Who Has the Best Fish Fry in the Pittsburgh Area?

I like St Elizabeth Seton or St Margeret of Scotland in my area (Carnegie/Green Tree). My hands down favorite when I worked downtown was Epiphany Catholic next to the arena.

I saw St. Elizabeth and thought of my Parish.. but in North Huntingdon.. they do a great job.

Not a fish fry but the best local fish sandwiches near us in the North Hills are at Kuhn's in Ingomar.
I've not had but intriguing... will have to try. Beer batter or breaded?

And I'll offer up my regular gotos, the Perrytowne Tavern (beer batter) and TBones in Wexford (breaded).

The most legendary I recall from my youth was an obscure place called King's just over the Ohio border called Brookfield (?) near Pulaski twp. Frighteningly large portions and twice fried if I recall. I had buddies that went to college near there and we'd make road trips there, there was a convenience store next to it that sold 6 packs to anyone who could pay for em, and then the fish sammies... oh, the pleasure, oh the pain later...

ST. Malachy.. McKee’s Rocks/Coraopolis...I miss those Friday’s back in the Day.
Don’t have them down here in Texas!
I'm grabbing a fish at St. Malachy's tomorrow. They are one of the few around that serve on Ash Wednesday. Most start this Friday.

More beer battered. It really is quite good. Usually very busy.

Me and 2 buddies of mine made it a mission a couple years ago to hit up a diffetent place every friday. In order.

1.) E-Town in Etna. #1 and it's not even close
2.) Nied's in Lawrenceville
3.) Emil's Lounge in Rankin. They close EARLY for safety.
4.) Doridos in South Park
5.) Starlite Lounge in blawnox (homemade pierogi's are amazing)

Wholey's and North Park Lounge are good too. E-Town is so good, at least once a Lent I eat it for Lunch and Dinner.

There was a bar in Beechview - Nick’s tavern. An absolute hole. Was basically a numbers joint disguised as a bar. But they had the best (and gigantic) fish sandwiches ever. 1 sandwich had more than enough for fish for 2 people. People used to come from all around the city. I’d kill to have 1 of those. Dam.

I love Dorido’s, but I think the best fish sandwich can be found at Alexion’s off of Noblestown Road near Bishop Canevin. It’s just a nothing special type of bar but their fish sandwiches are really, really good. Wagner’s Market in Hampton also has a nice fish sammy.

I expect some may laugh or scoff but Kuhn’s Market on Banksville has a really good fish sandwich. Not sure if the other locations have them. They’re busy every Friday but lent will be insane. So much so I won’t go near it.
You are not kidding. Last year, during Lent, I went there to pick up a fish sandwich for me and my wife at 4 PM and they were out of fish. I could not believe it!

The Shop ‘n Save down in Heidelberg has Wholly’s and I think that’s better anyway. Also, they usually have some of through at least 6 PM.

Might have to check that out. I’ve gotten the fish a cpl times from the shop n save in Castle Shannon. Thought it was ok but strongly prefer Kuhn’s.

I think I remember hearing that Nied’s closed down earlier this year.

Check the one in Heidelberg. I think that’s pretty good. We like to stop at fish fries, but that’s a pretty good alternative.

Big Jim's in Greenfield is another one we liked.

Thanks Doc, I didn't know Nieds closed. I guess I wohld have found our in a few weeks when we would have went again. Sad to see the place go, but as the articles say, hard for these small companies to keep those old buildings up to code. I'm sure some new fancy hipster place will take over and turn it into a tiny food or craft brew bar.

For those saying Kuhn's Market, you are 100% right that is good fish sandwich and it is huge. They closed the one in Moon Twp which sucks as i work out here and now I need to find a new option. I used to work at the Kuhns on Banksville in High School. They are a very underrated store for fish and groceries. They destroy Giant Eagle's prices.

The best place for fish sandwich used to be the original Atria's in Mt Lebo back when it was a single unit whole in the wall dive bar. It was fantastic. Then new owners fixed the place up and expanded and the fish sandwich changed.

Dorido's is better than Saint Joan of Arc without question, but Saint Joan of Arc is still a very good fish sandwich. Do not waste your time going to St Louise De Marrillac, huge wait for average fish.

It is sad how many of these places mentioned I have been to that i could probably review most of them. lol

This is one of the things I missed when I moved to South Carolina, or even West Virginia, I was always used to either Fish Fries or restaurants catering to seafood items on Fridays.

And in fact I believe I had a well received and famous post when BC was leaving the Big East about "good luck finding a fish sandwich in Greensboro, NC" since many cases the ACC tourney Friday games would be during Lent.

St Malachy? Isn’t that the blue bombers? I think either Michael Keaton or norm from cheers had a St malachy tee shirt on in the movie Gung Ho.

I'm curious. Is this as big of a thing outside of Western PA?
Never heard of anything like this in Eastern PA except at a one off private/club bars / social clubs that are associated with a church and Catholic school located off premises.

Fasnacht's are big around here during Lent. Bakeries take orders weeks ahead open early to large lines of people picking up their orders all day long. No order no Fasnacht's.

The Eastern PA rural farm towns have large German populations.
