OT: The forgotten PENS

This organization right now seems half like the Steelers with their staleness and unwilling to change direction and the Pirates with abject incompetency.
I wouldn’t read to much into that presser. Even if he has plans to blow the thing up he’s not going to say it publicly. First off he’d lose his bargaining power and secondly he lose the team. I suspect he has had confidential conversations with Sid to see if he has any desire of hanging around though a rebuild. He’ll give him the option of staying. IMO everyone is else should be used to get younger and more talented While they can get some talent for Jake I doubt that moves the needle enough to turn them into a playoff team this year. If you move Jake (which they have to) I think you have to move the rest. Waiting till the off season or till next year wulo reduce what value they can get for the rest

So perusing alot of Penguin blogs and fansites, Facebook, etc....there is a huge quorum of stupid Pens fans that blame the Pens plight on.......................................the goalie!!! Specifically Jarry.

I told someone he was stupid and should sue his schools for malpractice on education. Going into the last game there were 16 teams in the Eastern Conference:
The Pens ranked 2 out of 16 in goals against.
The Pens ranked 15th out of 15 in goals scoring.
And the conclusion is the goaltending is the problem.
And that goaltending, doesn't have Scott Stevens, Larry Robinson, Drew Doughty, etc...in front of them. The goaltending has been fine, good, if not great.

Which leads me to my biggest revisionist pet peeve in Penguins history. It pains me to say this, because like everyone else I like the guy, and he is just a great dude and probable Hall of Famer. They act like getting rid of Marc Andre Fleury is the source of all the Penguins problems. Really?
2010 Now they may have eventually run out of steam, but they had a 3-2 series lead against the Canadians and MAF just completely blew those games, especially game 7,
In 2011, Sid and Geno was out, so the likelihood the Pens having a run was limited. But they were up 3-1 in this series, and was outscored 13-4 in the last 3 games. MAF was outplayed by a journeyman Dwayne Roloson who had a .950 GAA, where MAF had an .899.
2012. Ugh. Worse. MAF single handedly blew this series against the Flyers because he was just god awful! Usually Playoff hockey goalies have a save % around 0.912. The Philly goalie's was a pathetic 0.871. That should lose you a series every time. Except MAF's save percentage was....0.837! That was 50 points lower than the next goalie overall.
2013. The Pens made it to the conference finals and were shut down by the Boston Bruins. No thanks to MAF. He was replaced by Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun had a .940 save percentage that playoff, MAF 0.883. Now Fleury didn't lose it, but the same defense the two goalies had 60 points difference in save % and Vokoun played more games so it wasn't a 1-2 game fluke.
2014. Pens lost to the Rangers in Rd 1. MAF was good. .915% but King Henrik was much better at 0.930.
2015: Pens lost to the Rangers 4 games to 1. But MAF was good, 0.927, this loss was on Sid, Geno and the fellas for forgetting how to score.
2016: Pens win Cup. Matt Murray has a .923% save percentage
2017: Pens win Cup. MAF plays the first two series and wins them both with an excellent 0.923 save percentage. MM plays the last two and leads the playoffs with a 0.937 percentage......including back to back shutouts to win the Cup.

Not trying to trash him, MAF left and thrived whereas Matt Murray certainly didn't. But there wasn't a GM alive or dead who wouldn't have made the same choice of Murray over Fleury. But the thought that Fleury would be the answers to all our problems....is pure bunk. Hell ,Jarry has even scored a goal, which is more than some skaters can say.

You are right about the goalies not being the problem this year but in prior years, particularly prior year playoff series losses more so than regular season, you can definitely put a good share of the blame on goalies.

Yes. But as much as the goalies, I blame the former GM's (plural) who were both former goalies comfortable with an unproven Jarry and a frail backup like DeSmith and going with that season after season. Picking up a Ned or a Halak like backup made sense but they never did.

