** We knew this season wasn’t going to be an easy one.

** In order to enjoy it, we also knew we wanted to see games where our men played with a nice chunk of fight. Many, including myself, said wins or losses wouldn’t really matter so much as long we could show we could play near the level of most of our opponents.

** Most of all, I think we all just want to have fun watching the Panthers play basketball.

** Tonight’s game against the Hoopies pretty much checked all of those boxes.

** Tonight was fun. Perhaps the fun was boosted by the amplification that comes from low expectations. Or maybe it was the fun that comes from cutting a 20 point lead to 2 points. I wonder if it would have been nearly as fun had we led by 2 at the half before surrendering to a 9 point deficit. But it was fun nonetheless.

** For tonight, that’s certainly good enough for me.

** For the future, there’s more to consider. There’s no doubt that the second half of tonight’s game was by far the best the Panthers have played this year. Nothing else has come close.

** What makes that even better is that it wasn’t just that the Panthers played well, but they played in response to adversity.

** But what needs to matter most from this fun night is where our Panthers go with it.

** Going forward, the Panthers need to defend in more games like they did in the second half this evening.

** The Hoopies scored 15 points in the final 15 minutes. That was almost good enough to pull a huge upset.

** And while I’m adding kudos to the Panthers, it’s also worth noting that we out rebounded a typically tough Hoopie team, and handled pressure well. In fact, the notorious Hoopie pressure wasn’t all that much of an issue in the second half.

** Maybe most of all, we played wonderful team basketball in the second half.

** If only we could have hit a few more shots …

** But when we did miss shots, Ryan was there to clean things up quite a few times.

** Ryan was nothing short of splendid once again. I’d like to think of myself as a Ryan Luther fan from all the way back to his freshman year. But he has completely surpassed even my highest expectations for him at any point prior.

** We already knew Ryan could hit some shots, but his ability to battle in the paint has been quite remarkable.

** Kudos to Coach Stallings and staff for whatever buttons they pushed in the second half. I’m not sure we did anything particularly differently. But we certainly came out and executed in the second half more confidently and effectively.

** And we do have to remember that this was still a 9 point loss. Progress can really be represented when we can actually turn our second half effort into a win.

** I suspect this game will inspire a little more hope in our Panthers this season. There’s nothing wrong with that of course. But don’t begrudge someone like myself for hanging on to wait for a little more evidence that this second half effort represents evidence of progress or a trend.

** This leads to what IS most important for the Panthers ... which is for them to turn this second half into a trend.

** If they can do this, there just might be many more fun nights at the Pete this year, just like tonight.

Thanks, DT. I have to say it was fun to watch the second half and watch these kids take it to the hated hoopies. I also have to wonder that if their 2 best players hadn't been in foul trouble for quite a bit of the second half, would we have had the success we did have by winning the second half? I think those 2 guys deserved to be out of the lineup because they did commit those fouls, so that's on them. And we took advantage of it. That's all it was, and that's an improvement over what we have seen so far this year from this group of kids.

I was particularly impressed with the uptick in our defensive pressure and rebounding. That is certainly encouraging going forward.

I think overall, these kids showed a lot of improvement, heart and guts throughout the game, especially in the second half. That's all that matters to me. I don't care about if they win or lose this year all that much. Well, maybe a little. ;)

The best way to turn that good second half effort into a win is to not stink the joint up in the first half. That second half was, indeed, the best half of basketball we've played all year. That first half might not have been the worst, but it's on the short list. I don't know that we were really even doing anything different, we were just doing it a lot better.

What was the breakdown of the crowd? I was in FL watching the game.

The announced attendance was 7,748 which was perhaps was completely, for the first time in a very long time, the actual number of people who came through the turnstiles at the gate.

I'd say that only about a 1/4 of these fans were Hoopie fans. That's maybe a little high. Maybe 1/5.

Did they put tarps in the upper deck? It kind of looked like it on TV.

No. The upper decks were open. People were sitting there between the baselines. The corners were pretty much empty, although there were some people in the Zoo overflow section. I can't see the end zone seats behind us, but I would guess they were mostly empty as well.

