Science says "open schools"

That’s ironic, Trump just said the exact same thing.

Now if we can get SMF to say it to, that would be the perfect trifecta!

Because both are dumb asses and do not understand why we need to social distance and wear masks. The main risks were never about kids. It is about protecting the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions. You plant vectors in school and get exponential spread to parents, caregivers, and elderly. You overwhelm the hospitals and then get excess death not related to covid. Schools could open overseas because they actually listened to scientists, flattened their curves, and wore masks.

Those who receive their news from left-leaning media sources will debunk this article because it's medical doctor author is affiliated with the Hoover Institution which is a right-leaning think tank.

Note: Politics aside, the same position about schools needing to be reopened is also the position of the National Academy of Pediatrics. It seems to be mainly a number of public school teachers and administrators who remain afraid of reopening the schools.

The American Academy of Pediatrics said it’s goal is to return to school. This is a goal, if feasible. No one on the left or right should get medical information from politics sites. Science must be apolitical and peer-reviewed. Fauci has advised across multiple administrations and consulted for 5 presidents. Only now is part of a grand political conspiracy.

So what is your advice for all the families that have a grandparent(s) that help support school age children and are in contact with them on a regular basis? Are you trying to say everyone must attend a brick and mortar in person for the 180 day school calendar? What is the plan for teachers that are 55 or older and/or have a higher risk to COVID?

The logistics of a safe return to school is problematic.

They need to temp a kid before they get on a bus. Then at the school if they don't ride the bus.

The problem is what to do with the kid who has a fever. Many parents simply won't come get the kid.

Social distancing isn't possible in most classrooms.

Good luck running on a COVID-19 outbreak in schools.

I shouldn't give advice. I'm not a Medical Doctor. But, since you asked - I would say that every household that has at-risk family member whether it be granny or Tiny Tim should stay home and do online schooling.

I suggest that every teacher that is at-risk whether through age or has a pre-existing condition should stay home.

I believe that the rest of the students, educators, and administrators should be in school - brick and motar style.

Might as well open them. America is full of "mah freedum" and "defund the police" morons and the situation is already f'ed because of them.

I agree with you. Families that still want an online education can attend a traditional Cyber School that meets their needs. School choice is important, especially with everything that is going on right now.

It's an opinion article, dude.

This article is pretty stupid. "Kids don't die of COVID." Jesus, dude, we know. Guess who does? Old people. Guess who works in schools, drives buses, cleans the hallways, watches the kids after school while mom and dad works? Old people. So kids are gonna be fine, they're just gonna bounce COVID back and forth and give it to their 50+ year old parents and 60+ year old grandparents.

We know COVID sucks. We know it's hurting kids' education, their mental health, and their precious youth. We know. Which is why we asked our leaders to take reasonable measures to stop the spread 3 months ago. Most did, briefly, and then declared a too soon victory while the virus came roaring back. Now we're 3 weeks from starting school down here in GA and some doctor is saying "oh well, guess kids are gonna get their teachers sick, nothing else we can do." Pathetic.

The key is whether or not at risk teachers would be able to get workers compensation?

Stay inside forever? What is your plan other than that?

That is not accurate. You are a very dramatic person chicken little.

Flattening the curve was never about shutting down for months. Shutting down this long will be far more damaging than Covid. But clearly you have a comfortable enough life to not care a bit for people whose lives are being ruined that have very little risk from Covid.

So what are we to think about the scientific basis for flattening the curve? Was a lie? Were they wrong? If they were wrong, why should we believe that they are now right?

Thinking critically rather than carbon copying ideas from your talking points isn’t intelligence.

Everything is stupid if you don’t agree. But stay on message.

And he came out today and said,

"We should try the best as possible to get the children back to school and the schools open for the simple reason that the secondary, unintended consequences of having children not being able to go to school has ripple effects for the family that might have deleterious effects that really override the so-called safety benefits."

So is he one of the dumb asses too?

Reading Comprehension For Dummies - The reply is up above and I agreed with Steelcurtain55.
I said this in my original response to you, “Stay inside forever? What is your plan other than that?”

How could you possibly have such an angry reaction from that? Why are you so emotional?

You took my comment as attacking you. Are you having a stressful day?

Lol. I guess you missed the memo...

Fox News lawyer tells judge that Tucker Carlson's audience doesn't expect him to report the facts.
Didn’t Tucker just play their own words?

Guess you didn’t make an effort to watch before you responded. You sure are a fact-seeker.

Why are you a donkey that sticks his nose into conversations that don’t involve you? Then you ask me questions that were already addressed. Either keep up, put me on ignore, or don’t reply to me. Problem solved.

Well, this is a public message board. Not exactly a private setting.

But you are having an interesting conversation about eliminating those over 55 from the workforce. Or do you mean just eliminating those over 55 from working anywhere in the school system?

Public policy genius. :)

But feel free to call me nasty names. It fits you well.