When anyone discusses the best hockey ever played as far as an event, I always reference the 1987 Canada Cup finals. Best of 3 game series between the Soviets and Canadians. It was Mario Lemieux's coming out party in some respects. He was only 22.

3 games. Russia won the first. Canada the next two. All 3 games ended 6-5. Mario scored the game winner in double OT in Game 2, Then the winner in Game 3 with like 1:26 left (accuracy needed because Joe panther would correct if it wasnt)

But it was spectacular hockey. The Soviets had Fetisov, Kasatonov, Larionov, Makarov, Krutov, Kamensky, Kravchuk et al, all in their primes. Canada had Gretzy, Lemieux, Messier, Coffey, Bourque, Hawerchuk, Gartner, Goulet. Murphy and Fuhr all in their primes.
The greatest set up man in history with the greatest goal scorer in history on a 3 on 1 break. Murph along for the ride.

Don’t forget, Mario scored the OT game winner to beat the USA in that tourney…if I recall correctly. He was the most dominant player on the ice in that event but maybe I’m biased. They gave the MVP to Gretzky of course as they always did. I watched every game of that tourney on the Financial News Network of all places.

Fast forward 20 years and I met Gretzky in a Disney world pool (animal kingdom lodge). Our kids were playing together in the water. We were standing at the bottom of the slide catching the kids as they came down. He and I were shooting the shit like normal guys do while standing there…but this was Wayne Gretzky, humble in every way. But that’s hockey guys for ya. I told him how I hated him when I was a kid in the 80’s, as I was loyal to Mario. He chuckled.

I think Dubas is a smart, articulate person that doesn't put himself into a corner when he discusses issues but I also think that in all his press conferences since he arrived in Pittsburgh, Kyle gives pretty big hints of where he stands and what he is thinking at the time ...... yes the situation and subsequent decisions can change quickly and what actually happens may be different from what was said yesterday but some of the take aways to me from his recent press conference were .....

- Although I think they could still keep Geuntzel (if they quickly get back into better playoff contention), it is becoming increasingly likely that they will trade him (won't be close enough to playoffs) for future draft pick(s) and/or young promising NHL player(s) and/or prospect(s) all to get younger/faster ...... if they trade him before the trade deadline, it will be for the future not for this years playoff hopes ....

- He doesn't want to trade draft picks away to bolster the roster for a shot at this years playoffs .....

- He identifies the "core" of the team as Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson and he feels they can still be productive players and mentors for younger players over the next few years ..... and since he has not asked any players to waive their NMC to date, it is unlikely he will trade any core players ..... and thus a major rebuild unlikely at the trade deadline ......

- He has been receiving a lot of calls from other teams about players the Pens may trade at the deadline and trying to see what return he may ask/get ...... and if the team becomes sellers, I think some players (in addition to Geuntzel) such as Reilly Smith who has been a big disappointment, Nedeljkovic who will be a free agent and may get more money elsewhere next year, along with Rakell (bad year), Eller, Graves (bad year), POJ, etc. may be considered for trade depending on the return (not saying all or any of these will be traded but they seem to be candidates and I don't think he wants to trade any of their very few top prospects) .....

- Dubas said that the goal of additions to the bottom 6 prior to this year were to decrease the number of goals against and they knew there might not be a significant increase in goals scored in comparison to last season by the new group but hoped the power play would make up for that, but the PP has performed way below expectations and they aren't scoring enough goals and that needs to be improved .....

- Dubas clearly reiterated his high praise for Sullivan, so doubt any coaching change for the rest of this season although we do know that a GM's praise of a coach can sometimes be a "kiss of death" for that coach ...... Dubas saying he felt Sullivan was not only a great coach but also a great developer of players, the two have a really good working relationship, and Dubas stated talk about Sullivan basically shouldn't be in the equation right now, all of which makes me think Sullivan will be here to start next season but if there are any coaching changes, it is more likely to be assistants (again that may change at any moment and Sullivan could be gone) ......

