OT: NBA…

Ok, where’s Ski been with his thread and posts on the latest and greatest going on in this NBA season.

Haven’t seen that in a while so starting this thread along with a shoutout to my CAVS taking down the Bucks yesterday. They’re right up there with the Bucks and Celts in the East.

What’s everyone think about the showdown coming up on Christmas Day? Not any of the NBA games but the NFL going up against what is usually a big day of NBA broadcasts. I’ll go out on a limb and say the NFL wins.

Ol williams and carreta are going to be solid iol and tai ray is a high ceiling low floor guy.
Dl solid class at dl not the best under narduzzi but outside of 2021 and 22 its probably 3rd
Rb 2 good versatile home run hitting backs
Qb a high ceiling qb. Could be the next josh allen but could also never be heard of again
Lb bass is the best lb prospect landed under narduzzi, biles is a big safety with great instincts and lovelace is a good developmental athlete

ACC Power Rankings

From ACC allsportsdiscussion. Seems fair

15. Louisville (2-10, 0-2) NET Ranking 346

Last Week: 15

Well, Louisville won’t go winless. I guess there’s that. Now we will see if they can win an ACC basketball game at some point.

14. Georgia Tech (6-5, 0-2) NET Ranking 145

Last Week: 12

Georgia Tech lost 15 ACC games last year. That sounds about right for this year. The school really should be thinking about moving on from Josh Pastner.

13. Florida State (4-10, 2-1) NET Ranking 252

Last Week: 14

Hey, Florida State has won three of their last four!

12. Boston College (7-6, 1-1) NET Ranking 229

Last Week: 13

Boston College should play Virginia Tech every game, because they own them.

11. Notre Dame (7-5, 0-2) NET Ranking 185

Last Week: 11

Notre Dame is an ACC afterthought this year.

10. Syracuse (8-5, 1-1) NET Ranking 153

Last week: 10

Syracuse hasn’t won more than 10 ACC games since the 2013-2014 season, and it’s probably not happening this year.

9. Pitt (9-4, 2-0) NET Ranking 70

Last week: 9

Pitt is in great shape for the post-season. We’ll see if it’s NIT or NCAA. This is a team to watch.

8. Wake Forest (9-4, 1-1) NET Ranking 87

Last Week: 8

Wake Forest got a much-needed win over Duke. That gets the Deacs back into the NCAA picture.

7. Clemson (10-3, 2-0) NET Ranking 78

Last Week: 7

At times Clemson looks like an NCAA team. There are pieces, but they need consistency.

NCAA TOURNAMENT CUT LINE

————————————————————————————————

6. NC State (10-3, 0-2) NET Ranking 42

Last Week: 5

NC State has good computer numbers, but they need to get back to .500 in the ACC. They barely slip into the NCAAs if I were making the field this week.

5. Virginia Tech (11-2, 1-1) NET Ranking 29

Last Week: 4

There are all kinds of questions about Virginia Tech after their listless effort at Boston College.

4. Duke (10-3, 1-1) NET Ranking 18

Last Week: 2

Duke still lacks consistent perimeter shooting, but they are otherwise pretty solid.

3. North Carolina (9-4, 1-1) NET Ranking 26

Last Week: 5

Yea that’s North Carolina starting to get things together after wins over Ohio State and Michigan. They are slowly trending towards being the team most thought they could be.

2. Virginia (8-2, 1-1) NET Ranking 17

Last Week: 1

Virginia’s resume speaks for itself, but their offense has regressed in the last couple of weeks.

1. Miami (12-1, 3-0) NET Ranking 48

Last Week: 3

Why shouldn’t put Miami be number 1 in the ACC right now? They are 5-1 against the Q1/Q2 and just beat Virginia.

Ranking the class

The live chat discussion of the overall ranking being disappointing made me think about the class individually. I wish it was better, but the top of the class, especially on defense, has some really good players. My rank of the guys we've got is:

1A. Jordan Bass-his film is kind of unreal.
1B. Isaiah Neal-perfect fit for Pitt D
1C. Shadarian Harrison-see above, great length, seems like he could play early.
4. Jesse Anderson-great versatility. Could probably play CB in addition to S.
5. Rasheem Biles-hes got 4 star talent but he got hurt. Plays like a missile.
6. Antonio Camon-just another strong, solid DE who should be really productive. A slightly bigger John Morgan.
7. Kenny Johnson-questions about his speed but he looks very good to me, I don't see that concern.
8. Lamar Seymore-great hands, reminds me of somebody like Tamarack Vanover from FSU in the 90s.
9. TJ Harvison-really surprised he was still available. Great all around back.
10. Ryan Carretta- strong, moves well, probably a guard, nice offers.

I'm not gonna rank the rest bc it doesn't really matter. I like Maverick Gracio, he's tall and fast off the edge. Israel Polk has a good pedigree and had a good season on a great team. I like
Cruce Brookins as a safety. The bottom of the class is what makes the rankings low, though. Not loving the OL class. The top, though, is quite good.

Syracuse Game in The Dome & Other Dribbles ...

