USA Soccer thread

I told you this before. You have daughters, therefore you have Joe Yinzer Football as a Soccer Dad. His girls play soccer because its THE sport for girls in this country since there is no football.

My son's team has around 30% parents born outside the US. Not saying they all vote Dem but probably most.

I have told you this before. I cant continue to link study after study. The higher your income, the more degrees you have, the more likely you are to vote Dem. And that's the suburbs, baby! Is it the Pittsburgh suburbs? Maybe not besides Lebo and some others like we've talked about but I will tell you this, poll a youth soccer team and a youth football team or a youth wrestling team and absolutely the soccer parents are more likely to be Dems.

With the exception of the black population, nothing is very certain. Barring a bumper sticker, I haven’t a clue how people vote and most demographics just aren’t that helpful. That said, married suburbanites do seem to slightly tilt Republican per the attached links.

To say soccer fans “mostly” lean left, which was his claim, is just a ridiculous thing to say when the overwhelming majority of youth participation is from white suburban families. But it’s one of the silly arguments he’s made through the years here. He’s just trolling and I got sucked down that rabbit hole. I stopped reading his last response when he said Joe yinzer soccer dad blah blah blah. That’s a fallacy too.

Ok, I must have misread your post. So he will earn in excess of 100 million a year with all of his endorsements plus salary. Not too shabby.
Btw…the Lukaku deal to Chelsea was “officially” struck just minutes ago. Announcement to come on Monday.

I love Lukaku. I always have. But I would have been ok if this deal fell through. My reason? The won’t be much resell value on him, as he’s 28. If they could have got Haaland, they’d easily recoup the fee in a few years if he were to move on. Now with Lukaku at Chelsea and Kane on his way to Man City, it opens the door for Man United to get Haaland next summer. Although Madrid has been very smart and have lots of wages coming off their books next year. They’ll have plenty of room for Haaland, Mbappe and Pogba.

I had 4 kids and a combined 30-40 years of club soccer between them, and can probably count on only two hands the number of democrats/liberals. And I’ve coached 100’s more. I don’t run into Democrats very often.
I live in Maryland, so I'm sure a good number of the parents of the kids that played with my daughter over 12 years, from rec to club to travel to high school to college soccer where Dems/libs. But to be honest, I don't know for sure, I don't remember ever knowing any of the other families political leanings, we never talked about it there.

I can see that. It’s Maryland. Those sidelines were a bit different than other sidelines. I’d include eastern NY, teams in VA, NJ, and others in that.

Why do I keep having to link study after study:

And if we get back to this USA/Mexico "superspreader" I would estimate 70% of the fans were vaxxed, maybe higher. Contrast that with Alabama football, I think you'll be looking at 20%-30%
Since you claim to like data, you might find this interesting. Because you subscribe to the above notion, it appears that you’re being duped by state media and dirty left wing politicians who are spreading false narratives.

Well as usual smf hijacked this thread. It's not longer a conversation about US soccer.

In US Soccer news, Josh Sargent officially was sold to Norwich City today. Let's see if he does better than Jozy did at Sunderland.

So where you're at, the parents all talk about politics at the games and on the sidelines? I don't remember even one political discussion all the years, we mostly talked about soccer or whatever else the kids where doing, or maybe about ourselves, like our jobs or something, I never remember political talk.

Yeah. When you spend that much time on the road, it comes out. There were always a few token libs here and there and they took a lot of ribbing…but also wore it with pride.

Again, girls team. Those dads are Yinzers from Washington County, Fayette County, and Southern Allegheny County. They were good athletes, they dont have sons, so girls soccer is there thing.

I would say suburban boys' soccer parents are 60/40 to 65/35 Dem. Girls' soccer parents somewhere 55/45 either way.

Have you done a peer reviewed scientific study? LOL! Why do you care so much to say that soccer fans are liberals?

US Soccer ranked #10 in latest rankings. FWIW.
I think it's deserved. Unlike college football, where it's just an opinion poll of who will probably beat who, in this system they use, a less talented team gets credit for actual on the field achievements, like winning two regional tournaments in one summer.

Well, data can be a funny thing. For example, there are over 250 nations ranked. So our current ranking puts us in the top 5% of the world. Does anyone believe that??

we always talk about how bad our soccer is…but is it really? Our culture expects us to be the best in everything. Although that mindset is sadly weaning. American exceptionalism is not trendy.

There's really only 80-100 legitimate national teams. Aruba and Montserrat don't count in my opinion. Many of those small islands have teams which would not make the NCAA Tournament.

That said, this is the most talented American team ever. Top 10? No. But given the right draw and a little luck, I could see them making a semifinal. Not predicting that, just saying I think its possible they beat say Colombia in the Round of 16 and then upset, say England in PKs.

Maybe our soccer isn't that bad. I find that the most serious USA soccer fans are the ones who spew the most hate on USA soccer, there's probably many European and South American countries, not as good as us. But USAMNT fans will argue to the death that we suck more than anyone, LOL

Top 5%? what does that mean? If Coastal Carolina is ranked #10 and has a 10-0 record, should a 7-3 Georgia team be ranked ahead of them, because most people would pick Georgia to win a game between the two. But ranking is not only about who would win a matchup today. USAMNT won two regional tournaments this summer, maybe they deserve to be ranked ahead of some Euro teams that could "probably" beat them, but have done nothing significant recently

Wrong. Mostly Wexford and Pine suburbanites with norwin and Penn Trafford mixed in, along with USC, CM, BO and Peters mixed in. Only libs that jumped out at me was one set of parents from Wexford (mom was Canadian and dad worked for CMU), one set from TJ, and a mom from Shaler (of all places). No yinzers as They never filtered through the top club teams. And yinzers are Dems anyway so it makes sense.

