USA Soccer thread

By the way, interesting to note that Matthew Hoppe is not on the US roster for the upcoming qualifiers. Supposedly Brentford is seriously interested in bringing him in, but has he even been practicing for Schalke? If not that would explain the non-call up.

I loved Hoppe in the Gold Cup. Would be cool to see him move to Brentford. I could get behind a club like Brentford.

Off subject, kinda, is it too early to say I think Veljko Petkovic could potentially wear the US jersey one day? I think his family moved to the US when he was in middle school or early HS so I'm not sure when he's eligible for citizenship but he's the best college player in the nation IMO and there are former college players that play for the USMNT from time to time. I'm not suggesting he would ever be a 1st teamer or anything close to that but wouldn't be surprised to see him called in for a friendly or a January camp in 4-5 years.

And what a glorious train wreck it was!
I only have two friends who support Arsenal. I don’t say anything to them. I know how painful it must be. Hard to believe they have spent more this summer than every other EPL club.

but I can’t help but think of a time early last year when I was in downtown Charlotte, or it might have been the year before, and I ran into some young Arsenal supporters at a really cool brewery. I tried to strike up a conversation with them and I mentioned David Luiz playing for them (gladly) how I was a Chelsea supporter, etc. They all started laughing at me and aggressively talking smack. I was with my family so what was I going to do? I mean, what would I do anyway, as I’m an adult and if these clowns want to act like jerks then let them. But I think karma is a bitch sometimes and those assholes deserve what they are getting today. Lol.

Anyone give up on Arsenal yet? My lord what a train wreck.

I said earlier that if they don't start playing better soon that Arteta won't be employed much longer, and it wouldn't surprise me now if the ax falls during this upcoming international break.

Twitter speculation was that he was going to be sacked at halftime today. Lol.

Norwich is next. Lose that and they're still on 0 points after 4 games and though its super early, man, you'd have to think relegation is a possibility.
Norwich? There’s not a person alive who felt their stint in the league this year was anything more than an Isaiah Epps one and done.

“Pulisic is released today and will go to the national team if he can provide a negative test,” Tuchel said. “We hope he can play some minutes.”

he has been asymptomatic.

You know, I have said in the past about how the schedule that they US got was just about as bad as it could be, but here is at least one good thing. In the first window the US plays at El Salvador and at Honduras. Both of them are on England's "amber list", so someone like Pulisic can play in those games and not have to quarantine when he goes back to England. Costa Rica and Mexico are both on the "red list". If the US was playing one of those countries in this round players would have to quarantine when they got back to England. Which you may have noticed has caused pretty much all of the European clubs to declare that they are not releasing players to countries that are on the "red list".

In other words, if the US was playing either at Mexico or at Costa Rica in this first set of games none of the European players would be allowed to play. Which would be a disaster for the team.

FIFA allows clubs to not release players on the "red list?" That seems like it would majorly eff up WCQ.

I posted about Antonio playing for Jamaica…but either them or the place that they are playing are on the list…so he wasn’t released. I heard that the other day.

No, as a matter of fact FIFA does not allow it. But so far the clubs are saying that they don't care. Because they don't think it's fair that they lose guys for league games because they have to quarantine when they get back from the international games.

For instance if the US were playing at Mexico instead of at Honduras in this first set of games then when Pulisic got back to England he would be required to quarantine in a designated hotel for the next 10 days. Which would mean that he would miss two Chelsea games. And the clubs are having none of that. As it is he will have to undergo additional testing when he gets back and follow some other protocols, but he will be able to practice with the team and play in the games because El Salvador and Honduras aren't on the "red list", they are on the "amber list" (and the US is on the "green list").

Right now they are sort of at an impasse, FIFA is telling teams to release players and the clubs are saying that they won't, so obviously something could change in the next couple of days. It will be interesting to see what happens if the clubs don't relent.

