Pickett to Pickens

I’m hoping the return of Johnson will help also. The OL stinks but the play calling has got to be better. If you are always 3rd and long, the opposition is going to tee off and go after Pickett. You have to keep the defense honest. Throw on first down. Mixed the plays up on 2nd down. It’s too predictable.

A handoff behind terrible run blocker Chuks on 2nd and 7+ is canada's hallmark

It's weird how these billion dollar organizations think. If Pickens doesn't score that long TD Canada might get fired tomorrow. But because we got that all is well for him now, as if the offense wasn't miserable most of the game.

There was one run for Harris behind Jones/Washington and it picked up like 10 yards. I thought they would keep going this way. Nope, keep running to the right and weak run blocking side of the line.

Pickens has mastered the art of the subtle push off. hey, it's not a penalty if they dont call it..

I was gonna say this but if you look at it from the end zone camera's shot, he doesn't actually push off at all. He sticks his arm out, doesn't even fully extend it, and kinda girly slaps with a flick of his wrist at Humphrey's collar and that's it. He didn't grab and hold off, or push

well it gave him seperation and we won the game on it and like i said, if they dont call it, it's not a penalty.. AB was great at this too.

I believe this as well. Let me be clear, Kenny has not played well either. But I think some coaching would help him become a better QB.

At this point the only reason to play Harris over Warren is because Harris has "first round draft pick" attached to his name.
Yeah, I was actually pissed off at all the wasted downs, leading to 3rd and long, just to give him more failed touches.

To me, that TD is close to meaningless, OTHER THAN WINNING THIS GAME, BFD! and this is aimed at Canada and Kenny, So what? after failing for the first 58:45, and also no TDs for SEVEN QUARTERS, YOU FINALLY did, what a good NFL offense and QB should do 3-4 or 5 times PER GAME.

And some routes in the middle of the field, most of the time he's throwing to covered receivers near the sideline trying to make contested catches.

im ok with the occasional back shoulder throw to pickens but it seems like we are trying it 4-5 times a game. it's something that you try occasionally, not be a staple of your offense. especially since pickens doesnt really understand the concept of it and he just keeps running..

Bit of a face turn by Kaboly. He always takes jabs at Pitt and was critical of Pickett the moment they drafted him (not at Dulac or Madden levels). But listening to him last night also on the KDKA sports showdown and he was actually the voice of reason in regards to Pickett.

And I wonder if you switched Purdy for Pickett what the results would be. So yeah definitely coaching but also look who Pickett was throwing to yesterday. Freiermuth and Johnson both out. Thank goodness for Pickens.

Someone needs to be the voice of reason in regards to Pickett… actually Steelers QBs in general … Stiller fans can be entirely irrational and impatient with QB development… I’ve seen it over and over and over.

That’s the rub. Everyone really needs to be on the same page. But when executed correctly/precisely it’s nearly impossible to defend.

Do you know when Johnson is supposed to return?

This is a frustrating thing with Kenny. There are much better QBs who put up nice numbers but fold in crunch time. In a seasons worth of starts, Pickett has a bit of that clutch gene, but he sure can stink for 3.5 quarters. If the Steelers hired a real OC before drafting him we'd have a much better idea about Pickett right now.

So predictable. I’d rather take my chances to pop a 10 or 15 yard pass play, even if that means a potential incomplete pass. Runs in that situation average a yard at best.

It is very frustrating…. The potential for him to play better is there. He has intangibles that you can’t teach. He’s a:

* Hard worker. Whether it’s on the practice field or the film room.

* Natural leader.

* Winner. He has the “it” factor. He rises to the occasion in clutch situations.

A lot of his problems can be remedied with a better OL play, a better running game, a healthy WR corps and above all better play calling…

When those are addressed his pocket presence, progression, and accuracy will improve.

Franchise QB is an over used term. A franchise QB is a player that can overcome the weaknesses around him and carry a team to a championship. He is not that. But he can be a good QB that helps the Steelers win games and make the playoffs and if the stars align win a Super Bowl trophy.

If he’s only changing the protection, then why the glum reaction from Canada? There can only be two reasons. He doesn’t want the Steelers to win or he didn’t call the play. I have my doubts this is true.
I think too much is being made over Canada's reaction.

Any celebratory reaction for his offense finding the end zone for the first time all day, with under 2 minutes left in the game, would probably be met with extreme ridicule as well. I think he was well aware of that.

Twitter is a cesspool. but this has to be one of the dumber things to circulate on that platform. Most likely Canada was thinking about whether to go for 2 and which play to call rather than jumping for joy. I like that he was focused, although I don't like Canada

everyone knows PIckett audibled out of it, i mean that's a no brainer. it is a curious reaction though from Canada. QBs audible all the time, Ben pretty much was the OC 1/2 of his career in pittsburgh so not sure why an OC would feel "insulted" by it..

If you give your qb the ability to call audibles, you cant be upset when they do and it works. in reality, maybe he's just not in a good mood because 50 thousand steeler fans were chanting "Fire Canada" for most of the 2nd half. that would be tough on the ego man..

Even pat mcafee show had a laugh on the subject.

It’s a human reaction (or lack of reaction in his case).

We’d like to think coaches are above the human bias and agendas that fans have, but you see and hear the opposite all the time.

Duz often lamented when his team would win on great offense. He said it “sickened” him (and he meant it) when Pitt scored 77 points in a game. He fired Whipple after the guy just largely engineered Duz’s only championship season. He has bias (to a fault) for his defense.

Canada is clearly similar in that regard. He wants “his” play that is called to be the cause for victory. This situation exposed that one of the few positive Offensive plays was due to the QB essentially saying “nah, his call will suck like every other one has in this game so far” and he changed it. Canada hated that at least as much as he liked (we hope!) that the successful audible won the game (though the team seemed determined to try to give it back with its abysmal clock management at the end…was any of THAT fiasco on Canada?)