- Again, the above are what I think Dubas is telling us he is thinking regarding the team at the moment, it could change at any time ..... and is not necessarily what goalieman thinks ....LOL ..... will have a couple comments about the goalies later.

Two of the best parts of the team this year have been Crosby's line and the goalies ..... the goalies overall have played well especially Jarry who has been very good ...... TJ has stayed healthy so far (knock on wood), improved some of the weaknesses in his game, and has been more consistent this season to date ....... Nedeljkovic, on the other hand, started the season really well but over the last 7 weeks or so has shown some weaknesses in his game and hasn't played nearly as well as earlier in the season ...... advanced goalie stats would confirm this view .... (dSV% = delta save %, GSAx = goals saved above expected, HDSV% = high danger save %) .....

For the entire season to date, TJ's stats show a dSV% that is # 10 out of 57 goalies, GSAx = #8, HDSV% = #38 while Ned's stats show a dSV% = #30 out of 57, GSAx = #35, HDSV% = #52 all getting worse more recently even though his dSV% and GSAx are still overall mildly positive.

Since 1/1/24, TJ's dSV% = #19 of 47, GSAx = #19, and HDSV% = #19 out of 59 ...... Ned's dSV% = #44 of47, GSAx = #40, and HDSV% = #58 out of 59 (all bad)..... TJ has played 12 games and Ned 8 since 1/1/24 .....

Since 2/2/24, TJ in 4 games has a dSV% = #11 out of 52, GSAx = #13, and HDSV% = #9 out of 55 ...... Ned in 3 games has a dSV% = #41 out of 47, GSAx = #40, and a HDSV% = 42 out of 55.

The stats show that TJ has overall this season been a very good goalie, pretty consistent, and as the season progressed has improved his HDSV% greatly (the shots with the highest chance of scoring) ...... Ned started very strong but his play has dropped off significantly more recently and his HDSV% is a problem.

Last night I was listening to the game on the radio on my way home from the Pitt women's basketball game. At the time the score was 3-1. Steve Mears was talking about how Jarry must be feeling pretty good that they were scoring all those goals for him, because in his previous ten starts the Penguins had scored a total of 20 goals. So three was a big improvement!

Not great news that GM Dubas is enamored with Mike Sullivan. Apparently we are going to have another Mike in this town, who can coach forever regardless of performance. This team hasn't won a playoff series since 2018 I believe. This year will mark 2 years where we don't even play a playoff game.

Meanwhile the coach still talks about "getting to their game." They no longer have the speed to generate a forecheck and carry the play. They are woefully weak, unable to clear their net front. Even worse, the only guy that ever goes to the front of the opponents net is Jake Guentzel. It is not a coincidence that little Jake is hurt right now, as he takes a beating from opponents all year.

These are the most glaring problems along with a power play that either passes it around the perimeter, effectively killing it while playing keep away, can't get a shot through, or gives up short handed chances time and again. The fact that Dubas can oversee a franchise in complete disarray and still think they have a great coach who can develop players and is the right man for the job is shocking to me. Sully is a one trick pony who won with his style when our players were young enough to play his style. Keeping Sully cost us our stars last few good years. The Penguins will soon return to what they were prior to Mario saving the franchise. Please give me a new coach with a new strategy and that values some size and toughness. Sully pussy hockey must go now!!

Interesting development ....... Jake Guentzel who is injured, on the LTIR, and can't come back to play before 3/10/24 and the trade deadline is 3/8/24 will apparently accompany the team on a four game mostly western Canada road trip from 2/27/24 thru 3/3/24 even though he is rehabbing and not on the ice much if at all yet ....... why not stay in Pittsburgh and continue his rehab ? ...... well the 4 teams they play on the road trip are the Canucks, Kraken, Flames, and Oilers and at least 2 of those teams are supposedly interested in a trade for Guentzel ...... wonder if he is going on the trip for those teams to check out how Jake is doing in anticipation of a trade before the deadline ? ...... I could be wrong, time will tell.

