Update: Russell Wilson signing with Steelers per Schefter

Patrick Queen is a splash signing. He's only 24 years old:

Come on Meister, you’re obviously reading the wrong sources. We’ve already had a few in here panning it as a meh signing.

I sure don’t know what the expectations are, we sure had a hole at ILB and this sure looks like a decent signing to help fill that hole based on player talent and $.

Kind of like the hole at QB. Would I have preferred a Kirk Cousins, sure except for the unrealistic price tag. If not a starter, Wilson ends up being a way cheaper backup than what Rudolph or anyone else would have been.

I agree Colbert might as well have been throwing darts in a dimly lit room those last few drafts. But the NFL is probably more forgiving than we (definitely speaking for myself, I know) make it seem at times. The 49ers gave up so much draft capital to get Lance and Jimmy G, yet here they are with a 7th round pick. That's the beauty of the draft system and the cap - you have to be super inept to not be able to recover at least someone. Hell, we're inept and we're still a low end playoff team. And this is especially true with the way teams can restructure contracts, kick dead money down the road, and "go for it" that much more in free agency (which I'm not a huge fan of, but hey). The Rams did that and won a Super Bowl, and just when it looked like they were cooked they seem to be kind of on the upswing again.
All of the AFC playoff QBs were either Superman (Mahomes, Allen, Lamar), the product of elite scheme (Tua), both (Stroud) or kind of weird ugly ducklings that had no upside and got killed (Browns, Steelers). And the first 4 guys were all drafted by their teams.

I think to win it all you either need elite talent, elite coaching, or both. And you probably need a self-drafted QB unless you luck out and have a really good situation that aligns perfectly with an elite older available QB's window (Brady, Stafford). I don't think we have any of that. Russ over Kenny maybe gets us 1% closer to winning it all but it's not really a meaningful improvement IMO. And to the extent we're giving up on draft picks we need to fix the coaching first. Too many guys are getting squandered, leaving the building, and playing good ball elsewhere.

Nothing about how the Steelers handle personnel has made sense for a while, now, if we're being honest about it.

If we're saying Wilson can win more games, perhaps they should have gone out and spent more money on someone that will be viable for a few years.

Or they think Wilson can win more games now, while giving Pickett a little more time to develop.

I can't make any definitive statements, because there are always exceptions. Flacco won one; Kapernick damn near won one; Purdy almost won one; Foles... the list goes on. Hell, even Eli Manning is overrated as hell, and he won two.

But I do know that 8/10 I'm either finding one of the handful of guys worth paying elite money to or going with a cheap rookie at QB and building around him while seeing if he becomes elite in the seasons before it's time to pay him. That middle tier just seems to give you the worst of both worlds - especially when you start getting into that $25 - $40M range. So many of those guys suck and consume way too much money (again, always exceptions).

He's still a Steeler till Wednesday so his agent couldn't even talk to anyone until today at noon. He can't speak to anyone until Wednesday at 4.

You can predict that, and you may end up being right, but you can't draw a conclusion when FA hasn't even started.
Buddy -
Yet all these other players are in the same
Position - and have deals in hand

Yes
It’s a show me something deal for Russell
It’s a better Dewayne Haskins type of deal
If it's a real competition I can't see Kenny getting the #1 job? I think it's Kenny who has to do the most actually SHOWING, unless they just hand him the job with no regard for performance. Will be a lot of pressure on Kenny if he starts and he's throwing for 160 yards per game and one TD every other game and the offense is still scoring 16ppg it's not going to be pretty.

CBS Sports Grade on Queen signing:

Steelers signing Patrick Queen:

It wasn't cheap, but the Pittsburgh Steelers made a notable move Tuesday with the reported signing of former Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen to a three-year, $41 million deal.

A Pro Bowler last season and a former Ravens first-round pick, Queen fills what was a sizable need in the middle of Pittsburgh's defense. Queen is a physical, hard-hitting player who is also versatile. Last season, he filled the stat sheet with 133 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

The addition of Queen adds yet another Pro Bowl-level player to a Steelers defense that already includes T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Alex Highsmith and Cam Heyward.

GRADE A

Not much had happened with anyone when you made that comment, but since you want to talk about now:

As of now there are at least nine QBs that have already agreed to deals, including such luminaries as Drew Lock and Jameis Winston. But still no Mason Rudolph.

How is he worse than Kenny?

I'm not anti-Pickett in any way. I still think there's a chance he develops into a good NFL starter. But how can anyone possibly say Wilson is worse based on what we've seen so far?
The same way people on here say all kinds of nonsense.

I think it was Einstein who said, “Nothing makes a man more valuable than the time he spends arguing about sports stuff.”

There's an argument that Kenny is better because wis W/L record is better as if he was the main factor in winning, and "Stats" like TOUCHDOWN PASSES don't matter, the battle cry is "the only stat I care about is Ws", as if scoring more TDs won't result in scoring more points and maybe more wins and the game not being totally hopeless if the opponent scores 28-30 points.

So Russ dinked and dunked his way to TDs.

Just showing you how stupid your cherry picked stats are. So yeah, I compared him to the QB most people would say is the best. Who should we compare him to? I'll let you pick.
Maybe the point was that he threw mostly short passes because his arm is shot. Hes the new savior that will be boo'd out of the stadium when he stinks out the joint after 2-3 games. Fatboy is already making excuses saying the steelers need to add more talent on Offense for Russ to do his thing LOL

That's true, they only have 2 WRs who played at all in the offense last year after getting rid of Robinson and Johnson. Wilson is not looked upon as a savior, but reality is, if Kenny had been good even a little bit, he wouldn't be here.

I just explained why Kenny can win
The Steelers invested less in Russ than they did Mason Rudolph last year

Aditi pretty much said on the fan it would behoove Kenny to seek a trade considering what has happened the last few years and the conversation he had with the Steelers a few weeks back prior to them going out and signing Wilson
