Recruiting Update Transfer visitor update (Sun. AM)

It's going to take some time to unpack exactly what we saw this weekend in terms of visitors. Guys were visiting, then they weren't, then they maybe were, then they showed up (or maybe they didn't). And this isn't just a product of incomplete information from the outside; a bunch of people in around the Pitt football program have said that this five-day visit period - Jan. 4-8 - has been pretty crazy and hectic as transfers who plan to enroll midyear scramble to see as much as they can during the short window.

As such, I've confirmed two visitors for this weekend:

Florida WR Daejon Reynolds and LSU DB/RB Derrick Davis. They were both here. We know that for certain. I'm still working to figure out who else came to town. There might have been one or two more, but things changed so quickly and so often that it was tough to track (to the point where even the Pitt staff took the approach of "We'll know for sure that they're visiting when they actually get here"). I'm sure some more info will break through today, and we'll see what comes out. But this has been quite a weekend.

Projected Record

Just looking over the remaining schedule my prediction is we will finish with 19 wins and 11 ACC wins. Just glancing without an in-depth analysis of all the remaining opponents and their team stats and how we match up with each team.

Which puts us on the bubble for the NCAA tourney. Whether that plays out like that who knows. But if is exciting to think this far into the season we have a chance. It’s been what seems like way too long.

Instant analysis: Pitt 30, Illinois 6

Outstanding performance by Pitt. This was the best I have seen them in years. Top to bottom, everyone looked good, at least for portions of their matches.

125-Camacho is turning into the guy we hoped he would be at 125.

133-Micky did exactly what Gavin said he needed to do to beat Byrd – get hand control and escape when he got to his feet.

141-Matthews still scoring with defense; needs to develop more offense

149-Badgett great rideout in 2nd won him the match

157-Casto with a slower start than Maryland/Lehigh matches but much better finish

165-Holden Heller with great start but gave up three takdowns in 3rd/SV to lose

174-Luca was right with Ruth but got caught flat-footed in OT for easy Ruth double. He’s almost there, but not quite to level of top 10 guys yet.

184-Solid win, if not flashy for Reece

197-Toughest match Nino has had; Braunagle’s defense gave him fits, but battled through it and got OT takedown

285-Slinger is quietly putting together some solid performances this season. Much improved from last year.

NFL bringing back skills challenge. Marino old school version

so this for you kids out there. the NFL had this QB competition back in the 80's. they had all of these different events that you could earn you points. then you added all of your points together and the winner was crowned.

so marino would generally do middle of the pack or less on all of them. then the final event: you had to hit a moving target. they'd get points for 10 yards, 20, etc etc. obviously the further you hit, the more points. so Marino would be way down and then he'd just bomb away, hitting the deep targets and walk away the champ.

and here, my friends, is one such occasion:

Wide Receivers question

What is the actual story with Copeland, Alston, and Nwabako? These guys did basically nothing so far and many times they were behind walk ons or running backs running routes.

Usually wide receiver is a position where young guys can make an early impact. Are these guys just not cutting it or are injuries or something else a factor?

HCPN owes Patti an apology

Great win today! Arguably salvages the season and the program progress.

Can’t say enough about Nick Patti. I saw him throw some great tight passes and show tremendous grit. It’s a shame he didn’t have more opportunity this season. In this era of college football, he could have transferred, but stuck with his teammates. He’s a CLASS ACT!

In typical pitt fashion, they nearly gave me a stroke at the end of the 4th quarter. Dropped touchdown pass wide open at the 1 to put the game away. 4th and 1 instead of putting the game away with a FG, they go for it….but out of the shotgun! And then fumble the handoff! What were they thinking! Ben Sauls with the helpf of Nick Patti. is a hero for bailing Cignetti and Narduzzi out. Means and Mumfield finally had a great game.

With all of the opt outs, playing a ton of backups, they persevered. UCLA joins the rest of the mediocre teams in the big 10 who will get thumped by Ohio st and Michigan annually. I’ll take my acc football. Hail to Pitt!

OT: Tulsa Hires Former IU HC, Marion Interviewed

Off topic, but always interesting, former Pitt WR coach Brennan Marion was in the news down south as he interviewed for the vacant Tulsa Head Coach job.

The Golden Hurricane ultimately chose former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson, who has been Offensive Coordinator at Ohio St. since being fired by Indiana in 2016.

No word yet whether Marion stays on at Texas after signing day for a rare multi-season stay at 1 school.

Texas has another top-rated recruiting class coming in (#5) as the 8-win Longhorns prep for the Alamo Bowl.