Fauci has long said it is not a one size fits all option, which I agree with. In contrast, Trump, Devos, and Desantis take the one size fits all approach. Desantis signed an executive order mandating all schools be opened for physical attendance overriding local decisions. Those are the dumb asses. And Herman Cain as well. The man who advocates for no mask wearing on Twitter the same day he has the audacity to present to the hospital for covid treatment. His twitter asks for prayers. He should have asked people to wear masks.

"Shutting down for months" allowed a variety of countries in Europe and Asia to reach around 0 new cases per day, now they are reopening safely.

We half-assed it (like Brazil and Sweden, other world leaders in per capita deaths), now lead the world not just in deaths but will face the economic consequences of dragging on with a pandemic recession for an extra year or more.

Sweden didn’t even half ass it. They just let it rip and their deaths per million is sky high. And it hasn’t helped their economy by staying wide open either.

The largest Pediatrician organization has called for children to be in person school this fall.

"The guidance says "schools are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being."

The AAP cites "mounting evidence" that transmission of the coronavirus by young children is uncommon, partly because they are less likely to contract it in the first place.

On the other hand, the AAP argues that based on the nation's experience this spring, remote learning is likely to result in severe learning loss and increased social isolation. Social isolation, in turn, can breed serious social, emotional and health issues: "child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation." Furthermore, these impacts will be visited more severely on Black and brown children, as well as low-income children and those with learning disabilities."

We shut it down for months in PA and while we didn't get it down to 0 new cases per day probably could have if there was an earlier public health campaign for masks and other safe practices. People are too stupid, stubborn, selfish, or all of the above to do something so simple and as a result we are all going to have to have limitations on normalcy longer than what was needed.

For the record, the leader in per capita deaths is still Belgium. And it's not even close. They are more than 25% ahead the UK, who is in second. Spain and Italy also come in ahead of Sweden at number five. The US is 7th, behind France in 6th. Brazil is currently 12th, although they are rising faster than anyone right now.

The big difference between the US and all those wonderful European countries, or, well, OK, one of the differences, is that the fatality rate in the US among people with confirmed cases is much, much lower in the US. In the US the fatality rate of people who have gotten Covid is 4.3%. In Belgium it's 15.8%. In the UK it's 15.5%. In Spain it's 9.5%. In Italy it's 14.4%. In France it's a whopping 17.7%, the worst in the world to date.

I tested around 30 people the other day. Calling their symptoms mild would be an embellishment. I haven't had a really sick person in over a month and that patient wasn't even admitted.

The elderly that need protected in our long term facilities are being properly managed. Kids going to school will not impact that environment

Most kids have young parents. Maybe those raised by elderly could develop a plan at home that reduces exposure to family members with age/comorbidity issues

The hospitals in NYC were not even overwhelmed. They never ran out of ventilators or beds. We were furloughing people in Pittsburgh.

The "excess death" due to COVID is from fear mongering that reduced elective surgeries and scared people from being seen reducing diseases such as cancer from being diagnosed.

Quit focusing on number of new cases. None of the hundreds I have seen recently have symptoms worse than the common cold. I wouldn't even focus on hospitalizations because we stick many older in obs as a precaution due to the concerns of family vs actual health of patient

ICU admissions and vents are the only criteria that are important. Take a waltz to Presby six floor and hear the echoes when you yell. Maybe things will change but right now this virus is a water down version of it's former self. The Monsters Inc Fear Factory needs a lay off

Words spoken from a place of privilege. Many schools have to give kids free lunch. I’m sure their support systems allow for these things. My wife had 3 grandparents of kids who were primary caretakers pass from covid this school year.

And I am glad your hospitals are ok. PA has a good governor who is keeping things in check. I’m in Florida where hospitals are now feeling the impact. Things were fine until just a few weeks ago. Exponential growth is a bitch. I suppose I do fear monger. Gotta make sure demented Biden wins.

Our kids school ( also GA) just delayed opening by a month. Absolutely the correct move with the numbers escalating daily. This is a ****ing mess and Kemp is a complete asshat... can’t even bring himself to make masks a requirement because he’s afraid of Donnie dipshit. Then to the south a bit further there’s Desantis... another one up for this years “ Amity Mayoral Award” winner... the guy literally hasn’t ever had a photo taken or a press conference where doesn’t just look... stupid... and then he speaks & it’s confirmation of everything you believed upon seeing him...

You are not even close to running out of non-monitored hospital beds, ICU beds or vents. Again, NYC didn't even use all of their beds and vents. I have access to real time data that shows me by state the number of vents in use and reserve. It also breaks down the various types of beds available and what is in reserve. Somebody mentioned hospitals being overwhelmed. This is constantly regurgitated by the media. The answer is always somewhere in the middle.

I appreciate your insight.

I came across this article a couple of weeks ago on the UPMC website and the headline stuck with me:

"UPMC Urges 'Changing Mindset" to focus on Severity of Illness, not Frequency of COVID-19 infections"
