Portal target thread

Elliott doesn't get any offensive rebounds, mostly because he strictly plays on the perimeter on offense, but his defensive rebounding percentage is higher than Federiko's.
I was going say - he’s an impressive group defensive rebounder- including often in the paint

Guys from those teams to look at for sure. But IMO there will be a LOT of good guys in the Portal. And it wouldn’t surprise me if Jeff Capel’s phone will be blowing up with talented players who will contact him about wanting to come to play here.

Pitt plays an attractive and exciting style. The Pete is a great venue. Pitt is a tremendous school and Pittsburgh as a city has a very nice vibe: not too big; not too small.

This is a fabulous opportunity for Pitt to “make some hay” in the Portal. As well as to get in on some more outstanding HS recruits. The right mix and balance of ingredients (youth and experience) is the key to the recipe for success now with the Portal available.

Poor Jimmy B. He whined yesterday that he had to play his 17-18 y/o kids vs Pitt’s “men”. 😂

Awww! Like Jimmy couldn’t have used the Portal, too. He effed up and now wants to cry about it try to cover his @$$. 😢😢
Funny, it was Pitt’s young men Freddie and Diaz Graham that made a major difference! Wonder what is going on in Judah‘s head?

Good question about Mintz. My guess is there was some heavy duty negative recruiting going on w/r/t Jeff Capel’s future here. It’s one of the reasons I HATE rumor mongering. The predatory programs thrive on that stuff.

Judah got convinced by someone that Pitt/Capel was sinking. So he made the decision to trash the relationship he had built with HCJC and Pitt. Impulsively? 🤷‍♂️

Oh, well. Looks like his loss. Time will tell. But right now the situation at SU doesn’t look so great. Have to see if he’s willing to stick it out there or try the Portal.

Mintz needs to go to the NBA now. He will be a 1st Rounder based on potential. His game is NBA now, minus the shooting but that improves over time.

He absolutely will NOT be a first round NBA pick. He will go and workout and people will say why did we waste our time, he can’t shoot. They’re not selecting college guards who can’t shoot. Some of the things you say are so absurd

He’s the classic guy who should stay in college and cash as many NIL checks as possible and bang as many co-Ed’s as possible before going off to Europe.

Go compare freshmen year Mintz (who has lights out shooter Joe Giard to kick out to) to freshmen year Xavier Johnson who had a much worse supporting cast. Guess what you’ll find….

Two guys who score a lot of points, not efficiently who can’t shoot. And their teams suck. XJ was actually a better 3P and FT shooter which is how the NBA predicts your future shooting success, not herky jerk layups

He's 6'5. Massive difference. I realize that shooting is hugely important but besides that, he is as good of a combo guard as there is given his size, athleticism, and ability to create for himself. I absolutely think he's late 1st Round. You've been 100% wrong on Mintz for years so you may as well keep the streak going. Absolute worst-case scenario, he's a late 2nd Rounder and gets a 2 way, where he will make a similar amount than he would in college and gets to develop his game in a better environment (G-league)

He's the same size as X and you are clueless.

If anyone is going to enhance a player's size, it's the schools.

He’ll never play in the league. He’s not very good. Produces numbers on bad shooting on a bad team. Not a winner. Worst OakHill team of Steve Smith’s tenure was with him as their “star”. Their 3rd best center went to Duke. Were absolutely loaded. Shoots them out of games. Selfish player who can’t play in NBA

Johnson is 6'1. Mintz is a few inches taller. Mintz is much better. He will a million percent play in the NBA. Another L for you coming.

Same player too. My comp was spot on

X is more explosive with his first step but they have the same problem- the defenders can stay 5 feet off them and hope they shoot a 3.

Pitt's game plan in both games was to dare Mintz to shoot 3s. He passed on open looks because he has little confidence in making them.

No, he isn't. They are the same size when you use, you know... a measuring tool instead of your imagination.

Can Blake Hinson transfer without sitting out a year? Keeping Blake is first and foremost the biggest priority.

A veteran ballhandler is priority #2.

College basketball is starting to mimic the NBA where the ability to spread the floor is necessary. So a 3 and D guy is a key addition.

