Despite hundreds of posts calling for Dixon's head, Pitt still got 38 AP votes and is ranked 23rd by the coaches.

Since a few posters contrasted faltering Dixon with rising Narduzzi, I checked the last football polls: zero votes and zero votes. Amazing how people view these sports with wildly different expectations.

levance - late last night I posted a "New Polls" thread and predicted: "I'm guessing about 27 in AP and 25 in Coaches." I guess I missed it by "that much" . . . all in all, I think it's pretty a fair representation of where we are at this moment. And despite what I commented the other day - about programs such as Duke getting the "benefit of the doubt" when it comes to ranking and perhaps seeding - I think that's all the polls can measure right now.

I'm not sure how others feel, but this year's grouping of teams in the Top 25 would indicate that nearly every one of them is capable of getting beat by an un-ranked team, or peer within the Top 25. UNC barely escaped Blacksburg with a win. ND won at Duke and lost to us at home. I watched KU and Okla play and neither looks invincible - WVU, which has a decent team, gave both of them all they wanted to handle. Give me a favorite right now for the NCAA's, and if I'm a Vegas Sports Book, I am anxious to take your $$

Dixon clearly needs to tweet more.

I definitely think Pitt is in a fine position to finish with a tourney berth, but unfortunately they are almost surely dropping out of the polls in the next couple weeks.

Week 0: @Clemson, VT
Week 1: UVa
Week 2: @Miami, @UNC

They basically just have to avoid getting totally slaughtered in that period and keep enough confidence to win the games down the stretch (which they failed to do last year). The last 5 games of the year are predicted to be decided by 5 points or fewer.

Repeating Moe's observation the 15-25 teams will be taking some loses as well. Get hot during this stretch and we can move up.

The main reason I feel better about this years version is that we replaced 2 walk ons and Randall with the 3 grad transfers and Newkirk with Wilson. We also have a healthy Cam and Jeter and Luther look to be a bit improved. We have depth, which we had none of last year. How many more wins does this translate to? That's what we find out over the next few weeks.

The Coaches are still showing respect at least....

Do you think both programs have had an equal opportunity in their respective sports?

How many on campus football stadiums get demolished to build a state of the art basketball arena and aren't replaced?

Was a Pitt football coach ever top 10, 20, 30 paid coach in his sport?

How does the football funding compare to Other schools?

Btw Pitt football was ranked this year and ended unranked: let's wait and see what happens with the basketball team.

They are better. But top to bottom I think the acc is better. No easy outs think we get in because Dixon won't have collapses in back to back years and he can traditionally out coach similarly talented team. But we likely won't be any higher than an 8-9 seed again because I think we lose at least 5-6 of our remaining games

I think you are probably right about the losses, the seeding has too many factors involved to say for sure. Other than maybe a couple teams, nobody seems particularly infallible this year. We could be anywhere 6-12, depending on how we do the rest of the way, and how a lot of other teams do the rest of the year. Brackets will be tough for sure this year.

ok, gtfo wacko

The short answer is, compared to peers, both football and basketball have been supported financially by the administration substantially.

Hoops has had a better return on investment ( Ie revenue generation compared to university expenses spent).

Pitt hoops is among the top profitable programs nationally.
Pitt football barely made a profit until the acc revenue dump over several years.

In other words, fans have supported hoops with their wallets more than football.
That's just the truth.
Pitt has allocated plenty of resources to football.
The fans have refused to answer the Bell for decades.

I'm not saying you're lying but I personally don't believe that to be true. I'd like to see numbers.

I know coaching staff budgets, recruiting expenses, up until this year facility upgrades lagged way behind the blue bloods and even behind many other power 5 schools concerning football. While Pitt basketball was at least top 30 in overall funding. The question at the moment isn't really who has a better return of investment it's who has equal chance of being successful. And the football program wasn't turning a profit before the acc? Well, we were in a basketball conference before that something else I should have pointed out in my previous post.

Thanks for proving my point. If you're still interested in beating dead horses, the football board is very welcoming.
