Pittsburgh Steelers Select Sam Darnold, QB, USC

Let it go. You are making an ass of yourself. And besides, there is no way of telling if Darnold, or any other top QB is the second coming of Peyton Manning or the second coming of Ryan Leaf.

-That's the value of a Top flight QB. All your superbowl winning QB's, almost all of them went 1st or 2nd round except Tom Brady in recent history

-The 2 Manning's, Big Ben, Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees. That's 10 recent superbowl winners with a high 1st round QB choice.

-Then you have Brady, a total system player created by Billichieck, and Russel Wilson when Seattle has has a Top 2 defense in the league for about 5 years now. That's it, no one else is winning titles these days. Your title winning teams are led by high 1st round NFL QB draft picks outside New England.

-So obviously Pittsburgh better make a move to get a high 1st round NFL QB, or we arent winning squat when Ben retires.

5 of the top 10 rated QBs in 2017 were drafted in the 2nd round or later. 1 was drafted in the second half of the 1st round and 4 were drafted in the top 10 picks. If the Steelers play their cards right and start looking for Big Ben's eventual replacement starting with this year's draft (not saying they need to draft him this year, they just need to be ready to jump if something to their liking falls to them). If they scout well, there is a fair chance they can get a pretty good QB.

Brees, Rodgers and Flacco were not high 1st rounders.

Because we know that's the type of ship the Rooneys run lol. We have a better chance of seeing God than seeing the Rooneys trade away that many draft picks for one player.

-We traded multiple draft picks to Kansas City to move up from 29th to 16th to get Troy Polamalu. I would say that worked out well since the Chiefs got Larry Johnson, a player that was arrested 6 different times while in the league.

Notice I said that many, as in referring to trading the whole lot. And to further make my point, if it took multiple draft picks to just go from 29 to 16 ....and that cost a 1st,3rd,and a 6th.
It's just not the way the Rooneys roll.

Ben is one of the all-time greats and he still has 5-6 years left.

After 50 years of mostly exceptional and consistent player personnel decisions I have the utmost confidence that the Steelers will adequately weather the post-Ben landscape. This includes not doing something ridiculous like trading an entire draft for a player or draft pick. How did that work out for the Vikings with Herschel Walker or the Saints with Ricky Williams?

-Our Selections for QB play since Bradshaw retired have been beyond terrible. Mark Malone, Bubby Brister, Kordell Stewart, Tommy Maddox, Mike Tomczak. We got some mileage with O'Donnell. Then we take Ben 11th overall and start winning Superbowls again. We've been competitive for years because of defense. But our QB selections have been poor outside Big Ben. Waiting for the last minute for a replacement QB then scrambling like Cleveland does is not the answer.

I'm not debating past anything. I am simply stating that if you've lived in Pittsburgh for any amount of time, you know the likeliness of the Rooneys giving up any large amount of draft picks to move from our *typical* drafting spot of 20's to 30's to top 5 is highly unlikely based on past history.

Now if you want to talk about the ego-centric owner/gm of the Dallas cowboys I'm on board.

And yet, suggesting the Steelers trade Bell, Brown, and picks for a QB is definitely something the Browns would do.

How successful would a QB be with no weapons?

-Its actually perfect. Brown's contract is up in 2018, Bell's in 2017. Give Bell a 1 year extension to bank the trade so we dont break the bank to keep either of these players long term.

You realize that unless you have those guys signed to contracts they aren't worth anything in trade, right? You realize that if you don't sign Antonio Brown to an extension this year he is a free agent when you are proposing to trade him, right? You realize that if you give Bell a one year extension that he would also be a free agent when you are proposing to trade him, right?

Oh, wait, I see who posted this. Forget it. You don't realize.

The Steelers seem to gamble a bit more under Art II than under Dan Rooney. It's going to be so difficult to replace Ben because there are few pro-style offenses in college developing pocket passers these days and the spread guys can be shaky.

Crazy how the Steelers were able to get Ben at 11 considering in 2003 the defense blew three late-game leads after the offense went for the go-ahead TD. That 6-10 record could have been 9-7 and thankfully the defense faltered when it did.

-Perfect replacement for Big Ben in 2 more years. This kid has it, big time has it. My goodness is he so much better than anyone else. Dam can he pass. Wow.
I like him too, but don't discount the talent USC surrounds their QB's with and then watch them not make a great transition to the NFL from Pat Haden to Rob Johnson, Rodney Peete, Paul McDonald, Sean Salisbury, Matt Leinart, Todd Marinovich, Pete Beathard, John Booty, and even Carson Palmer.

I prefer a QB like Terry Bradshaw from Louisana Tech or Big Ben from MAC and Wentz from North Dakota State than a Pedigree Top QB Recruits surrounded by 60 to 70 Top Recruits all around them?

Johnson, Leinart and Sanchez are three of the biggest jokes to play QB in the NFL. Sanchez has been comically bad since 2011 and was terrible last week versus the Eagles. Palmer hands down is the best player on this list and he grew up part of his life in Fresno, so he avoided the Orange County softness that infected Johnson, Leonard, Marinovich and Sanchez.

What can I say, that you haven't? I like 6'4" or 6'5" QBs that had great QBs Coaches in College and learn the game under them with not as much talent around them. few recall but Big Ben went to Walt Harris's QB camps in the summers, Flacco coached by Walt too. Paul Chryst, Bill O'Brien and Joe Tiller all were great QB Coaches.

It was kind of the opposite of Joe Paterno that preferred his QBs to be Ok but made the Players around them on Offense and Defense play better for the entire Team and not rely on one Top QB. One could see the PENN STATE NFL Busts later at many positions that came from his Great Teams but could not transition into being great in the NFL unlike in College. Joe Paterno was like Franklin a QB in College too, but that did show up in the NFL Talent?

Kerry Collins was maybe the best PSU QB all time and did good in the NFL, but Blackledge, Morelli, Robinson, Clark, Fusina, Lucas, and Shaffer, all got the job done in CFB but did not do well in the NFL except Collins that lasted a long time.

I still like Hackenberg and he is still still developing so we shall see. Spread QBs don't usually play that well in the NFL either, so PSU QBs in the future may struggle again in the NFL.

USC has the opposite problem many great QBs but many Players around them too that make them look better than expected in the NFL?

Great QBs OCs make great QBs for the NFL and the more Talent around them the more it hides their own struggles. Always exceptions of course.