And hey, here's something else kind of crowd related. Someone needs to tell the people running the show at the Pete that miking up the band and playing it over the PA does not actually hide the fact that there are lots of people there rooting for the other team. Whoever came up with that idea needs to scrap it asap.

It was fun. It was competitive. It was a great atmosphere. Right now, I will take all of that, because that is great entertainment.

But you start to see guys like Carr and Stevenson against this level of competition and think "you know, maybe there is a chance" come next year or the year after.

Here's another thing. It was a really weird game tonight for Jevon Carter. Ten minutes into the game he scored for the first time. I said, man, that was pretty good keeping him off the score sheet for ten minutes. Over the next ten minutes he scored 17 points. In the second half he only scored two. So that was 30 minutes where he didn't really do much of anything. But damn, in that ten minutes he was close to unstoppable.

I completely agree with your first paragraph.

I understand your point with the second paragraph, but the worry for me is that you just named 2 guys!! (and there isn't much fitting that bill coming in next year so far.).

But then when I point things like this out, folks like @TD_istheman say things like "Go Root for TCU."

Not to criticize your per se Owt, but for consistency sake, shouldn't someone such as yourself call out fanboy stuff in the other direction as well.

I dunno DT. I wasn't reading anything more into it that what I posted. Contrary to what some may think, I ain't that complicated and ain't that critical at times.

Edit. I guess my expectations are so low, whatever scraps of breadcrumbs I can get I am willing to accept.

Truth is, I'm dragging you into my battle which isn't quite fair.

But in the past, you have taken many to task for not allowing any criticism of Dixon. I never agreed with you -- I always thought fair and legit criticism of Dixon was to be found on this board. I even thought I offered it often.

But tonight, I criticized Stallings for using most of his timeout when WVU went up by 20 to yell at a ref at @TD_istheman replied to me by saying "Go root for TCU."

This is exactly the kind of knee-jerk "fanboy stuff" reaction you used to rally against, while you would argue that too many on the board were not open to any criticism against Dixon. In fact, you took me to task on this, even when it wasn't a battle you were a part of. I was wondering if you would apply your same standard here, even though this is another battle you are not a part of.

The team played hard tonight and fought the whole time. If some of those threes in the second half go down could have been an upset. The team was fun to watch and the atmosphere was great. The zoo was fired up tonight. I hope fans start supporting the young team. H2P!

The Zoo was indeed very, very good.

Again, it is just right now, that is so miniscule, I am looking for any positives that the kids we have can play or have the potential to play on this level. I am not into the minutiae of details. And yes, I thought Jamie over TO'd and over controlled every situation. But come on man, those critiques were based on 13 years of empirical experience, with Stallings, there are so many bigger issues and such a smaller sample size at this point why would I care?

Telling that Bob Nutting was at the Pitt game but wouldn't show up to answer angry fans questions about the state of his baseball team.

OK -- but based on your past standard, is it ok for @TD_istheman to say "go root for TCU" to another poster for making a relatively minor criticism of Stallings?

1)If we play like we did in the 2nd half every game(and that's a big if), we can very well win a few ACC games and surprise some teams.

2)If we had just made a few gimme baskets we missed like the easy layups and alley-oops, who knows if we pull it out. Those misses ended up being huge.

3)As someone who is obviously very negative most of the time and pessimistic, I will be the first to say that I was surprised, pleasantly surprised at what I watched in the 2nd half. When we were down by 20 points late in the 1st half, I assumed wrongly that Stallings would do nothing and the team would get blown out bad. I'm glad I was wrong. It was the 1st half of basketball all year that I was cheering loudly in front of the television. It brought back for a few minutes all the exciting backyard brawls I had watched. It was fun.

4)Let's hope this game is a turning point for this squad and good things start to happen.

That is all.

I dunno DT. I mean, I don't care, I didn't see or pay attention to that post or thread I guess. I told Pittfan85 to do the same because he is bringing up every TCU win in another thread. That is unreasonable. As for criticizing Stallings, I criticized Stallings. So should I also go root for TCU? I don't think things are that black and white, and neither do you? So I really don't appreciate the inference that I am one of those people who sit in that arena, where it is either black or white or in this case "all Jamie's Fault!" or "all Kevin's Fault!" because I am not like that, never have been, never will be in anything, whether it is Pitt basketball or politics or whatever.

