QB at Tennessee

With how these so-called "student-athletes" are acting and with their entitlement attitudes, I'm getting very close to just not bothering being a fan. These players aren't entitled to anything except an education, if they get a scholarship or if they pay for it themselves. Getting money to play a game while you're getting a free education? GTFOOH.

reports are he threatened to opt out of last year's playoff game if they didnt give him more money, no clue if it worked..

sitting out of a spring camp is bad enough, but your team is in the playoff run and you threaten to sit out if you arent given more money? Man, if true, that's as bad as it gets.. not only do you kick him off team, you have the players "code red" his ass...

a man in a white shirt is putting a bandage on a patient 's head .

I read an article last night that said this was all started by his Dad and agent. It said Dad runs the show and Nico (and the family) basically falls in line with what Dad wants.

They wanted more money and they wanted Tennessee to get more oline help. They did, but apparently Dad was satisfied, so they asked for more money. Tennessee said no and they all moved on with business as usual.

Then the agent supposedly went behind the family’s back and tried again to get more money from UT and made threats if they didn’t pay up. That’s when UT pulled the plug.

Multiple guys on Tennessee's team wanting more money to participate in the playoff game is something that, to me, comprises the integrity of the sport. It'd be up there with them throwing games. Stuff like this makes me not want to watch anymore.

For the folks with law knowledge, would there be any punishments for collusion or does that only apply if there’s a legal agreement such as collective bargaining?

I am old school in this mentality and would kick guys off the team immediately for a stunt like that....even if it costs a playoff victory

I know PITT was put in a weird situation like this by a heavily recruited QB. In the end, PITT told him and his Dad there was no room for this at PITT and told him to pound sand. I gained a lot of respect for Duzz when that happened....98% of coaches/players would have folded.

1) Signs an NIL deal allegedly at 2 mill per year

2) Underwood at Michigan and Beck at Miami are making similar cheddar

3) Now, This kid's "team" wants more NIL money...looking to negotiate a new deal.

4) kid has been AWOL at UT spring practice

Stuff like this amuses me. If the fanboys dont pay, its possible UT goes say, 6-6. All the donors who threw in are now pissed and some will withhold more money. SOME....not all

If they do pony up....the financial arms race just continues....and only further accelerates the demise of our great sport.

In one hand, I regret Pitt is no longer a serious player in this house of cards.

OTOH, i am happy we arent part of this at this insane level.

I can't possibly love this any more. I want to see much more of these types of hold-outs. There's no contracts and unlimited free agency! Probably in-season transfers coming soon as long as someone sues for it. The players need to be employees with contracts. It's pretty simple

Yeah, I was thinking the same. This is the kind of stuff that'll prompt a different model. I only wish it were happening to a more prestigious program than Tennessee.

It's funny how every fan base in America claims to hate NIL, yet it's still going as strongly as ever.

i believe players opting out of playoff games for more money will be the straw that breaks the camel's back. one or two of these scenarios will blow it up. IMO.

How about incentive based NIL deals. if the team makes the playoffs, the roster gets bonuses. they win the NC, they get additional bonuses. not a crazy idea.

Honestly, I was almost a 2 year donor to A412 at $50/month. Not that this is huge money. And yes, I know Pitt and helping Pitt, but I stopped my donations when I heard the story about Carson Beck getting his Mercedes AND Lamborghini stolen and now this? Sorry, count me out. Not supporting this crap. if athletes want paid, then it should be from the revenue these schools get from TV and gate like all other pro sports. Not on fans backs who already donate for "stuff" and buy tickets, etc..

Tennessee AD Danny White fed this narrative to his national media buddy Pete Thamel to save face.

There have been concerns about Nico being a flight risk since December. Apparently, this situation had been brewing behind the scenes for some time, escalated the last two weeks, & the On3 story just brought things to a head rather quickly. Had that story not broke Thursday night, Nico would have played through the spring game, headed back to the left coast on Sunday and hit the portal when it opens on Wednesday.

As noted in the thread, this is all Nico's dad and his handlers. While team Nico was trying to get a bump in NIL pay to $4 million, it wasn't all money that was their concern. The dad supposedly isn't a fan of Heupel's offense and doesn't feel like Tennessee surrounded Nico with enough talent and weren't aggressive enough in the portal.
He broke the rules and contacted Oregon while filling out his paperwork

He finished his paperwork and told Heupel he wasn't going to show for the spring game and was going to enter the portal if Tennessee didn't stand and deliver

He was told hit the portal

It's kind of fun to see this dirt showing up that's all above the table but similar shenanigan's have been happening for a while. Coaches do it, too. Couldn't be happier to see this happening because these power schools that push the limits deserve everything they get.
Amen.