No. He has no available transfers left unless he graduates and wants to leave. Why would he? He can shoot whatever shot he wants and plays til his legs falls off. You can’t buy that kind of freedom

Need guards and to convince Hugley to stay and accept a new role. If you’re able to convince Hugley to come back and play a different role with different minutes, you don’t need to spend another minute on the frontcourt. Hinson and Jorge/Jeffress/Santos at the 4 and Fede and Guillermo/Hugley at the 5 is a really good collection of pieces in the frontcourt.

Then you add guards. Guards, guards, guards. As many shooters as you can find.

At the start of the season, I wanted to yell at some of his shot selection but now I just laugh when he pulls from 30ft with no one in front of him Lol. It's just more fun letting him go.

I love his heat check threes from the logo. Don’t think a single one has gone in, but I love when he fires them up. One will hit eventually, and it’ll be a delight.

Nah. I'm old school. It still pisses me off when he does that 5 seconds into the shot clock and nobody else is down the floor yet.

I doubt Hugely is coming back and quite frankly Im not sure its much of a loss.

I agree. He is useless on defense and when he plays any minutes, it's a 5 on 4 in favor of the other team. Don't waste a scholarship on him. Get some mature guys with guts who can play defense in the portal and keep the team experienced as much as possible.

I understand your reasoning but disagree. You cannot have too many talented bigs. What happens this year if Federiko gets injured?

I think Hugley would be one of the better backup 5’s in the conference. That’s where I want him, similar to what Mylyjeal Poteat is for Virginia Tech this year.

You’re either retaining him, or battling for a backup center from a mid-major in the portal that you’re fighting a dozen other high majors for. The first option is a hell of a lot easier.

LOL!!! I got the evil glare several times back in the day when I launched a quick one from deep. 😠

Of course those were all just 2 pointers then. So I guess it was understandable to try for a closer/better shot. At least the coach thought so. 😏

I suppose as a back up he’d be Ok. But I think the Diaz kid is far better defensively is much better from a team perspective with SC will be much better offensively next year

I just don’t think Hugley is a big add for them next year IMO.

I hear you. I guess my point is more that if Hugley’s gone, we’re probably going to need another 5 out of the portal. And I think it’s an easier path for Pitt to convince Hugley to take a lesser role here than it would be to try and fight off a bunch of teams for a backup 5 when we can instead devote all of our efforts towards replenishing the backcourt through the portal.

I think we’d be okay with just Fede and Guillermo next year, but it’s probably living a little too dangerously for the staff’s comfort.

Fede's little brother turns 19 in September and appears to be a legit 6'10. From what I have seen of him, he looks far closer to a PF / C as opposed to a future SF. I have no inside information as to whether a reclass in 2023 is possible, but I have certainly thought about it, especially so, with the rapid improvement of Fede.

And, I find it highly interesting that I hear Pitt is not recruiting Thomas Sorber hard any more. That brings me back to Hugley / Okku Federiko and what happens with both of them here.

I still don't think Hugley is a 100% given to even play next year. Anywhere.

I would love to get Fede’s brother, and feel like it will probably end up happening. But I don’t really see it as an ideal option at the 5 next year. I really like his potential as a Gueye type at the 4 when Hinson’s done.

I think they moved away from Sorber because he’s basically Hugley II. Same with Hansberry this cycle. They saw something they like in the player profile of Fede and Guillermo (who, to be honest, they’ve been trying to get guys like that for a while and just haven’t won the battle) and are moving in that direction. I think they’d welcome Hugley back because they know him, they’re comfortable with him, and have already invested a lot into him. But I don’t think we’ll be recruiting too many more players like him.

Hansberry was dead on arrival because of Mintz. We were in his top 3 at one point and he was strongly considering us. Hansberry's family is pretty good friends with Mintz's family. After Mintz left, we were dead in the water for Hansberry.

Not recruiting Sorber to me is a mistake. His foot work is excellent and quite advanced for a player at his age. NIL money is going to be heavily involved with him and one of his best friends Jalil Bethea. Miami, Virginia, Villanova, Syracuse somewhere like that is where they are going. Bethea was the PCL player of the year as a junior, quite an accomplishment for him.

I'm not sold on Mintz as a first round pick, but it's entirely possible. It's really not absurd.

They select college guards that can't shoot quite often. Did you ever see Jaylen Brown or Keon Johnson play in college?