** Allow me that chance to purge myself of a conversation about Pitt Basketball I had with a friend this summer. When asked about the prospects of the team, I proclaimed there were reasons to be encouraged because of the addition of Dior Johnson.

** My logic at the time was that Dior could be the team’s best player, which would have a critical cascading impact on our overall talent. With Dior at the top, Big John becomes your number two player and from there, all of the rest fit better into supporting roles for which they are better accustomed.

** I suspect my friend will never put any stock into my pre-season prognostications ever again. And after this confession, coupled with my proclamation that “We’re Back!” two years ago, and my declaration in the game thread at the 9 minute mark of the second half shouting “this one is OVER,” I doubt any of my fellow posters will either.

** But please indulge me for a little while as we focus on the game’s first 32 minutes and the five players who I believed would be supporting players behind two guys who didn’t even see the court tonight.

** Nelly, Jamarius, Blake, Greg and Fede have all proven well enough that they are formidable fivesome who can win in this league. In fact, at the moment, they are at the top of the league.

** Until those ugly final minutes, this group played some of the best offensive team basketball I’ve seen the Panthers play since … well … it’s been a while. Maybe since the last time we started an ACC season 2-0.

** While it’s always more fun to watch a ball fall through a basket, often it’s almost as pleasing to watch perfect passing for really good shots. That’s what we watched for four fifths of this game. We got 28 buckets and assisted on 20 of them. That’s an especially impressive number against the Cuse zone which can draw a team into a slog.

** The Panthers never experienced such a slog this night. Sure, they started getting too pleased with their ability to shoot threes with 20 seconds left on a shot clock when up by 18. But it wasn’t because the shots weren’t open.

** In fact, what’s interesting now is the reason we need Dior and John is to provide some better quality depth beyond of our first five. Maybe something lost behind the visual of falling threes was the reality that the staring five played all but 24 minutes of this game. And almost all of that was a function of Fede’s foul problems.

** Now certainly, Jorge filled in wonderfully, but I still think it’s asking a lot of him to play and produce in ACC games with where he is as a young player. And perhaps Nike could have played more than the half dozen minutes he got, but unfortunately the staff doesn’t feel confidence in him at the moment.

** But I can’t help but to think that some of those treacherous final minutes could have been soothed by a little extra help along the way, or the chance to sit for a moment and think about the game a bit.

** Nonetheless, for most of the game tonight, our players looked like they were having a great deal of fun, and accordingly they played basketball that was a great deal of fun to watch. I’ll try to focus on that fact instead of wondering how sustainable a team of five can be over the course an ACC season. After all, it almost wasn’t sustainable for 40 minutes of an ACC game.

** Yet for now, we are indeed 2-0 in this League. The last time we started 2-0 in the ACC was the last time we made the NCAA Tournament. And not only have we started 2-0, we started 2-0 with two wins on the road against at least seemingly decent teams. Or at least not teams suspected to be among the worst in the League.

** Looking at the rest of schedule, it’s almost easy to see 8 more wins, maybe 10, maybe more. Although PLEASE don't consider these to be "predictions!" After all, my track record is poor.

** But maybe we can see the kind of season some people were encouraged to talk about with their friends in the summer … only for different reasons, or more correctly … different players.

Karma for ND

I like to think of it as karma for flipping Minchey away from us...

Oregon lands RB flip

Four-star RB Jayden Limar (Lake Stevens, Washington) flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Oregon. He had previously committed to Notre Dame in May.

Another big flip for Oregon

Five-star safety Peyton Bowen announced he is flipping his commitment from Notre Dame to Oregon. The No. 15 overall recruit in the ESPN 300 is a huge get for the Ducks.

Some quick Cuse thoughts

This is the most fun I've had as a Pitt bball fan since Dixon's last year. This team has some issues but they are an easy group to root for. Some thoughts:
  • It appears that I was way off in predicting 13 wins. We should be able to hit at least .500 for the season.
  • I can't wait until we don't have to look at Boehiems disapproving look on the sidelines anymore.
  • Obviously I'd rather have Mintz than not but his game is the awful part of the current NBA. The constant foul hunting is the worst type of basketball to watch. But it screwed him in the end when he played for the foul, not the shot.
  • I wish Hinson would have stopped shooting threes but he was unreal last night. The steal, the big time rebounds. What a winning player.
  • I thought Diaz Graham showed some flashes. I don't know how long you can plan to keep kids these days but I think he's going to be good, great instincts.
  • Speaking of instincts, what the hell was that time out by Capel? You save it to let Cuse set up a play?
  • Time to see what we are made of against UNC!

Next Friday the 30th

Ok, I'm a little late to the show but I just noticed next Friday is going to be a great Pitt day. We get to watch the men's basketball team play North Caroline at noon. I'm pleasantly surprised by this team. It's been years since they have looked this competitive. Then, we have the honor of watching what's left of our football team take on UCLA @ 2! The bowl game actually will be of great interest. We are going to see a bunch of players who have all week to prepare for this game and who would not have been starters had it not been for others opting out.

I'm scheduled to work but I think I'm going to take that day off.