Tennessee brazenly broke NCAA rules when their collective flew Nico across the country in a private jet to visit. When the NCAA got involved, the state AG pushed back hard.

When you fly these guys across country and have photo shoots with Orange Lambos, this is the culture you create.

Very disappointed in myself. How could I neglect the fact that Nico's younger brother was committed to UCLA for months before ultimately flipping and deciding to embrace the hog on signing day.

Yeah no

The On3 report didn't bring anything to a head. All it said was that Nico and Tennessee were negotiating. Which turned out not to be true btw, Tennessee declined to negotiate at every step

He told Heupel Friday he wasn't playing in the spring game and would file his finished paperwork to enter the portal if Tennessee didn't give him what he wanted. He was told go ahead hit the portal you're done here

Yeah, what does that prove? That there are a lot of pretty dumb fans out there who support entitlement to undeserving "athletes".

I'm there too, Chief Justice. I never supported it before and I support even less now. Like you said, the colleges who are giving out this NIL stuff are also the same colleges who bring in lots of revenue from multiple sources. Let them get it from those sources.

You are correct in that Tennessee declined to negotiate. However, Nico went AWOL Friday and missed a Friday morning practice, which took everyone by surprise. Coaches, boosters, teammates tried all day to reach him to no avail. Nico texted the QB coach, Joey Halzle on Friday night to let him know he wasn't going to be at the Spring Game on Saturday.

I think it was obvious after Nico skipped Friday's practice and ghosted everyone that things were past the point of no return.

Totally agree.

I'm not sure I buy the story that anyone threatened to hold out during a playoff game. If they did, how on earth to you bring them back after that?

I saw that as well, but it's tough to imagine Belichick putting up with this silliness.

What I want to see are these 2 things:

1. A blue blood loses their star QB right before the 1st game and they go out and buy another QB like 2 days before the 1st game.

2. Looking back at the FSU CFP snub....the CFP is played after the 1st Semester is completed. If a team makes it but has a key player unable to play due to injury, I'd like to see them buy a player and then have their state AG sue for immediate eligibility so they can play in that year's CFP.

I hear ya. But I also dont blame these kids. For the vast majority of them this is their only opportunity to cash in big. They didnt make the rules, or lack of rules, they are just capitalizing on them. Sadly, my guess is that a number of these kids either wont see the all or much of the money due to the vultures they are surrounding themselves with or will blow it and end up broke in a few years.

Its now the wild wild west and every man for himself. On one level its amusing to watch and on another they've pretty much ruined amateur college sports. Although some would rightfully argue that big time college sports was almost always this way it just wasnt out in the open like it is today, at least the money part. Free agency with no contracts makes it totally insane.

Yeah. This. The boosters wanted to pamper kids, the schools enjoyed the benefit of that treatment, and now the whole thing is a mess and the narrative is that the kids are just greedy little jerks.

Doesn’t seem you had a problem with millions a year for coaches .

It’s probably not a coincidence that the two schools over the last two years that we have heard the players sat out/threatened to sit out in the spring are Florida State last year and Tennessee this year.

Both coaches have a reputation as being sh*tty recruiters, and their ability to land players is based purely on making by far the best offer on the market.

The type of players that draws is self selecting.
It’s why recruiters still matter, even in the age of NIL.

You haven’t seen athletes on commercials ?
In print advertising?
Doing autograph sessions ?

That’s what they are getting paid for .

Barely.

There are a few NCAA athletes who do commercials in what are legit NIL deals with national companies like Turbo Tax or Dr. Pepper. 99% of NIL deals are simply booster pay for play in disguise.

I mean, what are you going to do? The market just keeps going up so you might be paying more for less talent, anyway.
That's true, but I think that's a line that can't really be crossed. Holding out of a playoff game would seem to be counterproductive. I just can't picture any school having any interest in a player that would actually go through with that. Because if the player is willing to do that at his last program, why would it be any different at the next?

Who knows? At this point, even the absurd is reality when it comes to college sports.
