Pirates In First Place and The Place is Empty??

The ultimate goal of playing more than one playoff game?
Ultimate goal is to win the World Series, we fell short. Still think we were much better then mediocre 4 of the last 5 years.

So in your mind, everything less than a championship is a failure? You better find a new team to root for cause pitt isn’t winning a championship in any sport anytime in the next 50 years.

What is going on in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates are off to a great start and PNC Park is empty like I mean really empty???

It's Masters weekend so what there's not that many golfers in PIttsburgh, its a little cold, so what Mrs Buffett and I played golf at 8:15 this morning and it was 29 F when we teed off. No frost delay what a break!

This is one reason why PITT has trouble getting coaches. A winning first place team and the place MLB Pro team in a Pro town is a ghost town!
The fans are terrible!

So why aren’t you at the game ?

College football has a reasonable postseason, baseball doesn't. Having a good year then winning a bowl game is enjoyable. Watching baseball all summer then ending up in a wild card game is ridiculous. I'll pass, Nutting doesn't spend enough to win a pennant.

Sit out a few rounds, stupid.
Agreed. Nothing fun about golfing in flurries sounds fun. I like golf in overcast with light rain, keeps the old heads off the course and allows for a 2 1/2 hour round. But this weather? Screw that noise.

The last 4 years, I thought we were a hell of alit better then mediocre. Last year sucked but 3+ years before that, we were damn good. Fell short of the ultimate goal but regular season was fun.

As a pitt basketball fan under Dixon, I’ve learned to discount such trivial things like post season and focus only on regular season success.
In other words, you've created your own reality that runs counter to what the rest of the world believes so as to enjoy your Pittsburgh sporting experience....

As is your right. You even have the right to post in every pirate thread how you aren’t rooting for them and hate ownership and can add in the obligatory statement how you were always a fan but no more. I mean, those posters are painfully annoying, nothing more than a troll with the sole intent to ruin everyone’s good mood but this is your right.

GOOD! FINALLY a hateful reaction to Nutting not spending! I don't care if they win 90 and get into the wild card game, THAT'S A FAILURE, because all it means is maybe they could of won 100 if they had spent big money the winter after winning 98 like you're supposed to. For a crappy small market team, that is when you spend and they didn't so F'em, glad people aren't going. Baseball is the worst sport anyways, boring as hell.

People hate basebsll and hate the pirates yet feel obliged to jump into every pirate/baseball thread. Why?

I hate soccer, would rather pour gas into my eyeballs than watch it so when there is a soccer thread on here guess what I do? I ignore it. But I’m a classy guy and that’s what classy people do.

In other words, you've created your own reality that runs counter to what the rest of the world believes so as to enjoy your Pittsburgh sporting experience....

On a serious note, Del, it's not creating a separate reality. It's appreciating and enjoying the totality of a season.

Was I disappointed that the Pirates didn't win the world series? Of course I was. But watching the win 98 games is the most fun I've had in my lifetime as a fan of Pirates and of baseball. Similarly, I was crushed when Pitt lost to 'Nova. But that loss didn't erase all the fun I had watching my team beat #1 UCONN twice.

Obviously we all want postseason success for our teams. But if that is all someone cares about or the only way it can validate a season, then what's the point of even watching?

Maybe that's why I'm such a NBA guy now. I don't have a team. I don't have to get into these tedious arguments justifying my engagement with my team or the game. I just watch the games because they're crazy fun.

No, I just get lots of joy out of bashing baseball, because to some people it's "un American" like pissing on the flag. I don't even know what classy means? I've asked people to explain it, and nobody can. But there is a difference between me bashing baseball and you bashing soccer, you never liked soccer and I grew up playing and a fan of baseball, then just one day, I remember, watching a baseball playoff game in the '80s and having an epiphany... like.... WHY THE F AM I WATCHING THIS CRAP? and I remember flipping the channel to "Dynasty" and never looking back. lol. Actually, I LOVE the Pirates, but hate baseball, the Pirates playoff games are the only baseball games I've watched on TV between 1992 and today. And I used to hate soccer too, until I watched it and learned it and realized how much better it is than baseball and realized then, that I only hated it because that's what REAL MURICANS do, lol.

Yeah yeah, you are from Europe and you hate American culture, we get it. We’ve heard it before. Yet you still call it your home so must not be too bad.

No one said hating baseball is un-American, no one compared it to pissing on the flag. Quit making up crap to justify your stance. You don’t like it, own that and don’t feel the need to create an opposition that doesn’t exist to support your agenda.

Baseball is the National Pastime...
As Babe said the greatest game ever.

The only really watchable thing about Soccer is EPL...and 80% of that is because the pre, post and halftime shows are damn entertaining...
Also luv the drama queens , managers and players alike

What’s cool is when they’re flopping around like a tuna fish on the field then helped off or carried off on a stretcher....on a play where a hockey player would just skate over to the bench and get ready for his next shift.....

You reap what you sow. For how many years now have when the Pirates make a trade, it always involves little in return and always followed by Huntingdon using the phrase "financial flexibility".

And then...poof, it is like that "financial flexibility" disappears in cloud of smoke.

Trading Cutch and Cole are not the reasons, they were just the tipping point of "enough is enough".

That being said, they are off to a great start, fun to watch. I don't think this lasts, and with each 1 hit Shut Out by Taillon I wonder what team he will be pitching for in a few years...

