USA Soccer thread

Not true, I'm on a USMNT Facebook group and a whole lot of people there where happy USAWNT is losing because OF RAPINOE AND THE KNEELERS.
It’s just one of the weird things in his mind that he holds onto as fact.

soccer is a suburban sport. How does he think suburbs vote?

It is true that possibly, a traditional, conservative, football crazy American, might be less likely to be a soccer fan, was probably 95% true 30-35 years ago, but yeah, the proliferation of youth soccer and people getting involved and their kids being involved etc. has changed that. I never watched soccer 30-35 years ago, but really, after playing as a GK in an adult rec league for awhile, stumbling into it by accident, and then following my daughter playing for 12 years from U8 to college, even pretending to be a rec league assistant coach for awhile, now I like it, and it has nothing to do with politics. Look at the success of pro soccer, MLS in Atlanta, Texas, Nashville., conservative states. Liking soccer isn't leftist.

PSG telling Neymar to rest before camp is completely different than Chelsea telling Pulisic to go play in the Gold Cup instead of the Olympics

Except you obviously didn't notice that Pulisic didn't play in the Gold Cup either. Chelsea wouldn't have given him a choice to play in the Olympics instead of the Gold Cup, Chelsea didn't want him playing in EITHER. And so he didn't.

I mean really, do you have any idea at all what you are talking about?

This is one of my favorites. He is listed at 200 pounds. The dude is a freak with rare size for his speed and talent.
Well, it seems Lukaku will be in a Chelsea uniform by Wednesday’s Super Cup match. Personal terms with him and a transfer agreement has been met with Inter. He will be considered a home grown player for Chelsea as well.

I didn’t like him playing in Italy.

US women win bronze with a 4-3 win over Australia. Disappointing tournament, but the US found their offensive form pretty well today and that was as entertaining of a women’s game as I have seen. Now we wait and see the future of Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan. I am hoping all three move on although Rapinoe was pretty special today.

yep. She sure is special alright.

on a side note, she was the architect of the greatest goal is soccer history for me.
The corner kick goal today was pretty special. You don’t typically see females generate that kind of spin on the ball.

Not sure she really meant to score on that. Scoring from a corner is exceptionally rare.
Yeah I would agree. I was just saying that it was special to get that kind of pace and spin on the ball. That’s something very few females can do consistently. She has always been an exceptional set piece taker.

I don't think I've ever seen this angle before. You may never see a more perfect cross than that your whole life.

Yeah I’ve seen that one before. I’ve searched YouTube from time to time looking for the perfect video of that play with Ian Darke’s brilliant capture and call of the moment. Everything I’ve seen is grainy in one way or another.

I’ll never forget where I was and who I was with (my daughters). We all used to be Rapinoe fans.

I think for me that goal is second to the Landon Donovan goal against Algeria:

Why do I keep having to link study after study:

The suburbs, on the average have shifted blue. I guess we are going to have to turn this into a political post but you guys brought it up.

Suburban soccer families, on the average, are Democrats.

And if we get back to this USA/Mexico "superspreader" I would estimate 70% of the fans were vaxxed, maybe higher. Contrast that with Alabama football, I think you'll be looking at 20%-30%

They didn't qualify for the Olympics so he could have told Chelsea that he's either playing in the Olympics or Gold Cup

Well he could have told them that he wanted to play in either one or both, but they didn't want him playing in either. So he didn't.

I don't understand why this is so hard for you to understand. Chelsea is well into their preseason now. They wanted Pulisic at their training camp with them rather than being off playing in a meaningless (to them) tournament. If the US were in the Olympics and he was playing for them and they were having the kind of success that you foresaw, he would still be in Japan right now, eight days before Chelsea's season starts. Chelsea didn't want that, just like PSG didn't want that for Neymar (and a couple other guys on their roster who could have theoretically played in the Olympics).

Only you could read that article, and have that takeaway, and then project your ridiculously stupid claim. You might want to read the article again. Furthermore, you don’t understand the youth soccer/suburban community. I would bet my mortgage that if you went on a soccer trip with your kids club team and polled all 18 sets of parents, more than 2/3rds of them would be conservatives or republican. I had 4 kids and a combined 30-40 years of club soccer between them, and can probably count on only two hands the number of democrats/liberals. And I’ve coached 100’s more. I don’t run into Democrats very often.

lastly, you might want to stop picking on people from Alabama, as you need to get your own house in order first. While I haven’t looked up the numbers myself (I’m not obsessed with the issue of who is vaccinated and who is not like you are) , there’s plenty of chatter and statistics being thrown around that suggest your comment are made out of political bias. We as a country have a lot of work left to do with getting people vaccinated. We can start in our urban centers.

Not to be dismissive - but I’ll say it is rare at the senior/pro level because of the experience of the keepers and having other players who *might* be able to head it out.

