Who Has the Best Fish Fry in the Pittsburgh Area?

Me and 2 buddies of mine made it a mission a couple years ago to hit up a diffetent place every friday. In order.

1.) E-Town in Etna. #1 and it's not even close
2.) Nied's in Lawrenceville
3.) Emil's Lounge in Rankin. They close EARLY for safety.
4.) Doridos in South Park
5.) Starlite Lounge in blawnox (homemade pierogi's are amazing)

Wholey's and North Park Lounge are good too. E-Town is so good, at least once a Lent I eat it for Lunch and Dinner.

Shout out and a thank you BigBird. I stopped at E-town in Etna and had a fish sandwich and it was excellent. I will definitely stop there again.

Thanks. I may hit up ETown or Starlite this week for lunch on Friday.

St Agnes in North Huntingdon is the best of the best... hands down. Everyone else is a pretender.

I stopped at ETown today. My god the fish sammich was big, nice cooked a bit bland (hello Frank's red hot) but very good. Clean tasting both fish and not greasy tasting. Also, their fries....were actually crispy. Which is a very good thing.

We’re in Chalfont PA this weekend (north of Philly) visiting our son. We asked the bartender at a restaurant (born and raised here) if there are any fish fry’s. After a pause, he said “Fish fry?”. LOL

The fish is great, nice and flaky.

I've had soggy fries there as well. They're hit or miss. The fish is a hit every time. I never get the 2nd bun. 1 sandwich and 1 just the fish.

I expect some may laugh or scoff but Kuhn’s Market on Banksville has a really good fish sandwich. Not sure if the other locations have them. They’re busy every Friday but lent will be insane. So much so I won’t go near it.
Will check it out. Isalys used to have good ones.

I’m going to check this out. I have to.

Alexions and doridos is the best I’ve had locally. But flakey fish, huge portions and a good sub roll are my criteria. (Although Alexions has all of that on fresh Italian bread instead). Your list is appreciated. It’s saturday but so what. I may start to check them out today. Etna is easy to get to.

Alexion’s in Carnegie, and let’s not forget Wolley’s or the Oyster House Downtown!

The Oyster House isn't what it used to be. Years ago, I used to go at lunch to get the Big Fish sandwich and I had one not that long ago and it was disappointing.

This Friday, most of the churches will be closed for lunch on Good Friday. So, if you are in the east suburbs, and don't mind narrow streets, the North Braddock Volunteer Fire Hall has amazing fish and halushki to take out. Tasty and big, and all the atmosphere of original Pittsburgh you could want.

I was at St. Patrick's Church in Canonsburg last night. I'm not gonna say that it's the best, since there are so many good ones, but I can say that they're very, very good. They offer a seafood platter which was very filling. Sometimes when fried fish is prepared by amateurs, it can be greasy - but theirs wasn't greasy at all. They had halushki and pieroghi, too.....

I had the fish sandwich at Dorido's for lunch today and it is good, but I still give the edge to E-town.

You can get a 2nd bun?????

I heard the Oyster house isn’t what it used to be. They’ve gone down in portion size.

This thread inspired me to knock another place off the list today. I decided to try Big Jim’s down in Panther Hollow in greenfield. It was ok. Nothing great. It was two approx 8 inch pieces of fish stacked on top of each other. It wasn’t the thickest flakiest filets but it was not bad either. The kicker though was it was on one of those soft D’taliano buns that you buy in an 8 pack in the grocery store. That’s a deal breaker.

The Cole slaw was awesome though.

The Last Call in Canonsburg used to have really good ones. I went out of my way last week to get one there and it was completely different. I won’t go back. They used to be big and meaty on a great hoagie bun. But they are no longer meaty and the breading seemed like it was Italian seasoned bread crumbs.

Willies Tavern in Valencia has very good fish sammys.
My God!! I used to go there 50+ years ago. They'd get perch from Erie in on Thursday nite, fry it up until gone Friday evening. I recall seeing 30 people lined up on the porch in zero degree weather. The original owner started it with GI bill funds. I think he ended up in a restaurant in Boca Raton.
I owned a nice old home in the village there from 72-74. We'll give it a shot this Lent.

It is not that I am religious, I am not. Just a great opportunity to reestablish some "discipline" to my dietary and caloric intakes.

Same reason people have Apple Pie with a big double scoop of Ice Cream and put Sweet N' Lo in their coffee.

Discipline. You have to draw the line somewhere?