Exactly. There could be nothing enjoyable about playing golf here the past two weeks.

That’s ok, let’s get their best years here in Pittsburgh and get rid of them when their salary exceeds their production like we did with cutch.
You mean like Gerrit Cole?? His best years are ahead of him, he could win the AL Cy Young this year

golf is down, has to be. im talking like the last 5-10 years. I drive by courses all the time and see no one playing. I haven't seen a golfer on South Hills golf course in like 5 years, the one in Baldwin. even south park municipal course, I don't see anyone playing. this course, I used to go out on sunday in high school and play it, it would be a 6 hour round there were so many damn people playing on this course and now, I drive by on a Saturday at noon in the summer and I may see a few people but that's it.

kind of a shame but I get it, too time consuming. wife/girlfriend nags the hell out of you for being gone all day on a Saturday, not worth the headache. golf is a single man's game.

no, I don't mean like him, I said Cutch, not Cole. definitely would have liked to have Gerrit cole on our roster, he's a head case but he's got "ace" stuff..

im not a nutting apologist here, by any means.

LOL ?

We're out of towner's who travel to all PITT home games ( 600+miles rt).

Mrs Buffett and I spend a ton of money on hotels, drinks, food , and other fabulous Pittburgh entertainment, we purchase Center Ice to watch the PENS, Sunday Ticket to watch the Steelers and MLB Extra innings to watch the Pirates.
Add all that up, atending games etc. it comes to about $ 6k.
Our kids went to PITT and live in Pittsburgh so we connected!
Pirates fans still su-k
We're more invested in your teams than you people are???

GO TO THE GAMES!

Bet that...stopped playing long ago when rounds started going over 5 hours...can’t do that on a weekend when door to door it can be 6 plus hours and you have a family....

Momma ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy...

F’g guys lining up putts like it’s the Masters...players lost all knowledge of course common sense, etiquette etc.

when as a kid we took up the game....if you were on pace for 4plus hours., golf balls were aimed at your arse from the group in back.

At it again but only when no one is in front .

I understand your point and I am not so jaded as to discount completely regular season results ..... at some point, however, when a team keeps bumping its head against the same ceiling, as a fan I don’t believe it’s either unusual or unreasonable to want and expect your team to take the next step, and I believe that more often than not, consistent regular season success and post season failure indicates a team/ program has a problem whether it be talent or coaching. As s fan of such a team, you expect the team to address that problem.... that’s why sports are competitive endeavors ...it’s ultimately about striving to be the best

Oh dude, it is hugely down. Courses and country clubs are being shuttered almost daily. I always say that, "I drive by XXXX course and there is no one playing". Or if you see guys on the course, 75% of the time, they are retirees.

Kids really don't play it at all. Millenials don't play. It is not cool enough. I don't play much either, and I am in sales. People don't play. It is amazing, with cell phones and laptops, you would think it frees up people to be more flexible with their time to allow people to pursue leisurely activities, but no, we have less time than ever.

Then there is the big thing. When I was a kid, and the immediate decade after me, kids were kids and did kids things, with coaches. Now? Whatever the kids are doing, the parents have to be a part of it. Every practice, every game, they have to be there. No wonder why kids are so self absorbed, parents nowadays when they have kids, they sign their lives away to only doing things for their kids. And kids today, you can't have a little league with local kids sponsored by local businesses, or even a local school playing other local schools, you have to be part of "traveling" teams.

I don't know how many times I ask a buddy or someone if they want to do something, and it is "no, we are going to Indianapolis this weekend because there is a cheer competition for little Suzie" or "we are going to Rochester this weekend for a volleyball tourneyment for little Billy". I am like, ;THEY ARE 12 YEARS OLD!! Cant they find a volleyball match close by? It is a money grab in many respects. But seriously, this consumes so much time of 30-40 year old adults instead of golfing, etc.... And parents fill compelled to, they are horrible parents if they don't.

Some token pity bowl for a 6-6 team is not an enjoyable or rewarding season.

Do you enjoy your Pitt sports experience?
The Pirates can go 9-3 and still get the tire bowl 3 years in a row. Major difference. Being a Pitt fan is tougher than most P5 schools, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure that out. It doesn't mean we have to be slaphappy pirates regular season junkies.

Yes. But everyone, whether they were fans of baseball or not, knew Cole wasn't going to sign with the Pirates once his contract was up. Whether that's a statement about the Pirates, the economics of baseball, or both, the Pirates were right to try and get value for him.

amen to all of this.. dude's playing in jean shorts, holding a can of beer, lining up their putt like it's the masters, lol. because if he misses it, he'll shoot a 103 instead of a 102, better take your time. I just saw you pick up your ball out of the sand trap and throw it in the grass, and NOW you are going to line up a putt like it's important?

these same types are the ones who are 230 yards out and waiting for the foursome in front to putt out and leave the green before they hit because one time in 1995, he "Stuck" the green with his 3 wood. sure enough, he Thurmon Munson's it (dead yank) into the woods.

no it's not, its realistic. pitt isnt' winning a NC in football in my lifetime, im 41.. I know this, accept it, and am fine with it.. I want to compete in ACC, hopefully get 1 ACC championship game per decade, that's my goal for pitt football.

Nothing wrong with living on planet earth. Bocci is something I want to get into. I feel like I have to be old and Italian to have any realistic shot of this happening though. I kid you not, I would really like to play bocci.