I know you have criticized Stallings and I also don't think things are black and white. So for the sake of @TD_istheman , does it mean you are a Jamie lover just because you offer any criticism of Stallings at all? I'd really like to know your take on this.

I am no Stallings fan, but for the first time I noticed some tactical differences. (I hated the technical, but maybe it fired up the team).

He had the entry pass on the inbounds passed to someone else on the baseline. It was a simple thing to deal with pressure. He also had Luther bring the ball up in the 2nd half for some possessions and that alleviated the press. I know both are very simple but at least it shows he made some pre game and mid game adjustments.

Luther was an absolute beast. The kid plays with so much heart. And carr is already a good player to build around.

As others have said, last night served at least as a reminder that pitt basketball can be fun.

I found myself saying that "Okay, I actually like what KS is having these guys do."

I’m not sure there is much to draw from a one game sample.
A game ago we got forced to overtime against mt st Mary’s.

Wvu is a good team, but the foul trouble limited them from attacking like they did in the first building a 20 point lead.

Always nice to make shots and stay competitive.
When the game was on the line, wvu just went to an extra gear we couldn’t keep up with.

Settling for threes was not a great plan.

Good to see that Luther was still productive AND efficient against a good team. That is my big takeaway. I didn’t watch that game, but it is encouraging to see “only” 11 turnovers

Easily the most effort I have seen this year in the second half. An example of why playing schools like WVU and PSU always matters. It doesn't take long, even with a bunch of new kids, to see the passion come out.

Pleased to see a more aggressive approach on offense. More driving to the hoops and even a couple of back screens and alley-oops. Converting them would have been nice, but one step at a time. That approach got WVU in foul trouble (admittedly with some help from the refs) but it was great to see. Wilson-Frame just seemed to drive and score at will, wish he would do it more.

Actually saw a lot of fight from unexpected guys on the boards. Stewart was actually battling hard. Good signs.

I do think Pitt got a little carried away in the moment in the last four minutes. Instead of continuing to drive, they began to get caught up in the excitement of hitting three's. Except that they didn't hit them. With the foul trouble WVU had we should have challenged them more.

Did Pitt a)miss a chance to win or b) play better without Chukwuka? We will never know.

I expect we will see a few games where the team plays this well, but also our share where they get buried. At least I see some hope and passion and even maybe some skill sets that will work. I would still kill to see a decent big man on the court. Luther is good but he is a four, not a true big.

Of course there is no mention that their inspired comeback was fueled by an over zealous and corrupt officiating crew who were hell-bent on keeping us from playing aggressive defense and as a result our entire starting lineup was on the bench for a majority of the second half. No, no mention of that at all. ESP

Oh silly me. How stupid of me to think that the owner of the Pirates actually show up and talk to the fans once a year at his own PiratesFest event.

Just for the simple fact that you are stuck on the Go root for TCU jab, commenting on Dixon, AGAIN, makes me wonder if you are still not pining for Jamie. Who cares what TD thinks. Let it go.

What was to me the burning question of the night was would Pitts freshman ( team ) be able to hold there own against a top 20 team that pressures the ball . A little shaky in the beginning , but as the game progressed they found their footing and put a scare into mighty WV . It wasn’t a win , but these “ little panthers !” grew up before our eyes tonight . These guys can play with the WUVs of the world not just the St Mary’s . The road will be full of bumps from here , but I think we’re seeing the foundation of a promising team .
I’ve not been a KS enthusiast however I do defend him against ignorant personal attacks and and those who blame Pitts predicament entirely on him . He took a hugh step in shutting up all those people tonight . He hasn’t been a D1 coach all these yrs because he doesn’t know how to coach even though most on this board think they know how to coach better then him .
Just like Obie Wan Kenobi he's our only hope for winning bb in the near future and outwardly rooting for his failure serves no purpose . If he adds a couple of more players in the Carr Stevenson mold Pitt will be back sooner than anyone expected . Davis and Stewart and hopefully in a yr or two Brown he might actually have something .

Exactly , and we are never going to have the top team in the ACC, Dixon wasn't either that was proven, best conference top to bottom. We need to hope he can get in in the tourney most year and nit the others. Make a run now and then.