Good observation goalieman...I think you are on to something there if he does travel with them. I can't see them not being a seller at the deadline. Just can't see them as a serious SC contender anymore, even if they managed to squeak into the playoffs, which I still believe is a long shot. Time to tear it down and prepare to rebuild for the future.

I do not really understand this longshot for the playoffs thought when they are 4 points behind a team that has played 3 more games than them. They are deep in the thick of a playoff chase.

The bigger issue is whether that really matters; as in, if they get in, do they have a roster that can beat teams in 7 games?

The more that I look at them, the more I think that this is situation where they need to retool more than tear down and rebuild. Crosby is still a top ten player in hockey and likely to stay at that level for a few more years. They are tied to Malkin and Letang's contract is too good for them to move. But, everything else is disposable, they have some guys that have a great deal of value (ex: Guentzel, Karlsson, Pettersson), other guys with solid value (Smith, Rust, Graves, Eller, Jarry, etc) and their ownership is willing to spend to the cap limits because they get the revenue from the fans and they have deep pockets.

They have the ability to flip some experienced guys for value, get some solid young players/prospects and then spend in the offseason to get some top level players back in. That would mean that maybe they have waive a white flag on this stretch run, but considering that they still have some guys with movable value and these are not the broke Penguins of the early 2000s, 1980s, it probably makes good sense.

I would not call it a tear down though, because if they did something like that, they are still going to come out of the other end with a guy like Crosby and some other highly formidable players. Tear down is just way too dramatic and frankly they likely do not need a tear down as much they need to switch the mix, retool and get more young legs in the lineup.

I think the end question here that ownership needs to account for is how to sell it to Crosby, though some of his recent comments indicate he is in it with the Penguins for a pound, let alone a penny.

They are actually 9 points out of the last wild card. Even with games at hand, that is tough to make up with a team not winning more than 3 games in a row all season. Plus you have the "loser" point. The Islanders have a worse record than the Pens, but are kings of the OTL (loser point) and 14 losses alone in OT. Finally, it is not like the Pens have to leap and compete with one team for those wild card slots, there are like 5-6 of them.

Barring a miracle, it is over. They lose today and it almost definitive.

For some reason, I missed the other end of the standings. I apologize for the error.

That said, everyone has played more games than them and if they get on a streak (which is not exactly a miracle), they are not far off. There over 25 games left for them, so a run is not unheard of.

Let's see...you say to retool rather than tear down. You then go on to say that everybody other than Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are desposible. You mention that Guentzel, Karlsson, Petterson, Smith, Rust, Eller, Jarry all have value.

If you trade those players, I would think that would constitute close to a tear down. You are purging the roster of "value" players to "get more young legs" in the organization. More prospects. I have been advocating for that for a couple years using the Rangers as an example. Trading those players assures they don't make the playoffs, which you say is still within reach.

Not sure just what you are saying here. Keep players for a playoff run you say is within reach, or trade half the roster of players with value for younger, future assets that all but assures no playoffs. They missed the playoffs last year, tried to retool some this year while keeping the core, and are no better than at this point last year.

They had a great run. Time to turn mother's picture to the wall and begin making the moves towards a rebuild.

You know that milk that has reached its expiration date? It's okay to drink the next day. And the next day. But eventually in a few days, it sours and starts to smell and taste horrible. The Pens are now at this point.

Pens up 4-2 in 2nd period :cool::cool: ...... 63 seconds later, Tied 4-4 :mad::mad:

By the way, prior to the game today with the Flyers, the Pens were estimated to have a 38.1% chance of making the Playoffs.

I see people blaming this game on Jarry and granted he was not great. Jarry has become this new lynchpin for Penguins fans, because we know Marc Andre Fleury never gave up 6 goals in a game.

