Pat narduzzi

I want Narduzzi to succeed. I wanted Wanny to succeed. But they both clearly have (similar) limitations, and if Narduzzi is going to succeed he needs to figure out how to overcome his limitations. We are far enough into his tenure that it's far to say that it's a lot more likely that he won't than he will.

Narduzzi = Wannstedt = Cowher = Tomlin. Great motivators. Old school (but in a tried and true sort of way) scheme that works often timess, but completely unable to adapt when it does not work (credit Bates for the small tweaks we have made). Poor game day coaches.

Disagree - We had the momentum and our offense was clicking at that point. It was 3rd and Long. If we stop them, then we get the ball back with a chance to score. Narduzzi was aggressive all game until the FG on 4th down. He should have stuck with the aggressiveness.

I think you would at least have to agree that he should have called a timeout after the Twyman sack. Penn State would not have attempted a field goal that long if there was a risk of us getting the ball back near the 50. When they ran it down to 5 seconds or whatever, there was nothing to lose.

Kind of agree as I said in the OP I didnt like the hire from the beginning because we pretty much got what I expected a good defensive coach, who isnt a great recruiter. I didnt know about his game management because obviously he was never a hc before. I do have some hope that the staff as presently made up is better than his first staff. He has prioritized recruiting in some of his latest hires. But they have to keep whipple for a while and get some guys under him that are capable of taking over if he leaves.

I'm not calling for his head, but going for the field goal was as big of a "play to lose" call that I've ever seen. Given this team, in those circumstances, you go for the touchdown 100 percent of the time and you probably go for two as well. I'd rather lose the game because the other team stopped you or you failed to execute going for a win rather than settling for a field goal still needing to find the end zone and lose.

One touchdown. One incredibly bad decision that no other coach in the country would have made under the same circumstances.

This guy coaches scared. He doesn’t attack and he doesn’t rise to the situation or get his team to do so. He’s just another guy, just like about 100 of the 127 D 1 coaches and below the median in that group. And his results speak for themselves.

On the top of all that, he just isn’t very smart, and it shows.

Out of curiosity, did you want them to punt or go for it from their 48 earlier in that infamous FG on 4th and 1 drive? Because I'll be honest and say I wanted to punt that ball away.

I wanted them to punt the first time but go for it the 2nd. My thinking on the first one was there is still lots of time left and you want to keep it close as long as possible, I just felt like there was to much risk that they make a stop and then use the momentum to get a score. On the second I thought at some point you have to make a play and your getting a little low on time.and I didn't know if the d would respond again. Basically I would have handled it exactly the way pn up until the goal line. If I was calling the game I think you have to at least try one qb sneak

You mean the 4th down we converted from our 45 with like 6 minutes left, on the same possession as the goal line debacle? I definitely wanted to go for it given the time left in the game, the way our D was playing, and the fact we weren’t moving the ball well in the second half and we couldn’t count on getting it back with enough time to get in the end zone. The play call there was perfect and I would have had no complaints about the call if it failed. The only way that TE pop play doesn’t work in that down and distance situation is a bad throw or a drop. If we’d had Orndorff or Holtz on the other end of that we very well might’ve scored. As it was it was a great call and a well executed play that worked to perfection.

Now The 4th and 2 we punted on from the 48 with over 11 minutes left was the right call IMO. Pin em deep and trust the defense to do its job in that situation.

I also support Whipple calling for a pass play on 1st and goal from the one-just not the type of play he called. It’s the best down and distance to take advantage of a defense that has to overcommit to stop the inside run. I’m a believer in erring on the aggressive side, especially on the road against a rival.

What happened on the 3 plays after that was an epic coaching failure. The decision to kick was one of the dumbest ever made in a major college football game. The attempted explanation for it was even dumber. The fans that are giving Duzz a pass for that should have their heads examined. It was pure idiocy, everyone in America knows it and he’s being panned for the decision and his post-game explanation for it from coast to coast. This is his 5th year as a head coach so he doesn’t get the benefit of the rookie mistake excuse.

There were some positives from the game especially the D and the way KP threw the ball, but positive takeaways are what the losing team is left with after a loss. A win is the only truly positive takeaway in any sport.

Hire on the cheap non-experienced head coach coordinators and 99% of the time you get what you see. We are better than this.
No we aren't. We've been irrelevant for 80 years aside from 5-6 season 40 years ago.

This is true, other than that glorious run in the mid 70’s to very early 80’s this program has been an afterthought nationally since the late 30’s.

Deemphasis has crushed this program on multiple occasions.

I agree. Pitt has to go away from coordinators with its next hire. However Narduzzi was nationally recognized as a top coordinator in the country. Remember the we cured polio we should be able to win ten football games quote? In that regard it wasn’t as if he was pulled off the scrap heap. Sometimes inexperienced coordinators work out. Just not in this case.

He has to have two losing (no bowl) seasons to get fired. Not my personal opinion on if he should be fired. I just know they are not going to fire a coach after a winning season like Pedey did with Wannstedt.
