Team voted no on NIT

I probably the last person to defend Jeff Capel on this website but it’s his responsibility to be the steward for the team
Agreed, and it is a reflection of his leadership that this team does not enjoy the experience of preparing and playing together. make no mistake these kids will be in a gym playing, just not with the Coaches in a "team" building way.

How do you know this vote wasn’t taken 24 hours ago? You have no idea how long this decision has been in the making.

That's true, I don't know. In '92 it was after though.

It still is not something for the players to vote on, IMO. And I completely disagree with Capel having the team do so.

You are right, Capel is the steward. And I am the steward of my support for the program. He made his call. And I will have to carefully think on mine.

Fun fact (well, OK, not really). Pitt has played a home game in the NIT six times in school history. I have been in attendance at all six.

1984 versus Notre Dame
1992 versus Florida
1997 versus New Orleans
2001 versus St. Bonaventure
2001 versus Mississippi State
2015 versus George Washington
1997 was the only postseason of my undergraduate years. I was so happy to be there!

I don't blame them. It would be hard to get up for the loser NIT when you deserved to be in. And the fans are not gonna show up.
That's my major problem with this.

Sports is a microcosm of life and is there to teach life lessons. And the attitude of "I didn't get what I think I deserved" so I'll take my ball and go home, in my opinion, is a loser attitude and is not a message to pat oneself on the back for promoting.

Disagree. Haven't they already proved they like preparing and playing together?

I was an undergraduate in 1984 for the game against Notre Dame.

I don't know about in your year because I was a regular season ticket holder then, but in 1984 they didn't even have a student section or cheap tickets for students. A buddy of mine said we should go (or maybe I told him we should go, I don't really remember) so we bought "regular" tickets, because there were no student ticket sales.

Do you not get the irony of what you’re doing with your support?

He shouldn't allowed it to be put up for a vote. And neither should have Heather.

The stupidest thing is to vote on something immediately after the disappointment of not getting in, when emotions are so high.

I actually get irritated by how much credit Lyke gets for things she had no hand in, but I'll actually defend her here: take what you know of fan turnout for this season and extrapolate that to hosting an NIT game.

The turnout would've been putrid. And that's before assuming Blake & Bub didn't opt out.

I was at the last four. Still remember N.O. having a big-time player (think he was #33) and the Bonnies having a guard who had to be damn near official midget status. Also remember watching us play at Arkansas after one of those wins (I forget which one).

As I said before, competitors want to play whether it is in front on no one or 10K.

I hate the message it sends.

I quit because I didn't get what I think I deserved is not an attitude to be applauded.

NIT crowds are sad.

I was in Austin back in 2019 and took in a UT NIT game. I just wanted to see the Erwin Events Center because I had never been there and I knew that would be my only chance. The crowd was probably around 1000.

Texas jumped on South Dakota State 20-0 and ended up winning in OT.

One of the most sad and pathetic sporting events I've ever attended.

I think we have to remember that we have 2 guys on our roster likely angling for the NBA in Bub and Blake. They may not have wanted to be part of the NIT due to that. And if they gave any indication that they didn't want to play, I could see why the other guys on the team would have then voted no.

I mean I agree with you, but why quit on an opportunity to play together and continue to get better? The selection committee couldn't care less about your program.
I know. But it’s hard to be screwed that hard and keep playing. Virginia is awful. That has to be weighing on them.

Did you attend the GW vs Pitt game last time we played at The Pete in the NIT? There were about 1,000 fans and change in attendance.

I did and felt really bad for Jamie. He looked like he was going to die on the sidelines watching his guys play like middle schoolers. What a lack of talent. Did an unbelievable coaching job to get those guys to the NIT

Bingo! I stand corrected

Yeah, I also hate quitting on your teammates.

Playing in the NIT would have zero affect on their draft status.

Its not that exactly but these kids will be playing pickup almost every day so I dont understand why they wouldn't rather play other teams than pickup.

I disagree with this. If individual players choose to opt out that’s one thing, but for the program this equals extra exposure, revenue, and practices. If selected, put a team on the floor. The NIT is no different than the football team playing in the Sun Bowl. Take advantage of the extras it affords.

Right. If a few guys who are leaving want to opt out, fine. But there shouldn't be a vote. Its part of the season.

If you get rejected by a 10, you don't have to settle for Kristen Stewart. You get back on the horse and better yourself so you can get that next 10!

I don't even know if the NIT is still real. I I couldn't find any of the games on TV a few years ago when I was looking for them. Was more difficult than finding wwf house show results in 1992.
