Syracuse game thread

Withstanding a run? Expected. Freezing up totally and choking it to almost a loss?? The guys you want out there at the end were Hinson, Sibande and Burton... Nelly was choking and Graham ain't ready for that kind of pressure.

Perhaps read my comment again. That last 10 minutes was an embarrassing display of poor shots, turnovers and terrible clock management.

I also said, great 30 minutes. But you didn’t read that, or the Hail to Pitt
It’s also because Cuse had to play aggressive and honestly the refs bailed them out a bunch

We can learn from this

Wonder if any of the transfers wouldn’t have transfered in if those guys were here. So might not be the exact team, but yeah I’d love to have them.
I think Cummings wanted to come home. Elliot, who knows. Mintz and Shifino are both freshmen. Rather take the young talent like those two with Cummings.

We were a 3.5 dog on the road and won by 2. Were statistically better in all categories except turnovers. We had 16 to Cuse’s 9. If we hadn’t turned it over so much we would have maintained a big lead.

Bottom line this win at the dome makes us appear to be playing at the level of around a top 30-40 team and in upper half, maybe upper third of ACC at this point even with losing the big lead.

Sometimes when a home team presses you late you lose a big lead. In college hoops that is pretty normal. No point in hand ringing about it. It’s no big deal..

Will take that win! Have to wonder if the secret is out a bit now with our lack of a floor leader and true ball handler on how to handle Pitt's hot 3 point shooting by pressing and pressuring.

Wonder if we would have lost with hughley. Are we down to a seven man rotation? Need a little more bench to eat some minutes

From what I saw, we were very fortunate to be hitting all of those 3's. We needed every one of them. I doubt they'll fall that easily in many games this year.

Our defense was mediocre to bad. If this team can't play better defense than that, we lose against the better ACC teams. And good offense starts with good defense, along with protecting the ball. We didn't do a good job with that either.

At least it's a win, in spite of some poor game management and the poor defense and turnovers. I'll take that any day of the week. Now it gets tougher.

With Mintz, he's better and has more potential than anyone on this Pitt team as a PG. I don't count Johnson because I haven't seen him play and he may never play for Pitt. It's unfortunate Mintz decided to not honor his commitment. But under the circumstances and with the outlook going forward for this Pitt program, who can blame him.

That's a given. Mintz would have looked good for us out there.

Two baskets since 10:45 that made it 72-52.

That was some embarrassing coaching and play. How do you just turn it off? That was ridiculous.

Great 30:15 seconds guys. Hail to Pitt.
I wouldn't say they turned it off. They just made a lot of bad plays and bad decisions. I had to go back and rewatch the last 10 minutes. 3 times we launched 3's with 20-22 seconds left on the shot clock. 3 times when we were up double digits with less than 8:00 to go (!!!). We fouled a 3-point shooter for a 4-point play. We obviously made several stupid turnovers, including Hinson giving a breakaway 2 and Elliott later stepping out of bounds. We couldn't rebound a missed free throw leading to a put-back that made it 83-79. Syracuse gets some credit for ramping up the D, too. When JDG was in it allowed them to really stretch the zone and pressure us. But that said, if you want to (nearly) blow a 16-point lead with under 8:00 to go, all of the above make it possible.

Was fatigue a factor late with the short bench? Very possibly.

In the end, all non-Pitt fans will ultimately notice about this game is that Pitt beat Cuse in the dome when Cuse was favored by 3.5.. That exceeded their expectations as they expected a Cuse win. The result should/will move Pitt up both in natioanl perception and mathematically in the current computer rankings. That Pitt lost a 20 point lead won't be on anyone's radar other than Pitt fans who watched the game and have the late game slump preying on their minds.