It is a challenging skill but my 14 year old daughter has already scored 4 of those “Olympico” goals on a full 11v11 regulation size field. Once you learn the spin and get the distance down it is a repeatable possibility. She doesn’t usually try to intentionally do it - she’s just trying to put it on the back post - but for younger keepers it’s very hard to defend because they tend to be out of position worrying about the runners and are unable to get back in time.

Sure, rec league makes anything possible.

🤣 - nah, she doesn't play rec (or I'm overpaying A LOT and putting way too many miles on my car). But I wasn't trying to make it about her. I'm just saying there are lots of players out there who could/should be able to place a ball in that general area with some consistency - particularly at the pro-level.

Yeah. Scoring from a corner is no big deal for the shooter. If anything, it supports SMF’s argument about the competition the WNT faces. That’s on the goalkeeper. But hey, Rapinoe gets all the headlines because of her PKs so….why not praise her for scoring off a corner kick too.

My kid earns many PKs for her team, and she never takes the kick. So one of our players has nicely inflated stats thanks to my kid being too generous. Or maybe because shes too scared to take them. What is odd about my kid, when the other girl was out for a few months with knee injury, my kid took the pks and never missed. Only because her coach made her take them. She always hides in the back when it’s time for PK practice or even pks to finish a game.

Yeah that’s one of those things I find weird about soccer. I feel like if you earn a PK, you should get the shot (like basketball). It drives me nuts when some kid works their tail off and gets fouled and then some smug cocky kid comes and grabs the ball and sets up for a PK and the coach supports that.

On the teams I coach, I’ve always had the person who gets fouled take the kick. 1) Because they earned it and 2) because I want a roster of experienced PK takers. It is tough when you start playing in very competitive leagues and that kick could decide the game. But I also think it pays off developmentally (even if they miss) because I want every player on my team to feel like they are critical to the mission.

I’d say the majority of kids want to take the kick but also don’t want the pressure of everyone watching or to let down their teammates down by missing it and so they shy away (I’m guessing your daughter falls in there somewhere). Which is even more reason to give it to the kid that gets fouled. I tell them even if they miss it, we would have never had the PK without their hard work.

I get it. PKs allow time to think. Also, you get blamed for missing and little credit for making.

If I was the official record keeper, for a made penalty I’d give whoever drew the penalty credit for 0.8 goals and the penalty taker credit for 0.2 goals.

Penalty winners don’t get awarded assists, right? I don’t think that’s right. Someone who earns the penalty does all the work and makes the great play, but then someone else on the roster who is the designated penalty taker gets the goal. At the pro level I don’t mind a designated penalty taker…but I hate seeing a player like Christian Pulisic, who’s tough to defend when he’s driving at backs and getting into dangerous areas, draw penalties and then have Jorginho lead the team in premier league goals, but every single one of his goals are from the penalty spot. Think about that. The guy lead Chelsea in Premier League goals, but not one all year from the run of play.

Canada wins the women’s gold. That’s basically like the US winning considering every player played at US colleges and/or the NWSL.

Someone asked me but I didn’t know the answer. Is there a woman on the Canadian team transitioning to be a man? That doesn’t seem right to me, as I’m guessing taking testosterone is illegal? I saw pictures of the player, and she didn’t look like an East German from 1980, as she’s just a little thing that’s starting to look like a man. Still questioning if it’s true and how it’s legal.

Name is Quinn. Non-binary. Not sure of their dead name or gender.

There is a woman from Japan I think, transition to be male on the Washington DC NWSL team. I don't know if she's taking testosterone or anything like that. WAPO loved "celebrating" that fabulous news LOL

Huge US Soccer news…

Josh Sargent is said to be close to inking a deal with Norwich City in the Premier League.

btw, not sure if I posted it because there’s new Hoppe news daily, but it was reported that 13 Premier League Clubs have inquired on him. Let’s hope whoever and wherever he goes to is the right decision for his development.

PSG paying Messi 40 mil per year tax free. So there’s the 1 mil plus per week that he will be making.

ESPN FC is reporting Josh Sargent was removed from training and has a transfer lined up. Norwich City was reported to be that team. Not a bad move at all. Teemu Pukki is the main man for Norwich but he's 31 and they don't have much behind him up front.

If he goes there and Norwich doesn't stay up, I think the Championship would be a good challenge for Josh. 46 games not counting FA and Moose Cup.

I told you this before. You have daughters, therefore you have Joe Yinzer Football as a Soccer Dad. His girls play soccer because its THE sport for girls in this country since there is no football.

My son's team has around 30% parents born outside the US. Not saying they all vote Dem but probably most.

I have told you this before. I cant continue to link study after study. The higher your income, the more degrees you have, the more likely you are to vote Dem. And that's the suburbs, baby! Is it the Pittsburgh suburbs? Maybe not besides Lebo and some others like we've talked about but I will tell you this, poll a youth soccer team and a youth football team or a youth wrestling team and absolutely the soccer parents are more likely to be Dems.