How do you know they're libs, they talk about it or you're just guessing based on these factors you mention.

We talked about it all the time. Forgot about one guy from moon. One of the best guys you’ll ever meet. He was a teacher and so was his wife. Big teachers Union folks. I think he was a union rep at some level. He got ribbed like you wouldn’t believe. It was always in good fun. But he was outnumbered so he took it in stride.

I get it, some of my conservative friends give me a hard time about being a career, federal employee too. But I actually enjoy that I make double what some of them make, yet they'd "never work for the gubmint". Of course some make double what I make, :) It's not a big deal for me, because I am all over the place politically, like I hate Trump and I hate woke people too :)

Sounds great but I dont believe you. I'm not sure what types of people discuss something as polarizing as politics with people they don't know very well.

While I am sure there are plenty of rich suburbanites on those cup teams, I have always noticed more "yinzer" parents at the girls' practices and games. I know several football/wrestling/baseball Yinzer dads who have girls who play Cup soccer. Soccer is THE A #1 sport for girls, well especially white girls.

You have a lot of preconceived notions. I'm in Maryland, so maybe it's different. My daughter played for 12 years, from U8 to college. My experience was that we didn't talk politics at all, but I'm sure we had mixed politics, conservative and liberal, and there where always black girls, on all her teams, club and school.

I don’t disagree. Pittsburgh is very white. So the sidelines I’m used to are different than Pitt79’s which was my original point. That said, maybe politics are more easily discussed when a circle of people organically realize that they all share the same ideals because it’s blatantly obvious. That’s been my experiences. So we comfortably talked about politics over plenty of beers.

But the high end club teams are naturally going to be predominantly suburban. Kids from deep into Washington, Beaver or Greene County don’t find their way to the tops clubs. Same with the city schools. The city schools don’t feed the high end clubs. So what you’re left with is the suburban communities. And those communities aren’t “mostly” left as you stated.

in any event, i think your theory is flawed based on my experiences. But it’s all anecdotal because people aren’t doing polls of the political leanings of the soccer community.

and your comment that kicked this off regarding those in attendance in a game in Las Vegas is also flawed…given that the demographics of the unvaccinated aren’t what you thought they were.

It's pretty obvious that neither SMF nor 79 have any idea how much time the parents of players on these travel teams spend together. It's like they think that when they all travel 300 miles for some tournament (something that they do numerous times each year) that they only see each other at the games and when they leave the field they all go their separate ways until they see them again at the field for the next game.

Especially on th highest level teams as you know. The travel is all over the country and a couple times per month. You multiply that over 10 years, and they’re essentially an extended family.

additionally, we would have had a field day if SMF was on the road with us.

You're wrong there, my daughter played on travel teams a couple years, where we went away, stayed at motels over the weekend, etc. and seriously, politics weren't really discussed, if they where extensively discussed I wasn't in those conversations. So yeah. I HAVE BEEN THERE.

My daughter wasn't on the highest level travel team, after 3 years of travel in 8-10 grade she wanted to quit, she felt like the coaches where nuts and acted like your whole life should be soccer, and this was on lower level travel. I also know people who's kids are on higher level travel and they do sick stuff like drive an hour or more each way, just to practice, I'd refuse to do that. My daughter played 12 years, 3 travel, until she got sick of it, the rest was rec. But she was all conference 4 year starter for high school, and did play one year of college, in college her lack of training was exposed as her teammates where all the big travel team types obsessed with soccer, but in the end, who cares, none of them ever got anything for playing soccer, not even scholarships. She played for a national power NJCAA school that finished 5th in the nation the year she played, she was actually recruited, even though from a small, really bad high school that played at the lowest level. Her college team was so good, that even though she rode the bench, she played almost every game, and even scored a goal, because they won by an average score of 7-1 in the regular season. It was fun times following her all those years overall. So I did experience the traveling to some degree, but we never travelled farther from Baltimore than PA, NJ or VA.

I actually think kids sports culture is nuts today, my parents would never pay these fees and never travel to a hotel out of town to play kids sports, they complained about the $10 fee it took to register for a league back in the 70s :)

This thread has come full circle since the OP…it’s being reported that Aston Villa and Tottenham are prepared to match Juventus’ price for Wes McKinnie. And Tottenham is prepared to exceed Villa’s offer.

Villa buying players from Juve? I know times were bad in Serie A but geez.

BTW, first 2 road games TV announced

El Salvador CBSSN
Honduras Paramount+

Sucks to have to buy Paramount+ for a month but still an upgrade from bein Sport

Paramount is worth it being that it’s the only way to see all the UCL games.

Josh Sargent scored 2 goals for Norwich yesterday. Hell has frozen over.

that said it was in a 6-0 rout in a Moose Cup match. If Norwich is beating someone 6-0, I’m not sure it’s much of anything. Someone from England’s 4th division? A USL club?

edit: I just looked it up. It was Bournemouth!! Wow have they fallen. But I’m sure they didn’t play their top players. If you’re Bournemouth and in the English Championship , promotion is more important than a Cup run.

I watched some of their first 2 EPL games and he didnt play. I had a feeling he wasnt going to play much in the EPL. He reminds me A LOT of Jozy Altidore, young talented kid who just can't cut it in Europe. A little too slow and not quite technical enough. Will probably be playing back home for new St. Louis FC in a few years.

As for Paramount+, CBSSN airs the game later that day. I rarely watch games live anyway.
