The standard is the standard,’ it feels like a saying now

I don't get how you regularly eviscerate Pitt (as do I) but then stick up for the Steelers and, even more nuttily, the Pirates. You cray AF, fo'real.
I don't believe I ever stand up for the PIrates, just pay some attention to them like you slow down to look at a car wreck.

And if sticking up for the Steelers means acknowledging the present reality that nothing will change until Rooney decides to change it, guilty as charged.

Eviscerating Narduzzi? Guilty as charged.

I dunno. Brady and a Mahomes, Peyton in his time, they elevate teams. They do matter. Matter alot. Ain't a lot of HOFers on those NE teams, and not that many on KC.
Didn’t say they don’t matter but without the other parts they don’t automatically make a team a Super Bowl contender. As I said they increase the margin for error (ie they have a significant affect) but the Steelers with Mahomes would still be an after thought for the Super Bowl as they now stand

A little affirmation bias here, from an unlikely source.

About that Tomlin defense ??

I said in one of the threads whatever happened to blitzburg.? The Steelers have become as conservative on defense as they have on offense. That’s on MM who is supposed to be a defensive master mind

The run heavy approach to Cinci was crazy when they ran up a big score by passing. Did they try to over think thr game plan or was this another case of Tomlin living in his fears ?

His “keep the lid on” no risk/live in their fears defensive football philosophy is aligned with his “protect the football” live in their fears offensive philosophy. I’ve been on this overpaid big nasty defense for years. It’s embarrassing. They live off the LeBeau years. When Dick left and Tomlin took over the defense, what happened? They became a defense that when they play renegade in the stadium, the other teams offense drives 90 yards for a 4th quarter TD more often than the team getting a big defensive stand.

I’ll always be a Tomlin fan for getting this team to two super bowls. He was the right guy for that team then. But they probably underachieved, just as those Cowher teams underachieved (although spygate cost Cowher a title or two IMO). But it’s time for Rooney to send Tomlin to the NBC booth. I’ve always felt Tomlin has a streak of conservatism in him as a person…and it protrudes significantly in his football philosophy. He’s a good dude and an average coach.

Very much the exception to the rule , though .
Brad johnson and tent dilfer

That’s about the list
Add Denver Peyton Manning to that list, Plunket wasn't elite, how about Jim McMahon, Jeff Hostetler anyone, Nick Foles was already mentioned. Is Flacco elite? And Russell Wilson didn't do all that much without the Legion of Boom. So it happens more than we think.

Heard Red Grange was pretty decent too!

Here's the thing, as long as the owner is more aligned with the coach than trying to win a championship, nothing changes. Dan when he hired Tomlin, forced him to keep guys like Lebeau and Arians around. Art II has given Tomlin full control of the franchise without seemingly accountability. At this point, Art II doesn't want to be the first Steelers owner to fire a coach in over 55 years. But he could demand of Tomlin to clean house and have final approval of who he hires and increase the size of his staff. But he is alot like Bob Nutting, seemingly satisfied to make money and being slight north of average. So we can all bitch about Tomlin, but if the boss doesn't think he is doing a bad job, the only way you can voice your displeasure is make a Steelers/Bengals game look like a Pitt/Youngstown State game. Sea of yellow.

I get the sense that Tomlin has bought into the idea that never having a losing season is more important than anything else. It's how he coaches and it's coming at the expense of developing young talent. The Steelers rarely sign draft picks to second contracts anymore, have zero sense on how to develop a young QB, and the coaching staff has lacked the ability to execute the type of team the front office is trying to build.

He was paid like one but his production was very pedestrian. He's statistically better as a journeyman.

Actually, Flacco is a good example of a franchise realizing it wasn't being smart with personnel and making a very aggressive move to get a young QB who is a franchise guy.
I agree - but also an example of why bringing a qb along slowly is a better idea !

Outside of the 1994 AFC Championship game, I don't Cowher's teams underachieved much at all. Even if they beat the Chargers that year, they would've been the underdog in the SB. I agree Spygate changed the outcome of some of those games. Anyone disagrees has never heard of the phrase "Scout Team All American." My view really changed on the matter when DJ Williams described playing for Josh McDaniels.

Art Rooney has two bosses

His lead accountant and Coach Tomlin.

All if the mediocrity starts and ends with Tomlin. None of assistants ever get new coaching jobs. He drafts guys and gets to put them into a new postion. He drafts questionable character players but feels like he can straighten that out when other teams won’t go near the player. He has never been a game strategist and rarely makes half time decisions that result in game changing momentum. Let’s assholes ruin the locker room.

Rooney only has an 8 year sample size and obviously needs another few more years to see a pattern.

The standard is believing the current coach is capable of fixing all of the problems and mistakes that he is responsible for. The standard is a joke

All of that, and "the standard" will be headed to the Hall of Fame in the end.

LOL, Embarassed??? On an anonymous message board, having discourse with an idiot??
Pickett getting warmed up on the clipboard for tomorrow!
Hope he gets in, really want Washington to win!!!
You seem like the weak minded minion that could get catfished to hurt yourself. You’re not the sharpest knife in the kitchen drawer just by virtue you couldn’t keep up with a simple thread. And then the obligatory name calling because your feelings got hurt. I hope you have some Midol.

I'll get some. Thanks for the tip!!

Always best to listen to the expert of menstrual cramps !
And you being a "pharmacist" would fit that expert label in that area more than anyone on this board. But maybe your just not a good "pharmacist" and by virtue of both of you Darwin nominees posts, not being good at something is par for the course.

They have been underwhelming. Smith seems decent.
The defense needs an overhaul, but is it Tomlin or Austin, or is it just the personnel??
It’s both and Tomlin controls the D and play calling. Offense is predictable and nothing changes. Tomlin lives in his fears of turnovers in the passing game. The standard is the standard = mediocrity. Philosophy has to change with the times.

Man Washington doesn’t live in their fears much.
Went for it twice on 4th down
Fake punt 4th down conversion from their own territory.
Went for 2 after a TD

All in the first 1.5 quarters of this game.
