and they have had some really great teams and star talent, yet haven’t been back since the Bobby Orr goal.

The Pens got jobbed in 1996 and they had a chance in 2001 though it was not as if the Devils were a slouch that year.

Other than that, they’ve been unequivocally successful. Even comparing them with Chicago, they’ve fallen off a cliff.

I would argue that if Crosby leads this team to another cup he’d be on the shortlist for best ever. There’s a reason back to back cups are so hard to win.

What did the MLB playoffs draw locally the past few years after the Pirates 3 year run of Buctober "glory"? Other than the NFL and college basketball I doubt any post season doesn't drop without a local team in the field.

I just think that you are probably in that 70+ age range that came of age too late to be emotionally invested in the Pens run of success in the late 80s - 90s. So you might enjoy watching but view it more casually and secondary to football and baseball. Nothing wrong with that, but the boom in youth hockey has meant that plenty of households have become fans of the game, not just the Pens.

I never watch hockey or baseball playoffs after the Pens or (chuckle) the Pirates are out. I mean, not even by accident, if the channel lands on a game inadvertently, I curse and immediately switch to anything else.

As much as I grimly felt redemption in validation of my assessment that the Islanders really sucked, by way of their getting humiliated by the Canes, and the Pens would have lost that series to any team ... I neither sought out nor watched none of those NY Carolina games.

And I truly couldn't say who won the World Series for probably the last 20 years. As i sit here, who won last year, I ask myself? Hmm. I really have no idea.

I'll watch just a bit of the NCAA tournament as well, even when Pitt is not part of it (and I suppose that will be the rule going forward). Rarely do I carve out time just for it, nor do I usually watch more than a subset of most games. No patience for a full game. I usually do make myself aware of the champ game, and schedule time to tune in to it for a bit longer than the others.

NBA? Chortle. I didn't even think of it. I had to edit this post after the fact because I belatedly remembered FORGETTING it. I haven't watched a nanosec of ANY NBA game in 30ish years.

I watch at least some of a good number of college football bowl games and playoff games, even if Pitt hasn't qualified. Sometimes full games, usually depending on how much I hate one of the participants, and if they are losing. I'll notice the scheduled days and times, and often carve out specific intent to watch certain games. Again, not all, definitely not the Compass or Beef o Brady variety (but I'll watch even those by accident), but most top bowls.

However, I readily watch NFL playoffs even if the Steelers are out, several games, most all the way through. I'm definitely aware of the matchups days and times and plan around it. Especially from the conference championship games onward. But usually most if not all.

So I guess I'm a FOOTBALL fan, through and through, especially NFL and most college. But only a Pitt fan for all other sports other than football. And Pitt interest is starting to wane too, as relentless futility sets in...

I have to admit, if I am home or in a hotel and not with customers out, I am watching at least most of the hockey playoff game that is on. But I am a fan of the sport itself, not just the Pens.

I guess I must be the only on here still watching. Did anyone see those OT's last night? I missed the regulation because had to take clients to the Pirate game. But got home in time to see OT. Wow. Game 7, OT hockey is drama absolutely unsurpassed in any of the other pro sports.

Really happy for the Blues and especially their fans. Definitely rooting for whoever comes out of the West to win the Cup.

I watched too. Had to go to bed after regulation for work in the AM. Really hope SJ wins tonight because them vs STL will be extremely entertaining. Similarly SJ had a hell of a team in 2016 and ran into a buzz saw.

I’m thinking Carolina will surprise most and best Boston. Brindamour is absolutely fantastic and should win the Jack Adams hands down. I have nothing against Boston other than they have enough championships. I’m rooting for the West from here on out too.

I am a hockey fan like you and have been watching quite a bit. The Bruins vs Bluejackets was some fantastic hockey. You are right though, there is something about the 7th game that makes for some riveting hockey. I will be rooting for Jordan Stall and the Hurricanes to win it all, but, I don't think they can beat Boston. I hate all things Boston though and can't stand that douchebag Brad Marchand along with Chara and Rask and even some others. As long as Boston doesn't win it I will be happy. I will pull for Carolina but if the west wins it I am fine with that. I wouldn't mind Long suffering Blues fans winning a cup either.

Last night's game was great. I thought Game 5 of the CBJ-BOS series was tremendous too. Couldn't believe I was actually rooting for CBJ. Oh well.

I'd like to see the Blues or Avs win, but unfortunately I don't think anyone has the depth to beat Boston over 7.

And it is all set.

Carolina vs Boston (which has a bit of a Ottawa/Pittsburgh feel to it) and
St. Louis vs San Jose.

Really looking forward to the Western matchup, but wondering/worried about how the layoff (sweep) will hurt the Canes. Can't root for Boston in any way.

Ratings just out. Pittsburgh is 7th just behind Columbus and Denver (both in the 2nd rd).
1) Buffalo (always high)
2) Boston (still in)
3) St Louis (still in)
4) Providence (Boston market)
5) Columbus (2nd rd)
6) Denver (2nd rd)
7) Pittsburgh (1st rd)
8) Minn-St Paul (traditional hockey market)
9) Raleigh (still in)
10) Vegas.

Pittsburgh is a really strong NHL market now. As it should be.

I hope Vegas feels the residual effects of their initial success for a long time. I enjoy the different styles in conference play.