I don't understand this. The clubs are FIFA clubs. They have to adhere to FIFA rules. So you're saying a club would tell FIFA and the US, "we have decided to break the FIFA rule and will not release Pulisic for games in X and Z." Couldn't FIFA fine them for that? I know we're in uncharted territory but its critical to the integrity of the World Cup that the best players are allowed to play in qualifying games.

We will see how this ends up. I am leaning toward predicting the players/ FAs/ FIFA getting the EPL or the British government to back down.

You could start nearly every one of your posts with the same sentence.

FIFA does not run the clubs. The English FA or the German soccer federation aren't FIFA entities in any way and they do not report to FIFA. The clubs follow the FIFA rules because they have agreed with FIFA to do so, in exchange for other considerations. The clubs are saying that nothing in the agreement requires them to do something that will leave them without their best players for multiple matches. FIFA doesn't even bother to argue against that, they just say that they clubs should be willing to take a hit in the best interests of FIFA making a lot of money, er, I mean for the good of the game.

Unless they can get the governments to agree to bend the rules for soccer players (which in some places is absolutely a political non-starter) the clubs are saying that if anyone has to take a hit it should be the entity that is getting the (mostly) free labor rather than the people who are actually paying the bills.

By the way, if it is critical to the integrity of the World Cup that the best players be allowed to play in the qualifiers why is it not similarly critical to the integrity of the EPL or La Liga or the Bundesliga that the best players be available to play in all of the regularly scheduled matches?

1. Clubs have to follow FIFA laws. What are you talking about? FIFA is the governing body. The English FA is a member of FIFA. Chelsea is a member of the FA. Surely you understand this. If Chelsea decided to go out and spend a billion on players and made no effort to break even financially, guess what FIFA does to them?

2. Clubs and FA's can reschedule games. I know there arent many open dates and its not ideal but geez, add a week or 2 to the end of the season or something. It isn't rocket science. The best players need to be available for qualifying.

Not a damn thing. Which you'd know if you paid any attention to this. Barcelona claims $1.6 billion in debts. They got that way because in many years their wage bill has exceeded their revenues. How many times has FIFA done anything about it? Oh, yeah, that's right. None.

Of course the reason for that is that FIFA has nothing, and I do mean absolutely nothing, to do with Financial Fair Play. That's a UEFA rule. You understand that UEFA and FIFA are not the same thing, right?

I didn't think so.

Pulisic tested negative and was released from Quarantine on Saturday.

He practiced with the US today.

He got out while the getting was good, because England put the US on the red list today. I wonder if Chelsea will ask the US to not play him in the last game and send him back to England to get his quarantine over faster, as some other clubs that have released their players have done?

That sucks.

UEFA is a member of FIFA. UEFA cannot create its own rules unless FIFA approves.

Matthew Hoppe goes to LaLiga and will play for Mallorca. They currently sit 6th in the table.

Don't quite understand this one. Pros/cons for all parties? Seems like a lateral move
Shalke was relegated. The 2nd league in Germany is a good league as I understand. But going to the Spanish first division is ideal as long as he plays. That’s the key.

Btw, Mallorca I believe has an American majority owner (maybe?) with Steve Nash and stu Holden as minority owners. So there’s the connection

edit: the club is owned by the owner of the Phoenix Suns and has another American as co-owner and Chairman.

Schalke is terribly ran of recent. They went through 5 managers last season, 86 goals against and a -61 goal differential, a whopping 19 points below the drop. Hard to believe they were in Champions League in 18/19. Hoppe is smart to leave as was McKennie.

Yeah, I'm not sure how anyone could think this was a head scratcher. His team got relegated. They were looking to shed salary. He is young and had some worth on the transfer market. Win-win. Assuming he plays for Mallorca, win-win-win.

I don't know if anyone has seen this yet or not, but Pulisic did not travel with the US team to El Salvador.

Just another thing that the self proclaimed 🐐 was wrong about.
