It is almost comical at this point how teams continue to beat this defense with slot receivers, running backs, or tight ends running straight line routes up the middle of the field.

It honestly feels like opposing offensive coordinators are just waiting for a critical moment in a game to call the play.

They put in a formation where they know that Pitt will blow the coverage. Probably from film study during the week instead of looking at an iPad on the sideline.

We have seen the same route run against us by Cinci, UNC, Cal, Syracuse, SMU and now Virginia. Every team on that list scored a TD on that pass except Syracuse.

Kudos to the other teams for exploiting a weakness, but at some point you need to look at yourself in the mirror and figure out why it is a weakness.

Our staff and players don’t seam to want to do that though. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Is it true that all of the teams you mentioned have scored TD's on that play? I do remember 1 or 2 but if that's true, that's like the single greatest play call vs any defense ever.

We could debate about the Cinci TD because the tight end didn’t run “completely straight” on the route but, yes, if you go back and watch the highlights of the games mentioned you will see TDs on that route every time.

Also, if you watch the Cinci highlights, their second TD was also set up by a seam route that gained 30 plus yards.

Another week and another TD up the seam. Also, tons of open receivers that Klubnik just missed with poor throws.

There is something fundamentally flawed with this defense or the players aren’t athletic enough to play it. Probably both.

This has happened for years though and it never gets any better. I wouldn’t have my job if I kept making the same mistake that many times.

Yeah, you are right about this. First TD was kind of a version of this also (what the hell was McIntyre doing?). Couple overthrows as well, but it seems like all the big plays we give up now are safeties, not corners.

And it’s not the wheel route every game.

The softness of the DB coverage today was disappointing and puzzling…
