OT: What’s Good Now On TV?

I am surprised that no one has mentioned That Dirty Black Bag. It was originally shown on AMC+ last year, but now available on AMC Network and On Demand. I just saw the 1st Episode, as the Trailer looked great, and could end up being my Favorite Western Series. It stars the same Dude, who played the Title Role of the past AMC Series, Preacher, and so far he is good as the Sheriff in this Series.

I also see that Gangs Of London, now is making their 2nd Season available on AMC+ and also just showed for free the 1st Episode of the 2nd Season On Demand on AMC. The First Season was on AMC, and is the Best Gang Series I had seen based on that First Season. It is the Most Violent TV Series, that I have seen on TV(and including any Movies in this Genre), but the Violence is Cartoonish in a Tarantino Style, as over the top at times. It was sad losing the Sean Wallace Character at the end of the 1st Season, as he was awesome, but based on the 1st Episode of the 2nd Season, looks like a few others will fill that void in Gangland..

It is a shame that AMC and the person in charge of their TV Series programming has already removed a few Series that were originally green lighted for 2023, including a 2nd Season for 61st Street, although looks like they are sticking with Dark Winds for a 2nd Season, as it is based on a Series of 18 Books about Leaphorn and Chee, so plenty of material to mine for several seasons. I thought Interview with a Vampire was great, although only 7 episodes, and hope it gets another season. Still assessing how much I like The Mayfair Witches(also based on Anne Rice Books).

AMC Head Executive(or whatever his Title is) seems to rather give us 3 Spinoffs from TWD, with separate series for Maggie/Negan( in NYC), Daryl(in France) and Rick/Michone, and sacrifice development of other New Series. They do have Lucky Hank starring Bob Odenkirk starting in March.

AMC seems to have needed to reduce their New TV Series by 50%, and guessing it is because they are not getting many subscribers for AMC+, as competition among Streaming Services means not every one of them will survive(or AMC+ can only survive by reducing their output of New Series). It is ashame though, as AMC has put out several Good TV Series in recent years.

I can see now though why Vince Gilligan decided to sign with Apple+ to develop his next TV Series now that he has finished Better Call Saul. I am hoping in a few years that he decides to do a Series on the Backstory of Gus Fring, as he started out in Chile then made his way to Albuquerque as The Chicken Man/Meth Businessman(beyond what was shown briefly on a few episodes of Breaking Bad), as I recall he was deciding between Saul and Gus originally as the Prequel to Breaking Bad, and decided to do the Series focused on Saul(Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman Backstory, and future scenes with Gene, as his New Identity Post Breaking Bad).

I was a little disappointed with the end of Better Call Saul, as was hoping for a more devastating ending like Kim and/or Gene being killed. The deaths of Nacho, Howard and Lalo were awesome though. Tony Dalton was awesome as Lalo in BCS. Too bad he was not around for Breaking Bad, although I recall Saul asking Walt, if Lalo sent him in one episode of Breaking Bad early on with the introduction of Saul , so I was wondering if Lalo was going to survive in BCS.

Shrinking on Apple looks like it could be a winner. Jason Siegel and Harrison Ford. Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso produced it. Premieres Friday

Wife and I started Poker Face last night. It’s on peacock. Lots of big names in the show. Has a little bit of a “psych” feel if you ever watched that show. But pretty good so far. It’s about a casino waitress with ultra perception to tell if someone is lying. She ends up solving crimes. I’d say it is better than how it sounds. If my wife likes something that usually means it’s not too bad.

Yeah and there is a new Justified series coming out soon I believe.
The new Justified series apparently is set in Detroit and is being shot in Canada and Western PA. It’s going to be very hard for it to top the original.

If you haven’t seen Longmire, it’s another very good modern Western series, set in present day Wyoming. It centers around Walt Longmire, an old fashioned county sheriff. Robert Taylor, an Australian actor, plays him, and Lou Diamond Phillips plays Henry Standing Bear, a Cheyenne who is his best friend. It’s on Netflix.

I enjoy seeing Nazis killed as much as anybody. I actually made a loop of the 3 minute scene in Inglorious Bastards where Eli Roth, aka The Bear Jew, sprays about 200 bullets into Hitler. But, I didn’t care for the first season of The Hunters on Prime, and watched it only because of Al Pacino. Season 2 IMO is even worse. I managed to get through the first six episodes because of Pacino and Jennifer Jason Leigh, who is even better. But, it should have ended with Episode 6. I tried to watch a few minutes of Episode 7 but turned it off. Just terrible.

I just can't imagine the new justified series without Boyd crowder.

The Last of US is the one.