Someone said, "well Jarry never steals us a win". Really? 6 shutouts? I am pretty confident in saying he stole the Montreal win the other night because the Pens were giving up chances like it was the 1st of the month. More correctly, it was the first time all year the PP bailed out the team.

PP bailed them out yesterday with 2 goals. Of course it really tried to give all that good fortune back when they gave up the short-handed goal, 1 of the 2 Flyers goals in about a minute that quickly erased a 2-goal lead.

This will be unpopular…this isn’t a good hockey city. Hell, it really isn’t a great sports city IMO. It has oneof the most fair weather and spoiled fanbases I have ever encountered.

The penguins attendance goes in the tank if they aren’t an elite team. The Steelers immediately start losing attendance if they aren’t a Super Bowl contender. Yes the pirates suck, but even in the best of times people don’t show up for April and may games or September games. Pitt basketball is also a fine example of how attendance fell off a cliff at the end of Jamie’s tenure for a program that went go the tourney 3 of 4 years.

Anytime I hear about how great Pittsburgh fans are I want to puke. Every town has front runners, but Pittsburgh takes it to a whole new level, and the amount of success the penguins and Steelers have had has spoiled the city rotten
I wouldn't take it that far. Yes the Steelers and Penguins have spoiled the town regarding success, but both the Steelers and Penguins have become stale. Pittsburgh is still a smaller city for pro sports and attendance is in no way poor considering the population size. One could argue the Pirates have an oversized following given their lack of success for two generations now.

Kenny is trying to give SMF a run for the "hot take" guy. He just can't help himself.

Where the Pens are, you can't just look at what their doing, but their competitors for the playoff spots. Big blows last night with the Caps winning, and the Isles winning in OT. They need not just to win, but have other teams lose. Not enough of them are doing it on a consistent basis. They have to leap essentially 5 teams.

They have 4 games in hand on the Flyers and 5 on Tampa. They could overtake both of those playoff teams just by winning those catch-up games.

Of course, who in their right mind would envision the Pens winning all 4 or 5 of those catch-up games.

Yeah...they have been playing those "catch up" games for a month now. And they aren't catching up.

This team is not even close to a cup contender and is a marginal playoff team. Other than Sid, they dont have near the overall talent that they had when he was in his prime but probably more important as talented as those teams were they had "Grit". They had hard nosed tough hocky players who were willing to take the body and play physical. They were far from a physical team but they had enough physicality to win the battles in the corners, in front of the net and keep the other team honest. IMO thats what this team lacks the most.

IMO Trying to squeeze out one or two more playoff opportunities simply makes the long term rebuilding process that much more difficult. Will be interesting to see what Dubas does but IMO his future success hinges on what he does this spring.

Odds are, when they come home from this western trip, we will know if they are at all playoff worthy. They really need to go at least 3-1 against some solid competition. Without Jake and Rust, the chances of going 3-1 are slim and none. This trip will likely end any playoff talk and pivot the talk to who we can unload and what we can get in return.

So we have "Bubble Watch" for hoops. I will give you "Penguin Watch", Games that have some affect on the Pens playoff chances. So if two Western Conference teams are playing, who cares. If the Rangers are playing the Bruins. No effect on the Pens.

Here are the general rule of thumbs. The Pens are actually closer to the 3rd spot in the Metro (the Flyers) than the two Wild Card spots right now Detroit and Tampa.

So....if an Atlantic division team is playing a Metro contender, root for the Atlantic.
Atlantic's two teams again are Detroit and Tampa. The Metro's teams are the Flyers, Caps, Devils and Islanders.

When there is a game involving these teams, the last thing you want is an OT result, because both teams get points. So for tonight:

The Caps play Detroit. Root for Detroit. Definitely.
Tampa plays the Flyers. Best to root for Tampa
Again, either of these games go to OT, not good because technically the Pens are in a battle with all of these teams.
Devils vs the Sharks. Yeah no brainer, Go Sharks Go!
