Pitt’s new on campus football stadium

I’ve hoped that Pitt could get its hands on the SciTech site for decades now. It’s such a bigger footprint that in seems from street level - it’s the size of the entire Schenley Quad, and you could probably fit 1000+ student beds in that footprint without any real creativity at all.
Really, its also a cool historic building. Could use if for a lot of things, but that is a good idea for residence hall. Built in gym/rec center, right? Could be an engineering honors housing facility. Don't know if Pitt will ever get it though. Can't have enough historic buildings.

Like the Syria Mosque?

I recall a private group being interested in building a stadium adjacent to PITT/CMU campus in central Oakland about 6 years ago. It was closer to Schenley park but the University balked at it.

There’s a pool inside too.
But you aren’t going to move one of the most successful PPS magnet schools

I believe the Pete was a mistake, I also believe that it would have been the perfect place for a 50,000 seat on campus football stadium. Would have been easier to find a place for basketball

The Pete is too big. We arent ever going to fill it consistently again unless we are National Championship contender. Its over 20 years old now. Had we not built the volleyball arena, I would have said when the Pete hits 30-35 years old, to rip it down to build a football stadium and then build an 8000 or 9000 seat arena somewhere else on campus like maybe the Syria Mosque site.

You do realize the Pete is a functional building used by students and events outside the athletic circle, yes?

That's because they are a NC contender and tickets are $5. Pitt basketball tickets are very expensive. If you wanted to buy a single game ticket to the Point Park exhibition game last night, it was $30. Ohio State charges $11 for their worst seats to Big Ten games and $8 for the cupcakes.

Where in the world did they think they were going to put it? I doubt it was the university that balked. My guess is that this private group did the math and realized it would be a financial boondoggle and no investors signed on.

Point Park tickets were $10 in the upper deck for the general public; $5 for existing season ticket holders. Sometimes I forget why I shouldn't reveal my ignore list.

My guess is that their MS paint job failed to convince any serious person outside of a message board.

If you want the cheapeat ticket in the house for the cupcake games, its $18, which includes fees. While that's not that expensive, its also not cheap enough to attract any more than 2 or 3 single game buyers. I mean, I get it. Pitt isnt in the business of selling single game tickets but when the arena is empty for all but 5 games per year and for whats become a pretty good program again, that's a problem.

The spot for a stadium is already there, and it's called the Peterson Sports Complex. I don't think it's a coincidence that they jammed 3 fields together in the shape of a football field.

Another 15-20 years when the Steelers have had enough of Heinz and the Peterson Sports Complex starts showing it's age, that will be the time when Pitt will need to decide if they have the want/will to build it. Move baseball and softball while soccer plays in the new stadium.

Soccer cant play in a new stadium because you cant put soccer lines on a football field. That looks too high school-ish. There isnt 1 D1 stadium who does that.

Assuming Presby doesn’t continue its expansion .

You ignore the REALITY that the cost of everything has gone through the roof. And we did just fine during the Big East era with a strong coach. You'll see it doing well now that Capel has figured it out. Most FB-leaning schools are like us. tOSU last had a good hoops team was about 20 years ago??? They don't care.
The cost of tickets isn't a problem....folks pay $100K for toxic taxis.

I think it involved CMU also playing at the facility, a pro soccer franchise, and a concert venue rolled into one. You can't be all things to all people.

CMU has an on-campus stadium, why would they play at this thing?

We drew well in the Big East because we were always a NC contender. When we dropped off in the late Dixon years, the place started to get pretty empty. Capel has had back to back NCAAT-worthy teams and attendance has been pretty bad. This year's team is thought to potentially be his best. And my guess is attendance is still going to be a problem.

I guess in a perfect world, maybe CMU moves up to FCS and the Patriot League and then you can build a 45K seat stadium near the CMU campus that can be shared by Pitt, CMU, and an MLS team. I know people will say why would we go from sharing with the Steelers to sharing with CMU and soccer but for me, its not really about who else is on the lease or where the stadium is located. Acrisure is just too big and it kills the gameday environment.

I can't speak for CMU but it would open up the stadium area to build more dorms/classrooms and the spot was right next to CMU right by Panther Hollow.

So you don't care about the location of the stadium?? Ya think there's room for parking?? No tailgating ??
With all the crazy happenings in college sports NO school should make ANY big project right now.
You're also ignoring Pitt's intention to grow the student body.
The North Shore is now the biggest entertainment space by a big way. Pitt fans bitch about yellow seats. Pretending that we're as big as some other schools is stupid. The current setup is as good as we get.

Pitt has virtually no tailgate scene as it is. There are many reasons NOT to build an on-campus stadium. But tailgating on the North Shore isnt one.

Let me know when Victory Heights is finished and paid then you might be able to think about a stadium. Maybe😂

i still to this day find it soo aggravating walking into the stadium at a pitt game and seeing Gold 1A and even Gold 2, over 70% empty. Prime real estate for tailgating on a saturday afternoon and the lot 200' from the gates are empty. I never understood that..

Maybe its just me growing up a steeler fan and seeing what tailgating meant and still means to steeler fans. it's literally just as important (If not more) than the actual game. A part of steelers culture that just goes unnoticed for the most part with pitt fans..

anyone that goes to a steeler home game, you go down 3+ hours early. I dont care if you are 20 or 80, it's just what you do and what you've always done. While pitt fans roll up 15 minutes before kickoff. Just weird to me.

Pitt fans are there for the game. They are there for football. Steeler fans are there to get wasted. The game is just a nice extra beneft to getting drunk out of your mind. Totally different culture.

Yes, it is a coincidence, because it was the shape of the plot on the Robinson Court public housing was located and that didn't change. Pitt was unable to acquire adjacent property it wanted. It was a 10 year political fight to get what they did. Cramming three fields on that plot was not easy. Not sure Pitt is in the ACC without it though.

what a blessing it was for that section 8 / public housing garbage to go away for pitt to expand. always thought how truly pathetic it was for that to be so close to pitt's athletic facilities.

Could be sooner. I don’t think baseball and/or softball are going to survive with this new administration. That’s a lot of unused space if it happens.

Some Pitt fans that I know who are big into tailgating for Pitt are more into the tailgate than the game -- and sometimes don't even bother to come into the stadium. Or if they do, the 1st quarter is already over.