For marvel geeks, I think black panther 2 is on Disney+ as early as tomorrow. I’ve been waiting for it, as the reviews kept me from seeing it in the theater and I think things are going to start taking off in a big way when AntMan is released in a couple weeks.

Marvel Phase 4, everything since Avengers Endgame, has been pretty underwhelming to this point, and I hear black panther 2 is no different. But it has to be seen for the whole connectivity to the rest of the content.

Do you really not watch movies based on reviews ?
Wakanda forever is terrific
Especially considering they had to rewrite it after bosman passed

At the risk of offending a very vocal member who doesn’t like British television, if you have Apple or Prime and can subscribe to BritBox and Acorn, which are available on them, you will have a whole world of new opportunities.

There are a lot of excellent non-detective shows from Britain, but they have mastered the art of the detective show. Foyle’s War started the ball rolling and since then there have been Inspector Morse, Endeavor, Shetland, Death In Paradise, Unforgotten, Poiret, Miss Marple, Line of Duty, Whitechapel (set in the time of the Jack The Ripper murders) and many more.

Among the non-detective shows are Downton Abbey and the original The Office, but detective shows are their specialty and they have crime-solving doctors, clergy and others.

One of the best series I ever have watched is the Swedish-Danish series The Bridge. I think it is available on Prime maybe for an extra cost. Not sure where else. The first season was perhaps the best show ever and the next two were great. The fourth and last season was for me a disappointment. The series starts with a severed dead body being found at the halfway point of the main bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo, Sweden, requiring two nations’ police forces to work together. It is even more complex when the body turns out to be two different murder victims: Yhe upper body of one and the lower body of the other. Brilliant show.

Almost as good is the English-French adaption of it m, The Tunnel, where the body/bodies are found on the line in the underground English Channel tunnel between the two nations which marks the border. It’s on Prime. It stars Stephen Dillane (Stannis Baratheon) as the British detective and Clemence Poesy, who is absolutely incredible as the French detective.

There also was a one-year American version on FX1, which is horrible by comparison.

Perhaps you didn’t really read my post. I said I was watching it. I only didn’t see it in the theater based on the reviews and based on every other marvel franchise being a disappointment in this phase. I heard several times that they tried to pack 5 hours and 2 movies worth of story into a movie half the length and it was very sloppy. So I’m choosing to watch from my game room where I can watch and digest in my own way. I was in no hurry to get back to the theater after that Love and Thunder train wreck.

Weird
I like to see movie theater movies in the theater

And it was terrific for those of us who aren't offended or frightened by same sex couples. It should have been humanizing.
One of my recent favorite characters was the gay hotel manager in White Lotus. The gay sex, drug use and defecating in a suitcase were a bit cringe…but that’s what the show runners were certainly going for.

Ok you’re going to have to back that one up. How exactly is that weird? It’s 2023, theaters are struggling. It’s not 1935 where I have to go to the theater to see a film. I can wait.

why is he defecating into a suitcase? was that part of the plot?

we need to have a top 10 list of gay characters on tv/movies. i think that would be a good thread. nothing insulting or homophobic either, just a top 10 list of your favorite gay tv characters..

i think there were iconic characters in the past that were actually part of the story line. now, well now they just add one in every show to be compliant but at one time in cinematic history, the roles made the story better. i know, im old..

yeah, i need to think about this. the obvious one is Cameron in Modern family but that's recent. He makes that show or made it when it was good. the friend in Will in grace was funny at the peak of that show..

didnt billy crystal play a gay character in soap? That was a tad before my time..

Soap was awesome. Yes Billy Crystal was gay, but he wasn’t the stereotypical flamboyant homosexual that Hollywood used in comedy. I don’t remember his character being great. Now his father and brother, the other Campbell men, who were both dumb as rocks, they were great and hilarious.

Jim J Bullock with a girlfriend In too close for comfort was hysterical bc it was so unbelievable. Jack tripper was sort of believable. Interesting that John Ritter played on out of closer gay guy later in sling blade. Great movie.

Paul Lynd was also out and hammered on Hollywood squares

That thread would last approximately 3 posts before it went off the rails. Pretty sure just seeing the thread title would give Chris a hemorrhage.

Armond was one of the most memorable characters ever on tv. Shane drove him to unknown places of horror.

Murray Bartlett and Nick Offermqn killed episode 3 in last of us.

Jim J Bullock and uncle Milty were painful to get watch on Hollywood squares. Bullock was on stern many many years ago and said uncle milty threw every slur at him in the book.

oh man, great great character with John Ritter in Sling Blade. good call.
Ha ha funny or ha ha queer was a tremendous line and Ritters response to it was better. Also when he explained to Carl what gay meant. TreMendous stuff with fresh fried pertaytoes. Grunt
