Is it possible that Narduzzi didn’t start Duggar in order to keep him hidden? This is a real concern in this era of CFB. Duggar is now on other teams’ radar and has some NIL leverage with Pitt.

I understand your thinking. However, if the coaches knew Dugger was capable, he would've been used in specific packages late in the season.

Fair enough, but that happens everywhere. Why was Holstein behind Milroe, Simpson, Buchner, and Lonergan?
That's probably a Iot of talented players on the Alabama squad. It makes it a little tougher to decide the pecking order...

How many talented QB's did Pitt have? Holstein? Yarnell, and who else? A smart OC would see the skill set and find a way to use Duggar. At least for 4 games so he doesn't burn his red shirt... It's not like the roster was loaded with talent like Alabama..

Putting that aside, The coaches had three weeks plus to evaluate the the QB's for the bowl game. They looked at Lynch and Duggar and then decided to use Lynch???? Are they blind??? That's what really burns me up....

Those are all fair points. Seems crazy after watching yesterday's game that Lynch was ahead of Duggar.

Yeah, but the OC is not making the decision who is 1st, 2nd, 3rd team QB. Its Nard. For one, Dugger is not the kind of QB Nard likes. He wants pro-style QBs.

Nard is too much old school thinking. That is the reason Pitt is not getting a lot of the decent offensive players, other than maybe RB. Pitt can be better, but they need to get a HC who is young, and can relate to players, and be willing to get out and promote Pitt, suckup to the donors, and the Pittsburgh community. Nard could care less about the donors or dealing with the community or high school coaches.

Pitt needs to find a way to get him out. With NIL and buying players, you have to have a HC willing to except it, and embrace it. Nard is not willing to go all in, and Pitt will continue to suffer the consquences. And the argument that getting him out will cause all the players to leave, and set Pitt back, does not hold water. Pitt has already been set back. Going 3 and 9 last year, and losing 6 straight to end the season, is a huge set back for Pitt.

Yep. This program was reeling after last season. We then win 7 in a row to start the season, and this guy proceeds to completely squander any momentum by dumping the last 6. The Duzz has shown this work is too much for him. Kenny Pickett and Jordan Addison ain't happening again for him. This program is mired in rudderless mediocrity. Recruiting and x's and o's aren't his strong suit. You don't get good players or win games by writing on a little notebook!

You kidding? Narduzzi barely makes any decisions on offense. He said as much last season. He finally intervened with Jurkovec, but that was all Cignetti according to the Great and Powerful Duzz. He even let Powell decide which running backs would play, which led to the inexplicable playing of C'Bo over Hammond. Narduzzi is a defensive coordinator who makes about $5.7M too much.

I don't know if he's against dual threat QBs, because we've struck out on recruiting about 100 of them over the years. But I'm sure pre-2010 Big Ten football is his sweet spot/comfort zone. And that doesn't just go for style of play, unfortunately, which is why we're pretty much just watching the fuse burn down until we can dump him.

The fans of this team are pretty upset that the fuse, while burning, is about 4 years too long!

No one is going to have a deep QB room ever again. The moment a kid gets recruited over he is gone. Even if he isn't recruited over, if he is any good or has a pedigree, he is gone. Even if a kid is a starter, in most schools, they could be gone.

They consistently do this. This is an ongoing theme. They don’t evaluate about play they just play favorites instead of actually coaching and seeing on the practice field who is better. A joke.

This is true.

You’re clueless brah.

Lol. Keep thinking Pat hid Dugger and you never even consider how all along he had David Lynch intentionally throw that pick 6. The same David Lynch that no one even bothered to realize was the bastard son of Tom Brady. But y’all was so focused on Dugger that you never even noticed. M. Night Shyamalan got nothing on Pat. By the time they all catch up, “Lynch” Brady will already have Pitt in the playoff final bitches!

I think the simplest answer is that Narduzzi has been skeptical of Dugger from the time he was a recruit. I think he was skeptical whether to offer him as a QB, and I think he was skeptical that he would be a viable QB at this level. I think the staff needed to be dragged kicking and screaming into putting him into the game at all - and even then, the plan was just to play him as a Wildcat QB until Lynch proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he couldn’t perform and they didn’t have a choice but to let Dugger actually play QB. I think Narduzzi was surprised beyond belief that he actually played well at QB.

That would entail thinking way outside the box. Haven't seen much of that from Duzz.

Don't worry. Narduzzi has a plan. He's sending Duggar to NJ to hang out with Jimmy Hoffa.

Teams can just wait to see if he is actually good, and then lure him away.

Yep...can't evaluate something over a three week period when it took all of two minutes to see who was the better QB. Makes me wonder about a few things.

How so?? I really want to hear this……
Well, see, coaches, even mediocre ones like we have, spend a ton of time evaluating their players and always start the guys that they think give them the best chance at winning, not their “favorites”. There are many variables to this including how well a player knows the playbook and runs the offense and executes the plays in practice. It’s not an exact science and they’re not always right. And sometimes, a guy who doesn’t look all that great in practice comes alive in games, and his teammates respond to him differently.

This recurrent theme that P4 football coaches whose livelihoods depend on winning play “favorites” over better players is about as uninformed and ignorant of the workings of a major college football team as it gets.

They may not play favorites, but they do play players they have a preference for. Like Dugger simply is not the QB type Nard likes. He likes pure pocket passers. So when he sets the depth chart, that is it. It doesnt really matter much what happens in practice.

Anyone that has played sports on any level knows conservative HCs, base most things from practice. But the thing is, when you set a depth chart, certain players does not get a true chance to show what they can do. You cant think that every player on the roster gets equal shares. Dugger never got a chance in practice. Then when that HC is oldschool and stubborn, players how my help them gets lost. Its not about favorites.

Bell would have been the one to decide who starts in that game. And I’d be willing to bet a lot of money that the reason he went with Lynch was because he felt Lynch was better equipped than Dugger, a raw and developing passer to be generous, to run Bell’s standard pass-heavy playbook. Turns out Lynch is a walk on for a reason, and Dugger, while raw, has some juice to his game and energized his teammates in a way that Lynch couldn’t have. They ran a different package for Dugger and it worked a lot better than Lynch running the usual playbook.

It had nothing to do with Nardizzle’s typecast for the QB position.

No doubt about that. It seems Heather Lyke would drop $50K for a '94 Geo Tracker, as long as it was someone else's money.

Heather Lyke was NOT operating in a vacuum. Whether it was coach contract extensions or spending 1/2 billion $ on a volleyball/'rasslin facility. All of these had to go thru the chancellor and trustees. Which makes Pelusi's suit against the trustees all the more ludicrous. He most certainly voted aye on a Narduzzi extension.
