I know the 1976 team won the national championship but were there other Pitt teams that were just as good or better than that team.?

I could be wrong but the 9-0 1917 team, Pop warner's third season, for its day was well respected and the glory years of the 1930's, maybe 1937's NC team 9-0-1, only Blemish was a tie at powerhouse Fordham who finished 8-0-1, 3rd in AP poll.

People will not want to hear this but if you lined up the 1980 team and the 2009 team. The 2009 team wins. I'm not saying the 1980 team was not dominant in its time, but they would would be too small and slow against the 2009 team.
The 2009 team wasn't that fast...

The 1980 OL is night and day better then the 2009 team. The 1980 team produced 5 starting NFL lineman, 3 became pro bowlers, 2 were on the all decade team, 1 became a HOFer. The 2009 OL was an above average college line where only Pinkston got a little burn in the league.

If Covert and May can block Reggie White and Lawerence Taylor for a living, I'm not sure they're worried about Sheard and Romeus.

I'd love to see Nix and Pinkston on Hugh and Rickey.

Bill Stull would eat Marino's lunch.

What I am trying to say is that team's 30 years later are typically bigger and stronger. More importantly, they have better offensive and defensive schemes. This is why I believe the 2009 team would win.

LOL...the 2009 team would get crushed!! The 1980 team was LOADED!!! They got hosed for the NC game because of the ND bias.

I'd actually venture to say that at least up front the 1980 team probably was stronger considering it's fairly known that many of those guys were using supplements that were legal then but illegal now. And, they had the same strength coach.

In terms of formations - it's a wash. We were an I formation team in 2009.

Defensively, the 2009 team did more things scheme wise. But, why would you do much of anything scheme wise when you're 1980 defense is littered with future pro bowlers?

In terms of athletes, let both teams have access to the same technologies with regards to training, rest, nutrition, etc and see what happens. I'm taking the 1980 team in a blowout.

In 1936, 1937, and 1938, we had quite a run under Sutherland with an AP No. 3 finish, a No. 1 finish, and a No. 8 finish. Our records in general were pretty good during that entire 1930s decade.

1980 team would crush the 2009 team. I don’t care what anyone says about the 09 team but Marino and company would run and pass the ball all over the 09 team. Plus the D was unreal with Green, Jackson and the D line. Remember Green played a stand up DE. The O line was so good Marino never got his uniform dirty.

Have to agree with the consensus, it’s 1980. In the 21st century, it’s obviously 2021 (not 2009)… now that would be an interesting game, although I’d go with 1980.

and the 27' Yankees would lose 4-0 in a seven game series to the 2024 Pirates who are bigger stronger and faster...so what? Not how greatest ever debates go...

But the 2009 team has almost 30 years on them. Just kidding. I mean it is a no contest.
